To estimate the electricity cost, multiply the energy used to charge (in kilowatt-hours, or kWh) by the electricity rate that applies when you charge. As a U.S. reference point, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports a preliminary 2025 residential average of 17.30¢ per kWh. At that rate, 50 kWh of electricity costs about $8.65. Your actual bill depends on your utility tariff, charging time and energy use.

Estimate your Tesla’s home-charging cost

Use this formula:

Charging cost = charging energy (kWh) × electricity rate ($/kWh)

For example, 50 kWh × $0.173 per kWh = $8.65. This is an illustration using 50 kWh of electricity, not a claim that every charging session adds exactly 50 kWh to the battery or draws precisely that amount from the meter. Charging losses and the energy recorded for the session affect the result.

The EIA’s 17.30¢ figure is the 2025 annual average retail price for U.S. residential customers, based on preliminary Electric Power Monthly Table 5.3 data from February 2026. It is a national comparison point, not a current quote for your home: electricity prices vary by locality. See the EIA electricity data.

Calculate the cost for your own bill

Per charging session

Multiply the session’s charging energy in kWh by the rate in effect during that session. Tesla Charge Stats can show charging energy and an estimated cost by location. To make that estimate useful, configure the home rate to match your utility tariff.

Per month

Multiply total home-charging kWh for the month by the applicable rate. If your utility uses time-of-use pricing, calculate each rate period separately and add the costs. Check your bill or tariff for the relevant energy and delivery charges and the hours when each rate applies.

Tesla Wall Connector - Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger - Level 2 - up to 48A with 24' Cable
  • COMPATIBILITY: Wall Connector is compatible with all Tesla models: Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y.
  • CHARGING SPEED: Up to 44 miles of range per hour of charge, with up to 11.5 kW / 48 amp output, depending on Tesla model and breaker size.
  • CONVENIENCE: Indoor or outdoor installation with variable amperage that allows max output to be customized to an existing power supply and supports any output up to 48A. Possible max output configurations include: 48A, 40A, 32A, 24A, 16A, 12A.
  • CONNECTIVITY: Connecting the Wall Connector to a local Wi-Fi network enables over-the-air firmware updates for continual product improvements and remote access control.
  • POWER-SHARE: Power-share is ideal for locations that need to charge more than one Tesla at the same time. This functionality allows up to six Wall Connectors to be linked for efficient power management.

Per mile

A per-mile estimate requires your Tesla’s actual or reliable model-and-trim energy use per mile as well as your electricity rate. If you know only how many miles you drove, you still need an energy-consumption figure; model, trim and driving conditions can change it. Battery capacity alone does not establish the exact energy drawn from the wall.

Use Tesla Charge Stats to refine the estimate

  1. Open Charge Stats in the Tesla app or vehicle interface.
  2. Review home charging energy in kWh and the estimated cost shown for that location.
  3. Configure the home rate by selecting a listed utility plan or entering a custom rate plan. Tesla supports time-of-use and seasonal periods.
  4. Compare the configured rates with your utility tariff and update them if they do not reflect your bill, including applicable delivery charges and charging times.

Tesla recommends prioritizing off-peak charging to optimize spending and says home charging is often the cheapest option, with potential savings from an EV time-of-use plan if one is available. Whether that lowers your cost depends on your actual tariff and schedule. Tesla’s guide is Understanding Charge Stats.

Home charger options and their separate upfront costs

Charging equipment affects convenience, portability and charging speed; it does not change the electricity cost for the same energy use at the same rate. Tesla’s U.S. home-charging page listed the following equipment prices and estimated installation ranges when observed on October 4, 2026. Listings can change, and installation estimates are not quotes.

Option Tesla-listed equipment price Estimated installation What to know
Mobile Connector $300 $0–$1,500 Portable; can work with supported household outlets and compatible 240 V outlets, subject to suitability and installer approval.
Wall Connector $585 $750–$1,500 Fixed Level 2 option. Installation depends on the home’s electrical system and site conditions.
Universal Wall Connector $660 $750–$1,500 Supports NACS and J1772, according to Tesla.

Tesla says installation costs can vary with the electrical system and work required. A long wire run, additional panel, trenching, main-panel upgrade, pedestal or cable concealment can add work. Ask a certified installer for a site-specific quote. These equipment and installation costs are one-time setup expenses, separate from the recurring electricity bill. See Tesla Home Charging.

Do you need a Wall Connector?

No. Tesla says a Wall Connector is not required for home charging. A Mobile Connector may be suitable with a supported household outlet or a compatible 240 V outlet, but the outlet, adapter and circuit must be appropriate for the vehicle and installation. Confirm compatibility with Tesla and, where needed, a qualified installer.

Tesla’s support page says a standard 120 V household outlet with the Mobile Connector may provide 2–3 miles of charge per hour. An approved 240 V outlet with a suitable adapter may provide up to 30 miles per hour. Tesla also says the Mobile Connector and Wall Connector offer the same maximum 32 A, or up to 30 miles per hour, for Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive and Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive. These are stated charging speeds, not a difference in the kWh required for a given amount of driving.
