EV Database estimates consumption of 253 Wh per mile for the eDrive35 and 254 Wh per mile for the eDrive40 in the cited model entries. At an illustrative electricity rate of £0.30/kWh, that works out to about 7.6p per mile for energy, before charging losses. Your actual bill will depend on your tariff, charging mix, mileage and conditions.
How to estimate the i4’s electricity cost
Convert the model’s estimated consumption to kilowatt-hours per mile, then multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour:
Energy cost per mile = consumption in kWh/mile × electricity price in £/kWh.
For the cited eDrive40 estimate, 254 Wh per mile is 0.254 kWh per mile. At a hypothetical £0.30/kWh, the calculation is 0.254 × £0.30 = £0.0762, or about 7.6p per mile. The eDrive35 estimate is 253 Wh per mile, which produces a very similar result at the same assumed rate. These are estimates, not measurements of a particular used car; temperature, speed, terrain and cabin heating can change consumption. See the EV Database eDrive35 entry and eDrive40 entry.

To estimate a full-pack charge, multiply the usable battery capacity in kWh by your rate per kWh. BMW describes this as a general calculation, not a tariff quote, and notes that drivers typically recharge before the battery is empty, so an ordinary charging session costs less than a full-pack estimate. See BMW UK’s electric-car cost overview.
Estimate your yearly electricity spend
Multiply your expected annual miles by the cost per mile, using your actual tariff. If you charge at more than one rate, calculate the cost for each share of your mileage separately and add the results. Include charging losses in your household estimate: the per-mile calculation above uses the vehicle’s estimated energy consumption and is before those losses. Without your mileage, tariff and charging split, there is no reliable single annual figure.

Home and public charging costs
Home charging can make use of a lower overnight rate if your electricity plan offers one. BMW UK recommends a 7 kW Universal Home Charger and identifies Pod Point as its supplier. That is a recommendation, not a requirement: check whether the property already has a suitable charger, whether installation is possible and what your electricity tariff actually charges before adding equipment costs to your budget.
For the cited eDrive40 entry, EV Database lists an 11 kW maximum onboard AC charging rate that requires a three-phase connection. It describes 7.4 kW as typical for most homes and charge points, and estimates about 13 hours for a full charge at that rate. Treat those as model-entry guidance, not a promise about your home setup; available power, installation and charging conditions affect the result. Rapid charging power and time also vary with conditions and the vehicle’s charging curve.

BMW says its Approved Used electric cars include a Mode 3 AC public charging cable as standard. It says a Mode 2 Flexible Charging cable can be purchased for home use if there is no home charger. Confirm the exact car’s supplied equipment rather than assuming a cable or charger is included.
Compare charging options using your own rates
- Check the per-kWh price for each home or public option you expect to use.
- Include any subscription or connection fees that apply to your charging access.
- Estimate what share of your miles will be charged at each rate, then calculate those shares separately.
- For battery-life guidance, BMW’s Approved Used information says the ideal charging level is between 10% and 80%. This is a general recommendation, not a prohibition on charging above 80%.
Battery health, warranty and servicing on a used i4
BMW says its Approved Used electric cars receive a Battery Health Quick Report showing the battery’s current state of health relative to its original capacity. Review the report for the individual car rather than assuming battery condition from the model name or age alone.

BMW’s high-voltage battery warranty covers failures due to manufacturing defects for up to eight years from first registration or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The maximum term is not necessarily what remains on a used car: check its first-registration date, mileage and warranty conditions. BMW also says Approved Used all-electric cars need regular servicing every two years, not according to mileage. See BMW UK’s Approved Used electric-car information.

The UK Government says electric cars are in many cases cheaper to run than petrol or diesel cars and cites independent research estimating an average £700 annual saving for EVs. That is a general EV estimate, not a BMW i4 saving. The same government guidance says around 80% of UK drivers buy cars on the used market; that is market context, not an i4-specific statistic. See the UK Government’s electric-vehicle costs and charging guidance.
Quick Recap
Checks to make before buying
- Use your own electricity tariff, expected mileage and home-versus-public charging split to estimate energy costs.
- Check whether the property has a suitable charging setup and confirm which cables come with the car.
- Review the individual Battery Health Quick Report, service history and remaining battery warranty.
- Get vehicle- and driver-specific insurance, tyre, servicing and repair estimates; compare purchase price and condition separately from charging cost.
- When comparing two used i4s, consider variant and model year, battery health, mileage, history, warranty remaining and wheel and tyre specification alongside price.
