There is no dependable one-size-fits-all price for replacing an electric-vehicle battery. The bill depends on the vehicle and battery pack, the diagnosed failure, whether a module can be repaired instead of replacing the whole pack, labor, local service rates, and warranty or recall coverage. The only dollar figures commonly cited in the available evidence are historical examples that excluded installation, not current prices.
For a covered failure, the manufacturer generally manages and pays for the warranty repair or replacement. When the battery is out of warranty, the owner generally pays. The removed pack is not automatically the owner’s property to sell, and there is no universal rule that the owner receives a credit. Your written estimate should state who retains the pack, whether a core charge or credit applies, and who handles safe return, transport, repair, reuse, or recycling.

Why an EV battery replacement has no single price
An EV traction battery is a large, vehicle-specific system rather than a commodity part with one retail price. A warning light or reduced range can result from an individual module, a contactor, a sensor, cooling equipment, software, or a damaged cell group. A technician must identify the fault before anyone can determine whether a module-level repair is safe and viable or whether the complete pack must be replaced.
The estimate can change with all of the following:
- Vehicle model year, battery chemistry, pack capacity, and physical design.
- Whether the fault is a single module, several modules, the battery-management system, cooling hardware, or structural damage.
- New, remanufactured, or used replacement equipment, if more than one option is available for that model.
- Diagnostic time, high-voltage labor, coolant or other associated service, programming, taxes, shipping, and local labor rates.
- Warranty eligibility, a capacity threshold in the warranty contract, or an open safety recall.
For that reason, an online number copied from another vehicle is not a quote for yours. Ask for a current, vehicle-identification-number-specific estimate from a qualified service provider.

Historical price examples—and what they do not prove
A 2019 Missouri Public Service Commission filing reproduced older media examples. The underlying reports dated from 2017 and 2018, and installation was explicitly extra. They are useful for showing how model and pack size affect a price, but they are not a current market range or a manufacturer price list.
| Vehicle example | Pack size | Historical figure | Provenance and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Leaf | 24 kWh | $5,500 plus installation | Example reproduced in the Missouri Public Service Commission’s 2019 filing; underlying reporting dated to 2017. |
| Chevrolet Bolt | 60 kWh | Nearly $16,000 plus installation | Example reproduced in the 2019 filing; underlying reporting dated to 2017. |
| Tesla Model S | 65 kWh | $20,000 plus installation | Example reproduced in the 2019 filing; underlying reporting dated to 2018. |
Do not update these figures mentally for inflation or use them as a promise about a current replacement. The filing itself does not establish today’s parts availability, labor charge, battery design, or price for any particular vehicle.
Who pays when the battery fails?
When the failure is covered by the warranty
In the practical division described by the Washington State Department of Ecology, the vehicle manufacturer is responsible for a battery covered by its warranty and generally directs the repair or replacement through its dealer or service network. U.S. federal rules are commonly summarized as requiring battery warranty protection of at least eight years or 100,000 miles, but the protection that applies to your car is the warranty contract for that vehicle and jurisdiction.

Read the warranty booklet rather than assuming that every loss of range is covered. Many contracts distinguish a defect or failure from normal capacity loss and specify a minimum capacity percentage before a capacity claim is valid. Time, mileage, service history, commercial use, modifications, and regional terms can also affect eligibility. Ask the service department to identify the exact warranty clause in writing.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s April 22, 2024 summary of a Recurrent study found that, for plug-in vehicles from model years 2016 through 2023, battery replacements caused by failure were well under 1%, and most of those replacements would have been covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. The study excluded replacements performed under recalls, so the statistic does not decide coverage for an individual vehicle. For the broader model-year 2011–2023 group, the reported failure-related replacement rate was 1.5% in that study of about 15,000 plug-in vehicles.
“For PEVs from model years 2016 to 2023 battery replacement rates due to failure were well under 1% and most of those would have been covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.” — U.S. Department of Energy, Vehicle Technologies Office, Fact of the Week, April 22, 2024.
When the warranty has expired or the claim is denied
For an out-of-warranty battery, the owner generally pays for the selected repair or replacement. A shop may offer a module repair, a remanufactured pack, or another lower-cost approach, but availability, safety, compatibility, and warranty terms are model-specific. A lower initial price is not necessarily the better value if the replacement has a shorter warranty, less usable capacity, or uncertain provenance.

When a safety recall is involved
A recall is a separate path from ordinary wear and an expired warranty. Give the manufacturer or dealer the vehicle identification number and ask them to check for open battery or high-voltage campaigns. Do not assume that a recall exists because another owner reported a similar symptom, and do not assume that a warranty denial ends the matter if an open safety campaign applies. The remedy and payment rules for a recall come from the manufacturer and the applicable regulator.
Who gets the removed battery, and does the owner get paid?
There is no evidence of a universal owner buyback, scrap payment, or credit for an old traction battery. In a warranty repair, the removed pack generally moves through the dealership or original-equipment manufacturer’s service network. The manufacturer or its contractor may inspect, repair, remanufacture, reuse, repurpose, or recycle it. The owner usually does not choose a buyer or receive a cash payment simply because the pack was removed.
For an out-of-warranty job, the pack may remain with a dealership, an independent EV specialist, a dismantler, or another qualified channel. The contract can make the shop the owner of the removed part, require its return, or attach a core charge or credit. None of those arrangements is universal. A pack that no longer meets your range needs can still have useful modules or recoverable materials, so “old” does not automatically mean worthless; conversely, useful residual value does not guarantee that a provider will share it.

