A January 2025 AutoWeek report, citing a former driver representative, put the median for top-line hybrid prototype drivers at $650,000 for a full nine-race season and said GT salaries had reached the $350,000 range. Those are reported estimates for leading professionals—not an official pay scale or a typical figure for every driver on the grid.
What the reported IMSA salary figures cover
The two public benchmarks describe different groups and should not be treated as a complete salary survey. AutoWeek attributed them to a former driver who represents drivers; IMSA itself does not publish a representative salary average in the materials cited here.
| Driver category | Reported compensation | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Top-line hybrid prototype drivers | $650,000 median for a full nine-race season | AutoWeek’s January 2025 report, citing a former driver representative. This is a reported median for that elite segment, not a series-wide average. |
| GT drivers | The $350,000 range | AutoWeek’s January 2025 report says GT salaries had risen to this range. It does not define the population or provide a class-by-class breakdown. |
| Other professional drivers, part-time or event-contract drivers, amateurs, and owner-drivers | Not stated in the cited sources | The available reporting does not establish a reliable public pay scale for these groups. |
Do not read the difference between the prototype median and the GT range as a precise or universal comparison between categories. The figures have different descriptions, and the report does not isolate how contract length, manufacturer support, schedule, results, or driver role affect compensation.
Why pay varies across the IMSA grid
IMSA seats are not all the same kind of job. A leading factory-backed professional seat may come with a salary, while other arrangements may be part-time, event-based, amateur, or funded by a driver or team. The sources cited here do not quantify how common those arrangements are or what they pay.

- Amateur, owner, or funded-seat arrangements: A driver may contribute funding or participate through a team arrangement rather than receive a salary; the cited sources do not quantify these finances.
Manufacturer involvement is one reason professional opportunities have drawn attention. In the January 2025 AutoWeek report, IMSA driver Felipe Albuquerque said, “Once done, all the manufacturers have joined. They’re employing a lot of drivers, mechanics and teams. It’s a beautiful time.” That describes expanding employment opportunities; it does not mean every IMSA driver is salaried.
Are IMSA scholarships salary?
No. A scholarship can reduce racing costs, but its stated value is not a paycheck or guaranteed take-home income. IMSA’s 2026–27 Diverse Driver Development Scholarship announcement describes benefits valued at up to $300,000. The official benefit list includes a full-season premium prepaid entry fee for year one, 50 percent of an entry fee for year two, and partner-provided support. One listed item is a conditional $50,000 Skip Barber racing-program credit.

The scholarship terms distinguish those benefits from wages. Under the 2026–27 terms and conditions, recipients are not entitled to payments or benefits beyond the listed components, and accepting the award does not create an employment relationship. Drivers and teams remain responsible for uncovered expenses, including licenses, travel, vehicle costs, fuel, parts, and maintenance.
Scholarship package values can also differ by announcement and recipient. IMSA’s October 9, 2025 announcement valued Nicky Hays’s 2026–27 award benefits at up to $380,000. That is the stated value of his package, not an annual salary; it should not be combined with the program’s separate up-to-$300,000 announcement as though either were wages.

What a salary estimate can—and cannot—tell you
If you are asking what a top professional might earn, the 2025 report gives useful but limited reference points: $650,000 as the reported median for top-line hybrid prototype drivers over a full nine-race season, and GT salaries in the $350,000 range. If you are asking what an IMSA driver generally makes, the available evidence does not support a single average. It does not establish pay for every class, amateur, owner-driver, or event-only participant.
