Start with the VIN: a new-car window sticker, also called a Monroney label, describes a specific vehicle and its manufacturer’s stated equipment and price. Then read the price, fuel-economy or EV estimates, safety information, and origin disclosures as separate kinds of information. The sticker is not the dealer’s out-the-door quote, and its operating-cost estimates are not promises about your own use.
1. Confirm the sticker matches the car
Check the VIN on the label against the vehicle, then compare the model year, make, model, trim, paint and interior description, and powertrain. A label is vehicle-specific: two cars with the same trim can have different factory options. If the VIN or configuration does not match, pause and ask the dealer to resolve the discrepancy before relying on the price or equipment list.
For a practical overview of the label’s vehicle-specific details, see Capital One Auto Navigator’s guide to reading a new-car window sticker.
2. Tell standard equipment from priced options
The standard-equipment section describes what comes with the trim’s base price. Factory options and packages appear separately and can raise the sticker’s total MSRP. Automakers use different layouts and names, so look for whether each item is listed as standard equipment, an option, or an add-on.

A nearby dealership addendum is not necessarily part of the manufacturer’s original label. Check whether an accessory is already installed and whether it appears on the factory sticker or on a separate dealer document.
3. Read the MSRP—and get a separate transaction quote
The sticker’s total MSRP is built from the base vehicle price, priced factory options, and the destination or delivery charge. It is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not a required selling price and not automatically the final amount you will pay.

| Price item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Base vehicle price | The starting manufacturer price for the vehicle and trim. |
| Options and packages | Factory-priced equipment added to the base configuration. |
| Destination or delivery | The charge shown on the manufacturer’s label; include it when comparing total sticker prices. |
| Total MSRP | The manufacturer’s stated total for the vehicle and listed factory equipment. |
| Dealer addendum or market adjustment | A separate dealer-listed amount or item. Ask what it covers and whether it is optional. |
| Out-the-door total | Get this separately in writing, itemized to show the selling price, taxes, title and registration or other government fees, and any dealer products or add-ons. |
Factory labels do not include available incentives, taxes, title, or registration fees; dealer addenda may list non-factory extras or market adjustments. Use the sticker to understand the manufacturer’s stated vehicle and MSRP, and the written buyer’s order or out-the-door quote to understand the proposed transaction. Do not assume that an item on a dealer addendum is factory-installed.
4. Interpret the gasoline fuel-economy panel
The EPA supplies fuel-economy data used on new-car and light-truck labels. For gasoline vehicles, the panel commonly shows city, highway, and combined miles per gallon (MPG), with combined MPG useful as a quick comparison. It may also list gallons per 100 miles, estimated annual fuel cost, a five-year fuel-cost comparison with an average new vehicle, greenhouse-gas information, and a smog rating. See the EPA’s interactive gasoline vehicle label guide and its fuel-economy label information.

- Keep the ratings distinct. Fuel-economy and greenhouse-gas ratings, and the separate smog rating, are not crash-test ratings.
EPA explains its role and fuel-economy labeling information on its basic information on fuel-economy labeling page.
5. Read EV and plug-in-hybrid figures in their own terms
Electric and plug-in-hybrid labels can show city, highway, and combined MPGe; electricity use in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (kWh/100 miles); estimated annual energy cost; estimated range; and 240-volt charge time. They may also include greenhouse-gas and smog ratings and a QR code for additional details. EPA’s interactive electric-vehicle label guide describes the figures and their assumptions.

- MPGe puts electric energy use on a miles-per-gallon-equivalent scale to help compare vehicles across technologies.
- kWh/100 miles expresses electricity consumption more directly; a lower number means less electricity is used for the same distance under the label’s test.
- Range and charge time are estimates, not guarantees for every trip or charging setup. Consider the label’s assumptions when comparing vehicles.
- Annual energy cost depends on the assumptions printed on the label, including annual miles and energy prices.
The QR code can lead to more detailed or customizable EPA information. It can help you examine the estimates, but it does not verify that the sticker belongs to the car in front of you.

NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program provides crash-protection and rollover information for vehicles tested through the program. A blank rating area does not mean the vehicle received zero stars; it means a rating is not shown there. Check NHTSA’s current safety ratings and match results to the model year and vehicle you are considering. NHTSA also explains the label context on its fuel economy and environment label page.

7. Understand the content and assembly disclosures
American Automobile Labeling Act disclosures describe U.S. and Canadian parts content and manufacturing locations, including final assembly and certain component locations. NHTSA says these details are based on manufacturer submissions. They may appear on the Monroney label, on the fuel-economy label, or on a separate label, so do not expect them in one fixed position. NHTSA’s Part 583 reports page explains the information and its placement.
8. Compare two cars by matching like with like
Compare the vehicles in this order so a lower sticker total or a better efficiency estimate does not obscure a difference in configuration:
Quick Recap
- Identity and configuration: model year, trim, drivetrain, engine or battery, and VIN-specific options.
- Equipment: standard features versus priced factory packages and separate dealer add-ons.
- Manufacturer price: base MSRP, options, destination or delivery, and total MSRP. Compare written out-the-door quotes separately.
- Operating-cost estimates: combined MPG or MPGe, gallons or kWh per 100 miles, annual estimate, and the assumptions behind it.
- EV usability: estimated range and charge time, read in light of the label’s assumptions.
- Safety evidence: available NHTSA ratings for the exact model year; distinguish unavailable information from a low score.
- Origin disclosures: assembly and parts-content details if they matter to your decision.
What to do when the sticker and paperwork differ
- Recheck the VIN on the vehicle and the manufacturer’s label.
- Separate the official manufacturer sticker from any supplemental dealership addendum.
- Ask the dealer to itemize each difference and identify it as a factory option, dealer-installed accessory, market adjustment, tax, government fee, or optional product.
- Request the proposed out-the-door total in writing before deciding. The signed purchase documents establish the transaction being offered.
