The firing order listed in the cited Dodge 4.7L V8 service information is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. That sequence is not a cylinder-location diagram: on the cited Dakota layout, cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7 are on the left bank, while 2, 4, 6 and 8 are on the right, numbered from the front of the engine toward the rear.
What is the Dodge 4.7 firing order?
The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. It is the sequence in which the eight cylinders fire, not the order in which they sit across the engine. The same sequence appears in reproduced service information for a 2003 Dakota 4WD 4.7L and a 2008 Ram 1500 4WD 4.7L (2003 Dakota service information; 2008 Ram 1500 service information).
Where is cylinder 1?
For the cited Dakota 4.7L layout, cylinder numbers run from the front of the engine toward the rear:
- Left bank: 1, 3, 5, 7
- Right bank: 2, 4, 6, 8
“Left” and “right” refer to the engine’s banks, not necessarily what appears to be left or right when you stand in front of the vehicle. Use a diagram or service reference that clearly identifies the engine front and viewing orientation before locating a cylinder.

Does the firing order show spark-plug wire routing?
No. The reproduced 2002 Dakota ignition description says each spark plug has its own coil mounted over it, with no spark-plug secondary cables (2002 Dakota ignition-system description). On this coil-on-plug arrangement, the firing order is not a conventional distributor-cap or plug-wire routing diagram.
Check the exact vehicle before servicing
The cited references cover particular model years and applications. Before buying ignition parts or using removal, torque, or adjustment procedures, identify the vehicle’s year, model, drivetrain and engine code, then use matching service information. A spark-plug type or gap listed for one 2003 Ram application is not a universal specification for every Dodge 4.7L (2003 Ram spark-plug specification).
