How Much Does a Large SUV Cost to Run? Fuel, Tires, and Maintenance Explained

There is no universal annual cost for a large SUV. Calculate fuel from your exact mpg and mileage, price the vehicle-specific tires, separate maintenance from repairs, and include insurance, fees, financing and depreciation when comparing total ownership cost.

A large SUV does not have one reliable annual running-cost figure. Fuel economy, miles driven, city/highway mix, fuel prices, tire fitment and service needs can move the budget by thousands of dollars. The most defensible approach is to calculate fuel for the exact vehicle, price its correct tires, follow its maintenance schedule and then add ownership costs such as insurance, taxes, financing and depreciation. Published AAA figures are useful benchmarks, but the latest SUV comparison is for the medium-SUV category rather than a universal large-SUV class.

Why a large-SUV budget cannot be reduced to one number

“Large SUV” is a consumer description, not a single standardized cost category in the figures available for this topic. A three-row body-on-frame vehicle, a large unibody crossover and a premium model can have very different curb weights, engines, tire sizes, service schedules and purchase prices. Two drivers of the same model can also have different bills if one drives 8,000 miles a year in suburban traffic and the other drives 25,000 miles with a trailer.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A useful estimate therefore needs seven inputs:

  • Model year, make, model, trim and drivetrain.
  • Annual miles.
  • City/highway driving ratio and traffic conditions.
  • Local gasoline, diesel or electricity prices.
  • Correct tire size, load rating and replacement interval.
  • The manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and likely repair exposure.
  • Insurance, registration fees, financing and depreciation if you want total ownership cost rather than operating cost alone.

AAA’s “Your Driving Costs” calculator is designed around those variables. It produces comparative estimates, not a promise of what any individual owner will pay; actual results change with vehicle condition, driving style, weather, labor rates and local prices.

Published benchmarks: useful context, not a large-SUV quote

The most recent published numbers establish boundaries for planning, but they must be labeled correctly. AAA Mountain West Group’s September 15, 2026 analysis reported an average annual cost of $12,863 to own and operate a new vehicle. That figure covered seven cost categories across 34 top-selling models, using a five-year, 75,000-mile personal-use frame. It was not isolated to large SUVs, and the study used $4.15 per gallon as its regular-gasoline input at the time. Because the methodology was updated, AAA says the overall result is not directly comparable with the prior year.

AAA’s 2025 SUV comparison was for medium SUVs. At 15,000 miles per year, it reported the following category-level values:

Medium-SUV powertrain Annual fuel cost Annual maintenance cost What the figures include
Gasoline $2,198 $1,769 Fuel is the study’s fuel estimate. Maintenance combines routine service, unexpected repairs and tire replacements.
Hybrid $1,631 $1,679 Same 15,000-mile comparison; maintenance is not a tire-only figure.
Electric $862 $1,632 Electricity and maintenance estimates for the medium-SUV category; not a large-SUV quote.

AAA also listed an average driving cost of 83.89 cents per mile for the medium-SUV category in 2025, describing it as the second-most-expensive category in that comparison. That number is a broad ownership measure, not fuel spending: it reflects the study’s treatment of depreciation, financing, insurance, fees, maintenance and fuel. Applying it to a particular large SUV would imply a precision the source does not support.

For fuel-economy context, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported 27.2 mpg as the average real-world fuel economy for all new vehicles in model year 2024 and 25.7 mpg for truck SUVs. EPA’s truck-SUV classification is regulatory and does not map perfectly to every shopper’s idea of a large SUV. Use those values as reference points, not as the rating for your vehicle.

How to calculate fuel cost for your SUV

Fuel is usually the easiest running cost to model because the calculation is transparent:

Annual fuel cost = annual miles ÷ real-world mpg × local price per gallon.

Use the vehicle’s actual combined fuel economy when possible, then adjust your expectation for towing, roof cargo, winter temperatures, idling and short trips. A window-sticker value is a controlled test result; your route and habits determine the number that matters to your wallet.

