At home, estimate the cost from the SUV’s energy use and the electricity rate that applies while charging. At a public charger, use that station’s current tariff and add any session, time, idle, or subscription fees. Public charging—especially DC fast charging—normally costs more than home electricity, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
How to calculate your electric SUV charging cost
For a useful driving-cost comparison, calculate the electricity cost per 100 miles:
Cost per 100 miles = vehicle consumption in kWh per 100 miles × electricity price per kWh
For a specific charging session, use the energy added:

Session cost = kWh added × price per kWh + applicable extra fees
Extra charges can include a session fee, time-based billing, idle fees, or a subscription. If a charger bills by time rather than energy, the total also depends on how quickly the SUV can accept power. The vehicle’s published energy consumption or displayed trip efficiency is more useful for estimating ongoing driving costs than battery capacity alone. For a full-charge estimate, you also need the usable energy being added—not just the battery’s stated capacity.
Two illustrative calculations
The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) uses 27 kWh per 100 miles and an electricity price of 10.7 cents per kWh in one example. Those assumptions produce a cost of about $2.89 per 100 miles. This is an illustration, not a universal rate or a test result for electric SUVs.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a preliminary 2025 annual average U.S. residential electricity price of 17.30 cents per kWh in February 2026. Applying that national average to the same illustrative 27 kWh per 100 miles gives about $4.67 per 100 miles. Your bill and SUV’s consumption may differ.

EIA’s preliminary 2025 state averages ranged from 8.20 cents per kWh in North Dakota to 35.72 cents per kWh in Hawaii. At the illustrative 27 kWh per 100 miles, those rates work out to about $2.21 to $9.64 for the energy used per 100 miles. These calculations exclude charging losses and differences in household rate plans.
Why a full charge is a different calculation
A full-battery price is not the same as a cost per mile: SUVs have different battery sizes, and drivers replenish different amounts of energy. As a separate illustration, DOE AFDC says charging a 200-mile-range EV with a fully depleted 54 kWh battery would cost about $6 at 10.7 cents per kWh. That figure follows those stated assumptions; it is not a general full-charge price for SUVs.

What home charging costs
When you charge at home, the electricity cost appears on your household bill. Use the marginal rate that applies during the hours you charge, rather than assuming every kilowatt-hour is billed at the same price. If your utility has time-of-use periods, calculate using the rate for the period when the SUV is plugged in. Some utilities offer EV charging incentives or special rates, but availability and terms vary; check with your utility.
Many drivers charge overnight using AC Level 1 or Level 2 equipment. Level 1 uses a standard 120-volt outlet and may be sufficient for some daily driving if a suitable dedicated circuit is available. Level 2 uses 240 volts and charges faster. A Level 2 home EV charger is an option for drivers who need quicker replenishment, but not everyone needs to install one.

Apartment and multifamily residents may not have access to a dedicated outlet or may pay through a building’s charging arrangement. In that case, the cost and billing may resemble public charging more than a direct household electricity calculation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What public charging costs
Public charging prices depend on the network, station, location, and billing method. A charger may bill by kilowatt-hour, by time, per session, or through a subscription. Some locations offer free charging, but DOE says drivers can normally expect public charging—particularly DC fast charging (DCFC)—to cost more than home electricity. There is no single current public rate that applies to every station.
Before plugging in, check the network or station listing for its current price and billing rules. Payment may be handled by card, a mobile app, a subscription, or a plug-and-charge feature, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes. Include any applicable session, time, or idle fees when estimating the total.

Compare the same energy or driving distance
For a fair home-versus-public comparison, compare the cost of the same delivered energy or the same driving distance. Use your household’s actual marginal electricity rate on the home side and the specific station’s current tariff on the public side. If public charging has extra fees, include them rather than comparing only the per-kWh prices.
A DOE summary published in 2020 reported a historical average charging cost of 15 cents per kWh, with a range of 8 to 27 cents, across a mix it described as 81% home, 14% workplace/public, and 5% DC fast charging. That older blended figure is not a current public-charger price and should not be treated as a DCFC quote.
How charging speed affects the bill and the choice
Public AC Level 2 and DCFC differ in how quickly they can deliver energy. With DCFC, the SUV’s maximum DC charging acceptance rate limits the power it can use, even if the station is capable of supplying more. Charging also generally slows as the battery approaches full. The EPA advises that charging beyond about 80% can take substantially longer on DC fast charging.
For cost-focused routine charging, home or workplace Level 1 or Level 2 charging may be preferable when available. DCFC is useful when speed, access, or a trip makes it necessary. The best choice depends on your access to home equipment, connector compatibility, the SUV’s charging limits, and the station’s price and fees.
Quick Recap
How to estimate your own cost
- Find the SUV’s energy use. Use its published consumption in kWh per 100 miles or the efficiency shown by the vehicle’s trip display.
- Check the electricity rate. For home charging, use the rate that applies at the time you charge. For public charging, check the specific station or network’s current price and billing basis.
- Choose a comparison. Multiply kWh per 100 miles by the applicable per-kWh rate for a driving-cost estimate, or multiply the kWh added by the rate for a charging-session estimate.
- Add other charges. Include any public session, time, idle, or subscription fees that apply.
- Account for the actual amount replenished. A partial charge costs less than a full charge at the same rate; battery capacity alone does not tell you how much energy a particular session will add.