- Core terms: Is there a core charge, deposit, or credit? What condition, deadline, or return documentation controls it?
- Logistics: Who supplies compliant packaging, arranges high-voltage transport, and pays the handling or return cost?
- Disposition: Will the pack be evaluated for repair, remanufacturing, reuse, stationary storage, or recycling, and who is responsible for that handoff?
- Documentation: Can the provider give a receipt showing the battery’s serial or identifying information and its final disposition?
How a removed EV battery is handled
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes a sequence of collection, identification, sorting, possible disassembly, and evaluation. A dealer, mechanic, auto disassembler, or other qualified handler may first determine whether the pack or its modules can be repaired or reused. A pack may return to vehicle service where its remaining capacity is adequate, or modules may be repurposed for a different use such as stationary energy storage.

If recycling is appropriate, large packs are commonly broken down into modules or cells so they can be transported and processed. At a destination facility, material may be shredded and separated to recover metals and other materials. The exact route depends on the pack’s condition, chemistry, local infrastructure, and the capabilities of the receiving facility.
“Some battery packs or modules may also be evaluated for repair or reuse—either being put back into a device similar to their original one or being repurposed in a different type of product or application.” — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling guidance.
How to obtain a defensible replacement estimate
Use this sequence before approving high-voltage work:
- Provide complete vehicle details. Give the year, make, model, trim, battery size if known, mileage, location, and vehicle identification number. Tell the provider whether the car is still under its time or mileage warranty.
- Describe the symptom and history. Include warning messages, charging behavior, sudden versus gradual range loss, collision or flood exposure, and any previous battery or cooling-system work. Do not erase diagnostic data before the inspection.
- Request a written diagnostic result. It should identify the failed component or the evidence that the full pack is unsafe or uneconomical to repair. Ask whether the diagnosis itself is refundable or credited if you authorize the work.
- Require an itemized estimate. Separate the battery or modules, labor hours, diagnostic fee, coolant and associated service, software or calibration, shipping, taxes, and any core charge or deposit.
- Compare replacement descriptions. The estimate should say whether the part is new, remanufactured, or used; identify its expected capacity and compatibility; and state the parts and labor warranty.
- Clarify the old-pack contract. Put retention, credit, return deadline, packaging, transport, and final disposition in the estimate or repair order, not in a verbal promise.
- Confirm turnaround and contingency charges. Ask what happens if additional damaged modules, coolant contamination, corrosion, or programming problems are discovered after the pack is opened.
- Check recall and warranty status independently. Have the dealer or manufacturer verify open campaigns with the VIN, and ask for a written coverage decision before paying for an out-of-pocket replacement.
Comparing repair and replacement options
Not every option exists for every model. Compare alternatives on the same assumptions rather than comparing one shop’s parts-only number with another shop’s complete installed price.

| Option | What changes | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Module-level repair | Only failed modules or related components are replaced, if the design and diagnosis permit it. | What test proves the remaining modules are suitable, and what warranty covers the repaired pack? |
| Full-pack replacement | The complete high-voltage assembly is exchanged. | Why is a full replacement necessary, and are programming, coolant service, and labor included? |
| New pack | Uses a newly manufactured assembly subject to the supplier’s terms. | What is the capacity or defect warranty, and is the part currently available? |
| Remanufactured pack | Previously used components are inspected and rebuilt to a provider’s specification. | What was replaced, what capacity is guaranteed, and who honors the warranty? |
| Used pack | An assembly removed from another vehicle is installed if compatible. | What is its history, state of health, mileage, capacity, and return policy? |
Also compare expected range, compatibility with the vehicle’s software and charging system, repair turnaround, and what happens if the replacement fails during the stated warranty. The cheapest parts line is not an apples-to-apples price if it omits installation or a core deposit.
Handling, transport, and U.S. regulatory considerations
This guidance is U.S.-specific. The EPA says an EV battery removed at a dealership, repair shop, scrap yard, or similar facility is not household hazardous waste. That classification does not make it suitable for household handling. A large traction pack contains high voltage and substantial stored energy; leave removal, packaging, storage, and transport to the vehicle service provider or another appropriately qualified handler.
State and local rules can be stricter than federal requirements. For commercial handlers, EPA guidance discusses universal-waste requirements and transportation rules in relevant circumstances, with obligations depending on the generator, the way the battery is managed, and its destination. Do not put a traction pack in household trash, curbside recycling, or a consumer battery drop box. The EPA’s household instructions for terminals and collection sites concern ordinary household-generated lithium batteries, not a removed vehicle pack.

Common mistakes that create surprise bills
- Using a years-old internet price: Check the date, model, pack size, and whether installation was excluded.
- Assuming range loss equals pack failure: Require a diagnostic explanation and ask whether a module, sensor, cooling, or software issue is involved.
- Confusing warranty and recall coverage: Have both checked by VIN; they are different programs.
- Accepting a verbal promise about the old battery: Put the core charge, credit, retention, and transport terms on the repair order.
- Comparing incomplete estimates: Make each provider show parts, labor, coolant, taxes, shipping, programming, and any deposit separately.
- Transporting the pack yourself: Ask the provider to arrange compliant handling rather than treating the traction battery like a household battery.
What you should expect to pay
The evidence does not establish a current dollar estimate for any specific vehicle. A responsible answer for your car requires its model year, location, battery and fault diagnosis, warranty or recall status, and a current installed quote. Historical figures of $5,500, nearly $16,000, and $20,000 describe particular packs in 2017–2018 reporting and exclude installation; they should not be presented as today’s prices.
