How Much Does It Cost to Own a Tesla Compared With a Bentley?

Kelley Blue Book’s five-year estimate for a 2026 Tesla Model 3 is $51,952, but the available Bentley source provides no comparable ownership-cost figure. A fair comparison requires matching models, mileage, location and ownership term.

There is no reliable single figure for owning “a Tesla” versus “a Bentley” without choosing specific models, trims, condition, location, mileage and ownership period. One current U.S. benchmark is Kelley Blue Book’s estimate of $51,952 over five years for a 2026 Tesla Model 3, including depreciation. The reviewed Bentley owner-services source provides no comparable cost estimate, so the evidence does not establish a dollar difference between the two brands.

What a fair comparison has to include

A vehicle’s purchase price is only one part of its cost to own. To compare a Tesla and a Bentley fairly, choose the same ownership term and annual mileage, then account for the money spent during that period and the value recovered when the vehicle is sold.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A useful total-cost framework includes:

  • Depreciation: purchase price minus resale value at the end of the ownership period.
  • Energy: electricity for an EV or fuel for a gasoline vehicle.
  • Maintenance and repairs: scheduled service, wear items and work not covered by warranty.
  • Insurance: the owner’s premium for the specific vehicle, location, driver and coverage.
  • Financing: interest and other financing costs, not simply the monthly payment.
  • Taxes and fees: applicable sales or vehicle taxes, registration and other charges.

Atlas Public Policy’s 2025 vehicle total-cost methodology includes these kinds of costs. Its report compares selected popular U.S. vehicles over seven years, but it does not include a Bentley in the comparison. It is therefore useful as a framework, not as evidence of what a Tesla costs relative to a Bentley.

Model, trim, new or used condition, geography, annual distance and holding period can all change the result. For the Tesla, access to home charging also affects the electricity assumptions. A comparison that changes several of these inputs at once cannot show which vehicle is responsible for a cost difference.

The available five-year Tesla benchmark

Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 Tesla Model 3 page, accessed October 9, 2026, lists an MSRP of $38,630 and an estimated five-year cost to own of $51,952. The estimate is KBB’s model calculation, not a personalized quote, an observed owner’s bill or a comparison with a Bentley.

2026 Tesla Model 3 cost category KBB estimate over five years What the figure represents
Depreciation $21,889 Estimated loss in value
Fuel/electricity $1,871 Estimated energy expense
Maintenance $3,115 Estimated scheduled and routine maintenance
Repairs $2,178 Estimated repair expense
Insurance $13,525 Estimated insurance expense
Financing $4,767 Estimated financing expense
State fees $4,607 Estimated fees in the KBB calculation
Out-of-pocket expenses $30,063 All listed five-year expenses other than depreciation
Total cost to own $51,952 Depreciation plus out-of-pocket expenses

The figures are KBB estimates and depend on its assumptions; actual costs can differ. Dividing the total by five gives a simple average of $10,390.40 per year, or about $866 per month, but that arithmetic is not a predicted monthly bill. It combines costs that occur at different times, including depreciation, and excludes any owner-specific adjustments that differ from KBB’s assumptions.

The estimate also illustrates why a low energy-cost figure alone does not determine the ownership total. In this model estimate, insurance and depreciation are larger categories than fuel/electricity. A buyer who wants to use the benchmark should examine the assumptions in KBB’s calculator and replace them with personal quotes and a realistic resale estimate where possible.

What Tesla’s maintenance information does—and does not—show

Tesla’s 2025 maintenance article gives these annual maintenance estimates by model:

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Tesla model Tesla-published annual maintenance estimate
Model 3 $257–$499
Model Y $316–$643
Model S $338–$580
Model X $421–$748

These are manufacturer-published estimates, not independent survey results or a guarantee of an owner’s bill. They should not be treated as a Bentley comparison, and they are not interchangeable with KBB’s five-year maintenance estimate: the sources use their own estimates and assumptions.

Tesla describes its vehicles as needing minimal maintenance and notes that owners do not need oil, filter or belt replacements. It also says electricity typically costs less per mile than gasoline and that regenerative braking can extend brake life. Those are general manufacturer statements, not a calculation of savings for a particular driver. Tire wear, driving conditions, electricity rates and charging habits still affect what an owner spends.

Service intervals, warranty and used-car coverage

Tesla’s April 1, 2025 maintenance article recommends rotating tires every 6,250 miles, or as needed based on wear. That is a service recommendation, not a fixed annual bill: the interval to reach that mileage depends on how much and how the car is driven, while tire condition can call for attention sooner.

Tesla’s warranty information describes basic coverage of four years or 50,000 miles and battery and drive-unit coverage of eight years or 100,000–150,000 miles, whichever comes first, depending on model. The coverage that applies depends on the actual vehicle and purchase date, so buyers should check the warranty supplied for that particular car rather than assume one term applies to every Tesla.

