The last air-cooled Porsche 911s are the Type 993, whose production ended in 1998. In the U.S., a dated guide example puts a 1997 Carrera Cabriolet in good condition at $57,667–$71,000; a separate estimate for a 1998 Carrera Cabriolet in good condition with average specification is around $65,000. Those figures are useful starting points, not a single price for every 993: trim, body style, condition, mileage and history can change the comparison substantially.
What counts as the last air-cooled Porsche 911?
The 993 is the final air-cooled 911 generation. Porsche says the generation was produced from 1993 through 1998, with 68,881 examples built. U.S. model-year listings commonly describe the 993 range as 1995–1998, so “993” is the clearest way to identify the generation across markets and model-year conventions. Porsche Newsroom’s 30-year history provides the production context.
What do ordinary Carrera examples cost?
Two U.S. guide examples give a practical snapshot, but they cover specific Cabriolet configurations rather than every Carrera or every 993. Hagerty’s July 2026 Good-condition guide range for a 1997 Carrera Cabriolet is $57,667–$71,000. Its page for the 1998 Carrera Cabriolet describes a good-condition car with average specification as typically costing around $65,000. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed transaction prices. Hagerty’s 1997 Carrera Cabriolet valuation and its 1998 Carrera Cabriolet valuation identify the respective examples.
| Example | Figure | Geography, date and basis |
|---|---|---|
| 1997 Carrera Cabriolet | $57,667–$71,000 | U.S.; Hagerty Good-condition guide range, July 2026 |
| 1998 Carrera Cabriolet | Around $65,000 | U.S.; Hagerty typical estimate for good condition and average specification; page accessed October 8, 2026 |
Hagerty’s 1997 valuation page also displays a broader 12-month market summary: 367 vehicles sold and $70 million in total sales volume. That roll-up spans 1994–1998 911s and multiple variants, so it describes a broad market segment rather than the value of a standard Carrera.

Why one 993 can cost far more than another
Trim and rarity
A Carrera is not a like-for-like comparison with a Carrera S or 4S, Turbo or Turbo S, RS, or GT2. Porsche Classic says just over 5,000 993 Turbo and Turbo S cars were produced from 1995 to 1998; the lower production total helps explain why Turbo variants belong in a separate comparison from ordinary Carrera guides. Porsche Classic’s 993 model overview gives that production context. It does not establish a current price for each Turbo version.
Body style, specification and condition
Compare coupes with coupes, Cabriolets with Cabriolets, and Targas with Targas. Transmission, mileage, options, originality, modifications, documented servicing, ownership history and overall condition all affect what a particular car is worth. A guide category such as “Good” is an estimate tied to a condition description, not a promise that a specific car will sell for that amount.

Market and currency
Prices from different countries are not interchangeable. Hagerty UK’s specialist guide says Carrera 2 and Carrera 4 versions sell for much the same in its UK-market discussion. The same guide places rare Turbo Cabriolets, RSRs and GT2s in much higher UK price tiers: £500,000–£600,000 for a good-to-best Turbo Cabriolet, a GT2 starting around £750,000 and reaching £1 million for the best examples, and an approximately £25,000 RSR premium in its stated comparison. These figures come from a specialist guide published about two years before access; they are dated UK context, not current U.S. prices. Hagerty UK’s 993 buying guide is the source for those comparisons.
How to compare a 993 price with a real sale
Start with the exact car, not the generation-wide label. A guide estimate, asking price and completed auction sale answer different questions: a guide is an indicative valuation, an asking price is what a seller wants, and a completed sale records a transaction on a particular date. Even completed sales are only useful comparables when the cars are similar.

- Match the model: record year, trim and body style; separate Carrera, S/4S, Turbo/Turbo S, RS and GT2 examples.
- Match the specification: note transmission, mileage, options and any modifications or non-original parts.
- Check the evidence: look for service documentation, ownership history and a condition description; distinguish an estimate from an asking price or completed sale.
- Keep market details together: record the sale or valuation date, country, currency and source. Do not blend UK-pound guide figures with U.S.-dollar estimates.
- Assess the individual car: have its condition and records reviewed before treating a market figure as a budget for that vehicle.
What these figures do—and do not—tell you
The available U.S. examples establish a guide-level range for two Carrera Cabriolets, not a complete price list for all 993 trims. They do not establish a current value for every Turbo, RS or GT2, nor do they support calculating appreciation from original new-car prices. Treat the figures as dated reference points and verify the exact configuration and basis of any valuation or sale you use.
