There is no reliable published figure for the average annual cost of maintaining a Citroën 2CV. A UK classic-car guide gives £40–£60 as an indicative price for a routine oil service, but that is only one maintenance item—not a yearly ownership total. The same guide puts a gearbox rebuild at about £600, and the condition of the car, especially its structure, can change the budget substantially.
What should you budget for a 2CV?
Use the available prices as planning anchors, not as a prediction of what a particular car will cost you. The £40–£60 oil-service figure and the repair examples below come from a UK specialist classic-car guide. Its publication date is not confirmed, and the figures are not presented as current quotes or a national average. Labour may be additional where the guide gives a component price.

No representative annual 2CV maintenance-spend statistic is established by the available sources. It would be misleading to add the oil-service price to a gearbox rebuild, clutch, brakes and suspension parts and call the sum a typical yearly bill: those are different jobs, and a given car will not necessarily need them all in the same year. One car may need routine upkeep; another may need overdue repairs or restoration work.
For a useful estimate, separate expected routine work from repairs revealed by inspection. If you are considering a purchase, base your budget on the actual car and a written estimate from a specialist, rather than a single generic annual number.

These are guide prices from Classics World’s Citroën 2CV buyer’s guide. They indicate the scale of particular jobs in the guide’s UK context, not what every owner will pay. A local specialist can tell you whether the work is needed, what parts are appropriate and what labour will add. Outside the UK, seek local estimates: these examples do not establish prices in other markets.
Routine maintenance: the historic oil intervals
Citroën’s July 1975 owner’s manual for the 2CV4 and 2CV6 specifies draining and refilling the engine sump every 3,000 miles (5,000 km), and changing the gearbox oil every 12,000 miles (20,000 km). These are the instructions in that manual for the models it covers. Check the correct documentation for the exact car and variant rather than assuming the same schedule applies unchanged to every 2CV.
The manual also advises checking the engine-oil level before a long journey and checking tyre inflation pressures regularly. It lists 20W-40 or 20W-50 engine oil for the covered 2CV4/2CV6 engines, with different guidance for very cold countries. Treat that as period guidance, not blanket approval of any present-day oil: confirm suitability for the specific engine and the conditions in which the car is used.

The short historic engine-oil interval matters to budgeting because the cost and frequency of routine upkeep depend on use. The manual does not give a modern annual service bill, and the £40–£60 service example does not establish the total cost of carrying out every item in the manual. Do not multiply that price into an annual figure without knowing what the service includes, the car’s mileage and its other maintenance needs.
Citroën’s manual notes: “The manner in which a car is driven affects its running costs, particularly as far as fuel, oil, and tyre expenses are concerned.” That is a statement in the 1975 manual about driving technique and running costs, not a quantified modern study of 2CV expenditure.
Why condition can outweigh the routine-service price
A 2CV’s relatively straightforward mechanical layout does not make every example inexpensive to own. The specialist guide stresses the importance of finding a fundamentally sound, rust-free car and warns about corrosion in chassis and body areas. Structural or body deterioration can turn an apparently modest purchase into a restoration project. The material available does not provide a dependable price for such work, so a general estimate would be especially unreliable.

Mechanical condition is another variable. The roughly £600 gearbox-rebuild example shows that a single substantial repair can be several times the cited oil-service price. It is not evidence that every 2CV will need a rebuild. Likewise, the clutch, damper, brake and suspension figures are examples of parts, not a prediction that all those items are due on any one vehicle.
- Structure and body: ask for corrosion to be assessed, including the chassis and body areas identified as concerns by the specialist guide.
- Mechanical wear: have the mechanical condition checked, with attention to any suspected gearbox or other repair needs.
- Maintenance history: review service and repair records for evidence of past work and potentially deferred maintenance.
- Scope of work: distinguish routine servicing, safety-critical repairs, mechanical rebuilding and optional restoration instead of treating them as one budget category.
The guide’s emphasis on sound condition is particularly relevant before purchase: prevention is not guaranteed, but knowing about defects before committing gives you a basis to decide whether to proceed and to price the required work. It does not support predicting a specific owner’s total from the model name alone.
How to get a car-specific estimate
- Collect the car’s details and records. Identify the particular vehicle and variant, and gather any available service and repair history. The correct manual and maintenance history help a specialist assess what applies to that car.
- Arrange an inspection before relying on a budget. Ask a specialist to assess structural and body condition as well as mechanical condition. A brief look at parts prices cannot substitute for findings on the actual vehicle.
- Request an itemised estimate. Ask the workshop to distinguish parts from labour and to identify work that is immediately safety-critical, routine, or optional restoration. This makes quotes easier to compare on the same scope.
- Separate recurring upkeep from condition-led repairs. Use the manual’s intervals as historic guidance for the covered 2CV4/2CV6 models, then confirm the schedule for your car. Keep repair estimates separate; do not assume every listed repair will recur annually.
- Use local prices for your location. The cited amounts are UK guide examples. Ask a workshop serving your area for a vehicle-specific figure and confirm whether parts, fitting and any additional work are included.
For UK owners, the 2CVGB handbook lists workshops offering servicing, repairs, rebuilds and restoration. Its “Garages & Specialists” page reports an update on 25 February 2026. The directory establishes that specialist workshop services are listed; it does not guarantee a particular workshop’s availability, price or suitability for an individual car.

How to compare quotes without being misled
A quoted number is meaningful only when you know what work it covers. A price for a component is not the same as a fitted repair, and a routine oil service is not a full inspection or a forecast of annual spending. When comparing estimates, make sure the workshops are addressing the same vehicle, condition and scope.

Planning your ownership budget
For an initial plan, record routine maintenance separately from a repair reserve. The routine side should be based on the correct documentation, expected use and the servicing a specialist says the vehicle needs. The repair side should reflect inspection findings and any known defects—not a sum of every part price in a buyer’s guide. If the car is being considered for purchase, make the estimate contingent on a specialist’s assessment before treating it as a sound example.

This approach avoids two opposite mistakes: assuming the 2CV is expensive simply because a major rebuild is possible, and assuming it will be cheap because the layout is straightforward. A rebuild is not an automatic annual expense, but neither does the modest service example represent the cost of rectifying corrosion or deferred repairs.
The available evidence supports a limited but useful conclusion: routine service has a modest UK guide-price anchor, while repair costs depend on the specific job and the state of the car. It does not establish one annual figure that can responsibly be applied to every Citroën 2CV.