For a Certified Pre-Owned Tesla bought directly from Tesla, the warranty support page describes remaining basic warranty coverage followed by additional coverage under its CPO terms; the remaining original battery and drive-unit warranty also applies. Tesla says non-warranty maintenance can be performed at a Tesla service center or another service center. Warranty coverage can reduce exposure to certain eligible repair costs, but it does not remove routine maintenance, insurance, energy or depreciation from a total-cost calculation.

Why the Bentley side cannot be priced from the available figures

Bentley’s U.S. services page describes owner service support and roadside-assistance packages available to customers during warranty coverage. It does not give prices for routine maintenance, repairs, insurance, fuel, depreciation or total ownership. Consequently, there is no supported Bentley number to place beside the Model 3 estimate, and assigning one would create a comparison rather than report a measured one.

The absence of a figure is not evidence that a Bentley costs a particular amount, nor does it establish the size of any difference from a Tesla. A Bentley comparison needs a named model and trim, condition and purchase price, along with estimates or quotes for its running costs and likely resale value. The Tesla side must also be recalculated for a selected model and the same assumptions. Comparing a Model 3 with an unspecified Bentley would mix vehicle class and specification with brand, making the result hard to interpret.

How to build a defensible side-by-side estimate

Use the same ownership horizon and annual mileage for both vehicles. For each candidate, record the cash price, the estimated resale value at the end of the chosen term, and the expected costs in each category. Use real quotes where possible rather than assuming that one brand’s costs stand in for another’s.

  1. Name the vehicles. Specify model, trim, model year and whether each is new or used. Record the actual transaction price rather than relying on a brand-wide average.
  2. Set the comparison conditions. Choose a holding period, annual mileage and location. Use the same assumptions for each vehicle, including the financing term and down payment if financing is part of the comparison.
  3. Estimate depreciation. Subtract the expected sale value at the end of the term from the purchase price. Keep the expected mileage and ownership duration consistent; resale value is an estimate, not a guaranteed return.
  4. Calculate energy or fuel. For an EV, use expected electricity use and the owner’s charging mix and rates. Include charging access: home or workplace charging may produce different costs from relying on other charging options. For a gasoline vehicle, use expected fuel consumption, annual mileage and local fuel prices.
  5. Gather maintenance and repair estimates. Use the manufacturer’s schedule and model-specific estimates as a starting point, then seek service estimates for the exact vehicle. Keep routine maintenance separate from repairs and identify which costs may be covered by a warranty.
  6. Get insurance and financing figures. Request insurance quotes for the exact cars and driver/location details. Compare total financing expense on equivalent terms; a monthly payment by itself does not reveal the vehicle’s full cost.
  7. Add taxes and fees, then total the categories. Apply the relevant local charges to the actual transaction. Report both the total and its components so a large resale or insurance assumption is visible rather than hidden in one headline number.

A compact calculation is: total ownership cost = purchase price − resale value + energy/fuel + maintenance + repairs + insurance + financing + taxes and fees. If the comparison uses a published estimator, keep its number separate from personal quotes and label the source, period and assumptions. Do not combine one vehicle’s five-year estimate with another vehicle’s annual maintenance figure and call the result a head-to-head total.

Home charging and other assumptions that can change the Tesla estimate

Tesla’s maintenance information refers to home or office charging and its Wall Connector. A home charger is an equipment option, not a guaranteed cost saving: whether it is suitable depends on charging access, vehicle compatibility and any electrical work required. Installation and equipment costs should be included if they apply to the buyer’s situation; the KBB Model 3 breakdown above does not separately establish a cost for a specific home-charging setup.

Likewise, the $1,871 KBB energy estimate should not be read as a universal Tesla electricity bill. A buyer should use their own expected mileage, local electricity price and charging pattern to test whether the estimator’s assumptions resemble their use. Publicly available figures in this comparison do not establish one universal annual electricity cost or a matched Bentley fuel expense.

How to interpret broader EV savings claims

Atlas Public Policy’s 2025 report found that, in its seven-year comparison, EVs had lower total costs than selected gasoline counterparts in all but one case. The reported savings ranged from over $2,000 for a compact sedan to over $8,000 for a midsize SUV. Those findings apply to the report’s selected vehicle pairs and methodology; they do not establish a Tesla-versus-Bentley result and should not be generalized to a luxury Bentley comparison.

The practical conclusion is limited but useful: the Model 3 has a published five-year estimate that can serve as a starting point, while the cited Bentley source does not provide an equivalent cost figure. To learn which of two specific cars is less expensive to own, the buyer needs matched model-specific estimates for depreciation, energy or fuel, service, insurance, financing, taxes and fees.
