For U.S. model years, the Datsun 240Z ran from 1970–1973, the 260Z was the 1974 model, and the 280Z covered 1975–1978. The names track rounded engine displacements—2.4, 2.6, and 2.8 liters—and the 260Z also brought an extended-roof 2+2 body with a small rear seat. These distinctions describe U.S. Datsun-badged cars; the naming and timing do not apply universally to every market.
How do the 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z differ?
| U.S. model | U.S. model years | Named displacement | Body and seating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datsun 240Z | 1970–1973 | 2.4 liters, as reflected in the model name | Two-seat coupe |
| Datsun 260Z | 1974 | 2.6 liters | Two-seat coupe or extended-roof 2+2 with a small rear seat |
| Datsun 280Z | 1975–1978 | 2.8 liters | Two-seat coupe or 2+2 |
The year groupings are corroborated by the Z Car Club Association’s 2023 judging manual. Nissan’s U.S. history describes the displacement changes and the 260Z-era arrival of the 2+2 body; the figures here are rounded nameplate descriptions, not a full engine-specification comparison. What changed with the 260Z’s 2+2 body?
The 260Z range introduced a longer-roof 2+2 alongside the two-seat coupe. Its small rear seat makes the body configuration the clearest practical distinction within the 1974 range. The 2+2 continued as a body choice in the 280Z years. If comparing cars, check whether each example is a two-seater or a 2+2 rather than assuming the model badge alone identifies the seating layout.
Do these names and dates apply outside the United States?
No. This timeline refers specifically to U.S. model years and Datsun-badged export cars. Nissan says the 240Z first went to North America as an export, and the model joined Japan’s domestic Fairlady Z lineup in November 1971. Nissan USA also places the 1970 U.S. car within the broader Fairlady Z/S30 lineage. Those related names and market histories should not be treated as interchangeable model-year labels. What specifications are not established by this comparison?
The sources cited here do not provide a consistent U.S.-market, year-by-year specification table for horsepower, fuel delivery, transmissions, brakes, trim, or exterior details. The name 280Z alone is not enough to establish a particular car’s fuel system or equipment. For those specifics, consult period U.S. brochures or service manuals for the exact model year and configuration.
