There is no dependable single price for insuring a luxury SUV. Your premium is calculated from the exact vehicle (year, make, model and trim), where it is kept and driven, who drives it, the driving and claims records, the coverage limits and the deductibles. The only useful estimate for your situation is a set of like-for-like quotes using identical information.
A frequently cited national figure does not answer this question. The Insurance Information Institute reports a countrywide average auto-insurance expenditure of $1,282 for 2023, a 14.0% increase from 2022, based on National Association of Insurance Commissioners data. That is an all-vehicle expenditure measure, not a luxury-SUV premium, and it does not control for vehicle characteristics, coverage, deductibles, state laws, traffic or demographic factors. Why a luxury SUV has no standard insurance price
Insurers use two linked processes. Underwriting evaluates the risk presented by an applicant and vehicle; rating converts the expected claim cost into a price. Each insurer weights information differently, so the same luxury SUV and driver can receive materially different quotes.

- Collectible: This 1:64 scale die-cast model is the 33rd release in the 2022 Matchbox series, featuring a gray Infiniti QX80 SUV.
- Detailed Design: Expertly crafted to capture the distinctive styling and proportions of the full-size luxury SUV.
- Authentic Branding: Features the iconic Infiniti emblem and badging for a realistic look.
- Compact Size: With its compact 1:64 scale, this model is perfect for display or adding to your collection.
- Premium Quality: Made from high-quality materials for long-lasting durability and enjoyment.
- Garaging location and the territory in which the SUV is driven
- Driver age, gender, marital status and driving experience
- Driving record and previous claims
- Credit history where state law permits its use
- Previous insurance history
- Vehicle type and how it is used
- Annual mileage
- Selected coverages, limits and deductibles
Because these variables interact, an SUV that is expensive to repair may still receive a lower quote than another luxury SUV if it is driven by a safer household in a lower-risk location with different coverage choices. Conversely, a modestly equipped vehicle can be costly to insure when the drivers, territory or policy limits produce higher expected losses. NAIC consumer auto guidance explains the information insurers request and how to shop.
What the national $1,282 figure does—and does not—tell you
The 2023 countrywide average auto-insurance expenditure of $1,282 is useful as a broad historical reference, not as a benchmark for a luxury SUV. It combines every vehicle class and many different policy designs across the United States. It also reflects expenditure data rather than a quote for a particular vehicle, driver and coverage package.
| Figure | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| $1,282 in 2023 | NAIC countrywide average auto-insurance expenditure reported by Triple-I | Context for the overall market; not a luxury-SUV premium |
| 14.0% increase from 2022 to 2023 | Change in that countrywide average expenditure | Shows year-over-year movement in the aggregate measure, not your renewal price |
State regulation, traffic, repair costs, deductibles, liability limits and the mix of vehicles and drivers can all move an individual quote away from that national number. No authoritative luxury-SUV-specific national average is established by the sources available for this article, so a precise dollar promise would be misleading.

How the SUV itself changes the premium
Repair and replacement severity
Luxury vehicles commonly use expensive parts, complex sensors, advanced driver-assistance systems and specialized labor. When a covered loss occurs, the amount paid to repair or replace the vehicle can therefore be high. The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) reports that collision claim severity is high for luxury vehicles because of their high prices. Comprehensive losses are typically highest for very large luxury cars, where repair or replacement costs are also substantial. HLDI and IIHS auto-insurance research describes these loss patterns.
Claim frequency is a separate question
High severity does not mean every luxury SUV generates the most claims. HLDI notes that collision and property-damage-liability claim frequency for luxury vehicles can be lower than for many other vehicle classes. A vehicle can have relatively few claims but still produce high average payouts when a crash occurs. That is why it is inaccurate to say that every luxury SUV automatically costs more to insure than every non-luxury SUV.

Model-level loss results
HLDI publishes insurance-loss results by make and model across six coverage types, grouped by vehicle class and size. The results are adjusted for several nonvehicle variables, making them useful for comparing vehicles within a class. They are insurance-loss comparisons, not personalized premiums. HLDI also cautions that earlier results may not predict a substantially redesigned vehicle, so a major refresh or new generation deserves additional scrutiny. Review HLDI loss data by make and model before treating an older result as a forecast for a new design.
The driver, location and use variables that can dominate the quote
Where the SUV is kept
Insurers rate the address where the vehicle is garaged and the territory in which it operates. Local collision rates, theft, weather losses, repair costs and traffic patterns can all affect the expected claim cost. Two identical SUVs can therefore have different premiums in different ZIP codes or states.

Who drives it
Age, gender, experience, marital status, driving violations and prior claims are among the applicant characteristics NAIC identifies. Every household driver who regularly uses the SUV should be disclosed accurately. Omitting a household driver or understating use can create coverage problems when a claim is filed.
How far and for what purpose it is driven
Annual mileage and vehicle use are rating inputs. Commuting, business use, frequent long-distance travel and occasional personal use can present different exposures. Give each insurer the same honest mileage and use description so the comparison remains valid.
Insurance and credit history
Previous insurance and claims history can affect eligibility and price. Credit history is used in some rating systems where state law allows it; rules differ by jurisdiction. Ask how your state treats this factor rather than assuming that every insurer applies it in the same way.

