A defensible budget starts with one exact car, your country, mileage, storage, insurance terms, warranty status and ownership period. Separate the cash you spend each year from depreciation and financing, which are economic costs rather than workshop bills.
Why a single “annual hypercar cost” is misleading
A hypercar is not a standard expense category. A nearly unused car in secure private storage has a different budget from one driven 5,000 miles a year, transported to events and maintained by a factory-authorized specialist. The purchase year, condition, service history and whether the car is still covered by a manufacturer program can change the result by more than the fuel bill.

Set these assumptions before asking for a number:
- Exact model and model year: service intervals, tire sizes, hybrid systems and parts prices are not interchangeable.
- Market and location: taxes, registration, fuel prices, insurance rules and dealer access depend on country and sometimes on state or province.
- Annual mileage and use: road driving, track use, events and long-term storage create different wear patterns.
- Ownership horizon: a one-year cash budget does not show a four-year major service or eventual resale loss.
- Coverage: identify what is included maintenance, what is warranty work and what you must pay for.
Without those inputs, a quoted total is usually a guess dressed as precision.

| Category | What to include | How to estimate it honestly |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase and taxes | Acquisition price, sales or value-added tax, registration, delivery and inspection | Use the actual transaction and local tax rules; do not treat the sticker price as the cash required. |
| Financing or capital | Loan interest, fees or the opportunity cost of cash | Use your financing offer or a stated cost-of-capital assumption. |
| Depreciation | Purchase price less expected resale proceeds | Model a conservative resale case for the same horizon. Do not assume collector appreciation. |
| Scheduled service | Factory inspections, fluids, filters, diagnostic work and labor | Obtain a current quote for the vehicle identification number and note any included plan. |
| Repairs and consumables | Tires, brakes, batteries, fluids, belts, cosmetic wear and unexpected faults | Use model-specific intervals and documented quotes. A service-hour figure is not a price. |
| Insurance | Premium, deductible, agreed value, mileage limit and storage requirements | Request a quote using the exact driver, address, value and intended use. |
| Fuel | Fuel consumed during your expected mileage | Multiply real-world fuel use by local pump prices; official test data is only a starting point. |
| Storage and movement | Secure garaging, battery maintenance, climate control, transport and event access | Use your facility and transporter quotes, including trips to an authorized specialist. |
| Taxes and administration | Annual registration, property or luxury taxes where applicable | Apply the rules for your location and the car’s declared value. |
Add the cash categories for the amount leaving your bank account. Then calculate economic ownership cost separately: purchase price plus financing and running costs, minus the vehicle’s eventual sale proceeds.

What factory service schedules reveal
Bugatti Chiron and Veyron
Bugatti’s March 4, 2021 Passeport Tranquillité release illustrates why low mileage does not eliminate maintenance. It describes a Chiron annual “Low” service requiring up to 14 workshop hours and a “Major” service every four years taking around 72 hours. Those are labor-time descriptions, not prices; the hourly rate, parts, taxes and any additional findings determine the invoice.
The same release describes an alternating Veyron schedule: one service of approximately 14 hours and another of roughly 32 hours. It also mentions a Collector plan for cars driven no more than 200 km per year. That example is important for stored cars: time-based inspections and preservation work can still be required even when the odometer barely moves.
Bugatti’s figures show the cadence, not your annual bill. A four-year horizon should reserve for the major visit instead of dividing an assumed invoice without a dealer quote. Ask whether the quoted labor includes fluids, filters, diagnostic scans, replacement parts and taxes.

Fuel data is not a fuel budget
Bugatti lists WLTP combined consumption of 25.2 l/100 km for the Chiron, Chiron Sport, Chiron Pur Sport and Chiron Profilée. It lists 21.5 l/100 km for the Chiron Super Sport and Super Sport 300+. These are manufacturer-published test figures, not a promise of real-world consumption in traffic, cold weather or high-load driving.

Convert the figure into a use estimate before applying your local fuel price:
- Choose expected annual distance in miles or kilometres.
- Convert miles to kilometres by multiplying by 1.60934.
- Multiply kilometres by the consumption figure and divide by 100 to obtain litres.
- Multiply litres by the price of the required fuel grade.
For example, 5,000 km at 25.2 l/100 km is 1,260 litres under the WLTP assumption. Your worksheet should label that as a test-cycle scenario and add a separate, clearly identified real-world assumption rather than presenting it as observed owner consumption.
How maintenance programs and warranties change exposure
Included maintenance is not unlimited coverage
Ferrari’s 2024 annual-report materials describe a seven-year scheduled-maintenance program offered free on new cars since 2011. The same materials describe warranty-extension products and a hybrid warranty extension that can include high-voltage battery replacement at year eight. Treat those statements as program descriptions, not proof that every used car has coverage: eligibility, transfer rules, model, market and in-service date matter. Confirm the exact terms in the vehicle’s paperwork or with an authorized dealer.

