In the U.S., an extended car warranty—usually a separately purchased vehicle service contract—can cost from several hundred to several thousand dollars, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). There is no dependable price that applies to every car or contract. Your quote depends on the vehicle, mileage, coverage, term, deductible, provider and payment terms. Compare complete written contracts and total cost, not just monthly payments.

How much does an extended car warranty cost?

Federal Trade Commission guidance gives a broad range of several hundred to several thousand dollars and notes that a deductible may apply each time you take the car in for service or repairs. The FTC does not state a national average, and prices and coverage vary by vehicle and contract. See the FTC’s consumer guidance.

Recent commercial estimates illustrate why a single monthly figure can mislead. Cars.com reports averages based on quotes it requested from 11 extended-warranty companies in February 2026. ConsumerAffairs publishes a different estimate for 2026. Neither is a government survey or a guaranteed quote for your car.

Source and basis Published estimate How to interpret it
Federal Trade Commission, 2023 consumer guidance Several hundred to several thousand dollars A broad range; the FTC does not give an average. A deductible may apply per service or repair.
Cars.com, 2026; quotes requested from 11 companies in February 2026 $117/month for powertrain; $139/month for stated-component; $160/month for bumper-to-bumper Publisher quote-sample averages, not a national survey or a personalized price.
ConsumerAffairs, 2026 estimate $50–$125/month That publisher’s estimate; it notes that vehicle, coverage, deductible, mileage and provider affect price.

The estimates use different methods and are not directly interchangeable. Ask for the full price over the contract term, including any installment or financing cost. A low monthly payment can conceal a higher total amount.

What does “extended car warranty” mean?

People commonly use “extended warranty” to describe an optional vehicle service contract bought separately from the manufacturer’s warranty. The FTC explains that a service contract is not a warranty as defined by federal law because it is purchased separately rather than included with the car. Contracts may be sold by manufacturers, dealers or independent providers; the actual written terms determine what is covered. Read the FTC explanation of auto warranties and service contracts.

A manufacturer’s warranty is generally included in a new vehicle’s price and covers specified defects or failures for a stated time or mileage, whichever comes first. A service contract may extend coverage or include specified maintenance, but it does not automatically cover every repair. Accident damage and normal wear and tear are typically excluded; routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire replacement is also typically excluded. Check the contract rather than relying on the label or a sales description. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains service contracts and typical exclusions.

What affects the price of an extended warranty?

Providers price offers differently, so compare quotes using the same car details, mileage, term and coverage tier. Important variables include:

  • Vehicle and mileage: Make, model, whether the car is new or used, and its odometer reading can affect eligibility and price.
  • Coverage and term: Contracts differ in the systems and repairs they cover, exclusions, and length in months or miles. Broader coverage generally costs more.
  • Deductible and claim limits: Find out whether the deductible applies per repair or visit, whether reimbursement or labor rates are capped, and whether the contract limits where you can get repairs.
  • Provider and payment plan: Identify the company responsible for coverage, compare upfront and installment totals, and ask whether financing adds cost. The FTC recommends checking the responsible company and its complaint history.
  • State and contract terms: Rules, provider requirements, cancellation terms and contract language can vary by state. California’s Department of Insurance lists vehicle type, mileage, coverage and exclusions, and term among the factors affecting price; its guidance is specific to California.

For its state-specific information, see the California Department of Insurance guide to extended warranties.

How to compare extended warranty quotes

  1. Check the coverage you already have. Find the manufacturer warranty’s expiration by date and mileage, plus any remaining used-car or certified-used coverage. Compare those dates with the proposed contract so you can identify months of overlap.
  2. Get the full contract before paying. Check covered systems, exclusions, waiting periods, pre-existing-condition rules, maintenance requirements, deductible, reimbursement limits, labor-rate caps, authorized repair locations, towing or rental benefits, and claim-approval steps. Do not assume a sales promise applies if it is absent from the contract. FTC guidance explains questions to ask before buying: Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts.
  3. Compare total cost over the full term. Record the upfront price or every installment, any financing cost, contract length, likely deductibles, cancellation and refund terms, and any transfer fee. A monthly or yearly equivalent can help you compare offers, but it is not a substitute for the full amount due.
  4. Match the contract to likely repairs and ownership. Consider the vehicle’s condition, how long you expect to keep it and how you use it. Then compare the cost of repairs the contract actually covers against its price, deductible and payment limits. The CFPB recommends weighing contract cost, covered and excluded costs, ownership plans and vehicle use: CFPB vehicle service contract guidance.
  5. For a used car, consider an independent inspection. The FTC recommends a mechanical inspection and written report estimating necessary repairs. An inspection can help you understand the car’s current condition, but it cannot predict every future breakdown or guarantee contract coverage. See the FTC guide to buying a used car.
  6. Compare self-funding. Setting aside money for repairs is an alternative the FTC suggests. The choice involves how much risk and expense you can absorb and whether you prefer a predictable contract payment; there is no universal break-even calculation established by the cited guidance.

Is an extended warranty worth it?

There is no general yes-or-no answer based on price alone. A contract’s value depends on whether a repair is covered and approved, how much the provider pays, where repairs can be performed, and the deductible and other limits. A lower-priced contract may be less useful if its exclusions or repair restrictions rule out repairs you care about; a broader contract may cost more without matching your ownership plans.

Use the written terms to compare the contract’s total cost and likely out-of-pocket expenses with the repairs it could cover during the time you expect to own the vehicle. Include existing warranty coverage in that calculation so you can see where the contract overlaps. If you choose not to buy, saving for repairs is a possible alternative, but it leaves you responsible for costs as they arise.

Claims, cancellations and “warranty expiring” messages

Before buying, check how to submit a claim, who arranges repairs, which repair facilities are allowed, what reimbursement or labor-rate limits apply, and whether towing or rental costs are fully reimbursed. Those details can affect what you pay and how a covered repair is handled. The FTC’s service-contract guidance recommends asking about the claim process and repair arrangements.

The CFPB says consumers have the right to cancel a vehicle service contract. The amount and method of any refund depend on the contract’s cancellation and refund clause and applicable state rules; check both before signing. See CFPB guidance on vehicle service contracts.

Calls, texts and mail warning that a warranty is about to expire may be marketing for a separately sold service contract and can falsely imply a connection to your carmaker or dealer. The FTC warns against pressure to provide financial information or a down payment before you have contract details. Verify the seller and the company responsible for coverage, and read the contract before agreeing to buy: FTC advice on auto warranties and service contracts.