What coverage choices make the quote move
A premium is inseparable from the protection purchased. Compare policies only when the liability limits, optional coverages and deductibles match.
- Liability limits: These determine how much the policy can pay for injuries or property damage for which you are legally responsible. Higher limits generally represent more protection and can change the premium.
- Collision coverage: Pays for covered damage to the SUV from a collision, subject to the selected deductible.
- Comprehensive coverage: Addresses covered noncollision losses such as theft, weather or other specified events, also subject to a deductible.
- Deductibles: The amount you pay before the insurer pays a covered collision or comprehensive claim. A higher deductible can reduce the premium while increasing your out-of-pocket risk.
- Optional protections: Insurers may offer additions with different limits, exclusions and eligibility rules. Include the same options in every quote when you want a genuine comparison.
Read exclusions as carefully as covered events. A lower price can reflect narrower protection, lower limits or a larger deductible rather than a more efficient insurer.
How to obtain a comparable luxury-SUV estimate
Use one consistent information set with every insurer. NAIC specifically recommends providing the same vehicle description and use, household drivers, coverages and limits when shopping.
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model year, make, model, trim or configuration, safety equipment and whether it is new, financed, leased or owned. A base model and a high-performance or heavily optioned trim may not rate alike.
- Describe storage and use. Provide the garaging address, annual mileage, commuting or business use and any other regular use. Do not switch between a low-mileage estimate and a higher actual mileage when requesting different quotes.
- List every driver. Supply ages, licenses, experience, violations, claims and prior insurance information for each household driver who may operate the SUV.
- Set the coverage package first. Choose the liability limits, collision and comprehensive deductibles and optional protections before asking for prices. Write them down so each insurer receives the same specification.
- Request quotes from multiple insurers. Individual rating systems differ, so one company’s price cannot establish the market price. Ask for the premium for the same policy term and payment arrangement.
- Save the quote documents. Keep the stated limits, deductibles, covered vehicles, driver list and exclusions with the premium. A telephone figure without those details is difficult to compare or verify.
How to compare quotes without buying less protection by accident
Put the offers side by side using the policy documents, not just the headline premium. The declarations page records core details such as coverage limits and covered vehicles; the policy contract contains exclusions and other conditions. Check that the quote and declarations page describe the same SUV and drivers you submitted.
| Comparison point | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total premium for the same term | Are the payment schedule and policy period identical? | A monthly installment or shorter term can make prices appear incomparable. |
| Liability limits | Do bodily-injury and property-damage limits match? | Different limits change both protection and price. |
| Collision and comprehensive deductibles | Would you owe the same amount after a covered loss? | A lower premium may simply shift more cost to you after a claim. |
| Included and optional coverages | Are the same protections and limits present? | Removing an option can make a quote look cheaper while reducing coverage. |
| Exclusions and conditions | Do any use, driver, repair or loss exclusions differ? | Contract language determines when a claim is covered. |
| Claims-service information | What documented service channels and procedures are available? | Premium is only one part of the policy’s practical value. |
Before purchasing, verify that the insurer and agent are licensed in your state through the state insurance department. NAIC also advises shopping among insurers rather than assuming one company will be cheapest for every driver or vehicle.

Why your renewal may change even when nothing obvious changed
A renewal premium can move because insurers update rating models, loss costs, repair prices, theft or weather experience, or state-approved rates. The aggregate market figure reported by Triple-I rose 14.0% from 2022 to 2023, but that does not predict the change for an individual policy. Your own renewal can differ because the vehicle, territory, drivers, claims, mileage, limits and deductibles are specific to your account.
When a renewal surprises you, request the declarations page and compare it with the prior term. Confirm that the vehicle, drivers, annual mileage, limits and deductibles are correct. Then obtain new like-for-like quotes instead of comparing only the new premium with a national average.

Using the national average as a personal target
The $1,282 figure covers all vehicles and policy situations. Treating it as a luxury-SUV quote can lead you to reject adequate coverage or misjudge a legitimate price. Use comparable quotes for your exact risk instead.
Comparing different deductibles
A policy with a $1,000 deductible is not equivalent to one with a $500 deductible. Standardize both collision and comprehensive deductibles before declaring a winner.

Assuming an old model result predicts a redesign
HLDI warns that earlier loss results may not predict a substantially redesigned vehicle. Check the specific model year and generation where data are available, and treat older comparisons as historical context.
Choosing the lowest premium without reading the contract
Confirm limits, deductibles, exclusions and covered vehicles on the declarations page and in the policy wording. A lower premium can purchase less protection or create more out-of-pocket exposure.
A practical decision framework
- Define the protection you actually need. Set liability limits and deductibles before soliciting prices.
- Freeze the information. Use one vehicle description, mileage, garaging location and driver list for every quote.
- Collect several offers. Include insurers that write policies in your state and confirm licensing.
- Normalize the offers. Remove differences in term, payment schedule, limits, deductibles and optional coverages before comparing premiums.
- Review contract details. Check exclusions and declarations-page accuracy, then consider claims-service information alongside price.
- Re-shop after material changes. A new vehicle, address, driver, mileage pattern, claim or redesigned model can change the appropriate comparison.
The bottom line for luxury-SUV shoppers
The cost to insure a luxury SUV is whatever a properly matched quote produces for that exact vehicle, household, location, use and coverage design. Luxury construction can increase claim severity because repairs and replacements are costly, while claim frequency may be lower than in other classes. Neither fact supports a universal luxury-SUV surcharge.
Start with the exact year, make, model and configuration; provide identical driver and use information to each insurer; match limits and deductibles; and read the declarations page and exclusions before comparing the premiums. That process answers the question more accurately than any national average.