Lamborghini’s official warranty page states that new vehicles receive three years of unlimited-mileage warranty coverage from delivery under normal use. It explicitly warns that conditions vary by country. The Selezione approved-used route can provide extended protection, but eligibility is bounded by vehicle age and mileage and requires a 150-point checklist for renewal. A dealer must confirm whether a particular car qualifies and which components remain covered.

Bugatti extended arrangements are dated offers
A February 10, 2022 Bugatti customer-experience release described optional service and extended arrangements for Chiron and Veyron owners. It said a new Chiron could be configured with added service and warranty coverage for a total of eight years and described an approved-used Chiron offer with annual service and a 12-month bumper-to-bumper warranty. Those were published program terms at that time; current availability, regional scope and eligibility must be checked before assigning them value in a budget.
For any manufacturer plan, obtain a written schedule showing what is included, the expiration date, mileage limits, exclusions, transferability and the price of renewal. Scheduled maintenance, warranty repairs and consumables are separate lines in your worksheet.
A step-by-step method for calculating your own cost
1. Define the vehicle and horizon
Record the VIN or exact specification, purchase date, mileage, condition, service records and the period you will own it. Run at least a one-year cash view and a five-year economic view so infrequent work is visible.

3. Price insurance from the real risk profile
Give insurers the exact value, garaging address, driver history, annual mileage, usage, deductible and whether you need agreed-value coverage. Ask about restrictions on track days, events, valet parking, transport and who may drive. A generic luxury-car average cannot substitute for this quote.
4. Estimate use and wear
Use a documented real-world fuel assumption and local fuel price. Add tires, brakes and other consumables only when you have a model-specific interval, quotation or replacement history. Track use can consume tires and brakes faster than ordinary road mileage, so keep it as a separate scenario.
5. Add keeping and moving costs
Include secure storage, climate control, battery tendering, detailing, registration, taxes and specialist transport. If the nearest qualified workshop is several hours away, budget collection and delivery rather than assuming every visit is a local trip.

6. Calculate depreciation without pretending to know the future
Use this transparent formula: depreciation = purchase price and acquisition taxes − expected sale proceeds. Run conservative, central and optimistic resale cases, and label them as assumptions. Do not count an assumed appreciation rate as income or use a headline auction result as a guaranteed exit price.

7. Report two totals
Your annual cash outlay is service, repairs, consumables, insurance, fuel, storage, transport and taxes actually paid during the year. Your economic ownership cost adds financing or cost of capital and depreciation, then spreads one-time acquisition costs over the chosen horizon. Present both so a low-spend year does not disguise a large loss in value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why mileage alone is a poor proxy for cost
Low mileage reduces fuel and distance-related wear, but it does not cancel calendar-based servicing, battery care, fluid aging, tire age, seals or the need to exercise complex systems. Bugatti’s 200-km-per-year Collector example demonstrates this directly. Conversely, heavy use can raise fuel, tire, brake and transport costs while making a manufacturer’s mileage-limited warranty less relevant than its exclusions for competition or abnormal use.
Storage also creates its own risk. A car that sits for months may require a controlled charging routine, tire-pressure management and specialist recommissioning. Include those tasks even if they do not appear as conventional “maintenance” on a retail invoice.
How to compare two hypercars without producing a false winner
Use the same mileage, ownership period, resale assumptions and insurance basis for both vehicles. Compare these axes in one worksheet:
- Scheduled-service cadence, labor time and what the factory plan includes.
- Warranty duration, mileage limits, exclusions, transfer rules and regional conditions.
- Expected repair complexity, parts access and distance to qualified service.
- Tire, brake and battery requirements for your actual use.
- Fuel assumption and required fuel grade.
- Storage, transport and event costs.
- Purchase taxes, financing terms and resale uncertainty.
Never compare one car’s scheduled-maintenance quote with another car’s all-in ownership estimate. Put both on the same basis and show unknown values as “not stated” until a dealer, insurer or tax authority supplies them.
Questions to ask before buying
- What service is due by date and by mileage, and what was actually completed?
- Which maintenance or warranty programs remain active, and do they transfer to me?
- What are the exclusions for track use, storage, modifications and non-factory parts?
- Can the dealer provide a written estimate for the next routine service and the next major interval?
- Are tires, brakes, hybrid components and specialist diagnostic work covered or owner-paid?
- What insurance agreed value, mileage limit and garaging conditions can I obtain?
- How far must the car travel for authorized service, and who pays for transport?
- What taxes and registration charges apply in my jurisdiction?
A defensible answer to the ownership question
A hypercar’s real cost is the result of a vehicle-specific model, not a universal annual figure. The most reliable estimate combines written service and insurance quotes with your mileage, storage and fuel assumptions, then keeps depreciation and financing in a separate economic-cost calculation. Manufacturer examples show why the details matter: a Chiron can require up to 14 hours for an annual low service and around 72 hours for a four-year major service, while even a 200-km-per-year storage plan still calls for service. Build the calendar, price each exposure and state every assumption; that is the only honest way to know what ownership will cost.