Illustrative sensitivity at 15,000 miles

The following examples use $4.15 per gallon, the gasoline price input in AAA Mountain West Group’s 2026 study. They are arithmetic illustrations, not estimates for a specific large SUV:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Real-world economy Gallons for 15,000 miles Fuel cost at $4.15/gal
20 mpg 750 gallons $3,112.50
25.7 mpg About 584 gallons About $2,422
30 mpg 500 gallons $2,075

The 25.7-mpg row uses EPA’s 2024 truck-SUV average only as a mathematical reference. A heavy, four-wheel-drive, three-row SUV may be below it, while a smaller or hybridized vehicle may be above it. Every five miles per gallon of improvement has a larger effect at higher annual mileage: at 20,000 miles, moving from 20 to 25 mpg cuts consumption from 1,000 to 800 gallons, a 200-gallon difference before price changes.

Make the fuel estimate match your driving

  • Separate city and highway mileage if your vehicle has different ratings and your use is strongly skewed one way.
  • Include towing miles separately; aerodynamic drag and weight can reduce economy sharply.
  • Use the price you actually pay in your state or region, and update the calculation when prices move.
  • For an electric SUV, replace gallons with kilowatt-hours per mile and include charging losses; the AAA medium-SUV electricity figure cannot be transferred to a different vehicle without its energy-use data and local electricity rate.

Tires: why there is no universal large-SUV tire allowance

The available evidence does not isolate a standalone annual tire budget for large SUVs. AAA places tire replacements inside its maintenance total, alongside routine maintenance and unexpected repairs. Consequently, the $1,769 gas, $1,679 hybrid and $1,632 electric values in the 2025 medium-SUV comparison must not be presented as tire costs.

Tire spending depends on the exact fitment and how the SUV is used. Wheel diameter, tire width, load index, speed rating, all-season or winter specification, run-flat construction, off-road design, alignment, rotation practices, road damage and towing can all change both the purchase price and service life. Four replacement tires may be needed at once, or one damaged tire may require matching the tread depth of the others.

Price a tire budget correctly

  1. Read the driver-door placard and owner’s manual for the approved size, load index, speed rating and inflation pressures. Do not assume that another trim’s tire is suitable.
  2. Record the current tire’s brand, model, size and remaining tread. The placard and manual take priority over a retailer’s generic SUV category.
  3. Request a complete installed quote for four tires, including mounting, balancing, valve hardware, disposal, taxes and any alignment the vehicle needs.
  4. Ask about mileage warranties and the rotation schedule, but treat a warranty as a condition-based promise rather than a guaranteed lifespan.
  5. Divide the installed price by the miles you realistically expect from that set to create a planning cost per mile, then keep a reserve for punctures, uneven wear and seasonal tires.

That method gives you a vehicle-specific tire reserve without pretending that one large-SUV tire size or one replacement interval fits every model.

Maintenance and repairs: what the published totals mean

Maintenance is broader than oil changes. In AAA’s comparison it includes scheduled routine work, unexpected repairs and tire replacements. A vehicle with expensive brakes, multiple axles, turbocharged engines, air suspension or advanced driver-assistance sensors can have a different repair profile from a simpler SUV even when both are the same size.

Use the owner’s manual for time- and mileage-based services, including fluids, filters, spark plugs, belts, inspections and drivetrain checks. Keep scheduled work separate from a contingency reserve for repairs that are possible but not predictable. A new vehicle may spend little on repairs early in its life but lose value through depreciation; an older SUV may reverse that pattern.

Why powertrain comparisons need care

In AAA’s 2025 medium-SUV comparison at 15,000 miles, gasoline models had the highest listed fuel cost, while electric models had the lowest. The maintenance figures were closer together because AAA’s definition includes more than propulsion-system service. A hybrid can reduce fuel use without eliminating tires, brakes, suspension work or collision repairs. An electric SUV avoids oil changes but still needs tires, alignment, cooling-system service where specified and repairs to its many electronic systems.

AAA Mountain West Group spokesperson David Caltabiano said on September 15, 2026: “By looking at EVs, hybrids and traditional gas-powered vehicles within the same categories, consumers can better understand how total ownership costs vary by powertrain.” He added that considering depreciation and other expenses helps show the full ownership picture. That warning matters: a fuel advantage alone does not establish a lower total cost.

