There is no single published price for replacing every Toyota plug-in hybrid’s high-voltage traction battery. RepairPal’s estimates, updated in 2026, range from $10,370–$10,553 for a 2020 Prius Prime to $31,186–$31,409 for a 2022 RAV4 Prime. Both exclude taxes and fees, and neither is a Toyota quote. Before budgeting for a customer-paid replacement, check whether the vehicle is still covered by warranty.
What the available estimates say
The figures below are model- and year-specific third-party estimates, not prices guaranteed by Toyota or local repair shops.
| Vehicle in estimate | RepairPal estimate | Page updated | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 Toyota Prius Prime | $10,370–$10,553 | August 7, 2026 | Taxes and fees excluded; actual cost can vary by location. |
| 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime | $31,186–$31,409 | September 3, 2026 | Taxes and fees excluded; the estimate may include related repair needs depending on the case. |
RepairPal’s cited pages do not establish a nationwide average, Toyota’s own replacement price, or a price for every model year. The estimates also concern different vehicles and may reflect different estimator assumptions, so the difference between them is not a direct comparison of equivalent repairs. Treat them as examples of how widely estimates can vary, not as a quote for your car. (RepairPal: 2020 Prius Prime; RepairPal: 2022 RAV4 Prime)
Check warranty coverage before paying for a replacement
Toyota states that, for hybrid vehicles beginning with model year 2020, the hybrid high-voltage (HV) battery is covered for 10 years from its original date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage remains subject to the terms and conditions of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty and the applicable Warranty and Maintenance Guide. Toyota’s page is the starting point; the guide and Toyota’s confirmation for the particular vehicle determine whether a repair qualifies. (Toyota owner warranty information)

- Easy Installation
Toyota’s newsroom information for the 2024 Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime also describes 10-year/150,000-mile HV battery coverage and says it is transferable across ownership. That does not make every vehicle eligible for the same coverage in every circumstance. Check the vehicle’s model year, in-service date, mileage, warranty booklet, and jurisdiction-specific emissions coverage with Toyota before authorizing customer-paid work. (Toyota newsroom)
Make sure the quote is for the right battery and repair
In this context, “PHEV battery” means the high-voltage traction battery that supports plug-in electric driving—not the 12-volt accessory battery. Toyota describes the Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime as plug-in hybrids combining gasoline-engine and electric-motor power. A fault or warning does not, by itself, establish that the entire traction battery pack needs replacement; ask the shop to identify the diagnosis and proposed work. How to compare written estimates
Ask a Toyota dealer and, if appropriate, an independent hybrid specialist for written estimates tied to your VIN and model year. Compare the scope and terms, not just the headline total.
- Diagnosis: Does the technician’s finding confirm that the high-voltage traction battery itself needs replacement? Ask whether the quote includes diagnostic work and any related repairs.
- Replacement pack: What exact part number is proposed, and is the pack new OEM, remanufactured, used, or another type?
- Itemized charges: Request separate amounts for parts, labor, diagnostics, taxes, fees, disposal, and related repairs. RepairPal’s cited estimates exclude taxes and fees, so the final bill may be higher.
- Coverage: Has Toyota checked warranty or applicable emissions coverage before customer-pay work begins?
- Repair warranty: What coverage applies to the replacement battery and installation labor, and for how long?
These are questions for evaluating a specific quote, not a claim that one replacement type or repair route is always preferable. The cited estimates do not establish whether pack repair or module-level service is possible or suitable for a particular fault.

Why an online estimate is not your final bill
A VIN-specific written quote is needed to establish what your vehicle actually requires and what a local shop will charge. The available estimates are not a Toyota-published price list, do not cover every model year, and exclude taxes and fees. A separate commercial guide has reported a $10,000–$15,000 RAV4 Prime dealer-replacement range, but its methodology is not independently verified and it conflicts with RepairPal’s estimate for a 2022 RAV4 Prime; it is not a dependable substitute for a quote.