  1. Select your state or location so fuel prices, taxes and fees use the appropriate geography.
  2. Enter annual mileage. Use your odometer history or commuting, school, errands and vacation miles instead of an optimistic guess.
  3. Set the city/highway driving ratio. If you tow or idle frequently, recognize that the standard ratio may understate fuel use.
  4. Choose the vehicle year, make, model and trim. Verify drivetrain and wheel configuration because they can change fuel economy and tire requirements.
  5. Enter or confirm the fuel price. The calculator’s result changes when the pump price changes; the $4.15 figure in the 2026 study is not a permanent national price.
  6. Review each category separately: fuel, maintenance, insurance, fees, financing and depreciation. Use maintenance as a combined planning figure, not as a tire-only line.
  7. Compare alternatives only after matching annual miles, driving mix, location and ownership horizon. Otherwise the apparent difference may come from assumptions rather than the vehicles.

Save the result with the date and assumptions. Recalculate after a move, a major mileage change, a new insurance premium or a sustained fuel-price shift.

Operating cost versus total ownership cost

Readers often use “cost to run” to mean fuel, tires and service paid from a household budget. AAA’s ownership framework is wider. It includes fuel and maintenance, but also insurance, registration and other fees, financing and depreciation. Those categories can dominate the total for a costly new SUV even when its fuel bill is moderate.

Budget view Include Best use
Cash operating budget Fuel or charging, scheduled service, repairs, tires, fluids and roadside incidents Planning monthly cash needs after purchase
Full ownership cost Operating items plus insurance, taxes, registration, financing and depreciation Comparing vehicles, leases, loans or replacement timing
Per-mile cost Total selected costs divided by miles driven Comparing a long commute, fleet use or alternate transportation

Keep these views separate. A vehicle with a low fuel bill can still cost more overall if it depreciates faster, carries higher insurance premiums or requires a larger loan.

Ways to keep a large SUV’s recurring costs under control

  • Choose the smallest wheel and tire package approved for your trim if ride, appearance and handling priorities allow; lower-cost replacement choices may follow, but never deviate from the required load and speed ratings.
  • Maintain correct tire pressure from the placard, rotate as specified and repair alignment problems promptly. Underinflation increases wear and fuel use.
  • Combine errands, avoid extended idling and remove unused roof racks or cargo that add drag and weight.
  • Follow the service schedule rather than postponing fluid, brake or inspection work until a warning appears. Deferred maintenance can turn a planned expense into a breakdown.
  • Price insurance, registration and financing before purchase. These fixed or semi-fixed costs can outweigh small differences in fuel economy.
  • Keep service records and receipts. Documentation helps diagnose recurring faults and supports resale value, although resale value itself is model- and market-dependent.

Common budgeting mistakes

  • Calling a medium-SUV benchmark a large-SUV average. The AAA 2025 figures are category context, not a universal large-SUV estimate.
  • Using maintenance as a tire-only number. AAA’s maintenance line combines routine work, unexpected repairs and tire replacements.
  • Multiplying a laboratory mpg rating by annual miles without adjustment. Traffic, weather, towing and cargo can materially change real-world consumption.
  • Ignoring mileage. A 15,000-mile comparison cannot be applied unchanged to a driver covering 25,000 miles.
  • Comparing powertrains on fuel alone. Depreciation, financing, insurance, taxes and service belong in a total-cost comparison.
  • Buying tires by vehicle name only. Confirm the placard’s complete specification for the exact trim and wheel package.
  • Treating a study input as a current quote. AAA’s $4.15-per-gallon figure describes its 2026 analysis input, not every driver’s present price.

A practical way to set your annual reserve

Start with your own odometer miles and local fuel price, then calculate fuel from conservative real-world mpg. Add the installed cost of the correct tire set divided by its expected service miles, plus the owner’s scheduled maintenance costs and a separate repair reserve. Finally, add insurance, registration, financing and depreciation if you are deciding whether the SUV is affordable rather than merely estimating cash operating expenses.

Use the AAA calculator to test the assumptions, retain the exact vehicle and location inputs, and label every benchmark by category, mileage and date. That produces a range you can defend and update; a single nationwide “large SUV” number would conceal the variables that determine what you actually pay.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
