There is no data-backed universal winner among diesel pickup engines: no standardized long-term failure-rate dataset compares every generation on equal terms. This editorial top ten weighs durability reputation—not measured failure rates—alongside factory output, design and serviceability, and influence on the pickup market. A standout engine does not guarantee an equally capable truck or transmission, and the engines below are specific versions, not blanket endorsements of every engine in a family.

For historical context, factory ratings rose sharply over the decades. They should be compared only with their model year, rating version, and configuration in view; higher output alone does not mean a better engine. The list is therefore a set of notable pickups and engines, not an objective consensus ranking.

What are the best diesel truck engines ever made?

These ten pickups represent influential diesel-engine choices across the U.S. market, from early mechanical-injection workhorses to current high-output diesels. The order is editorial, and the entries distinguish engine versions where possible. Because consistent factory ratings for every exact configuration are not established here, numerical comparisons are limited to the sourced examples below.

  1. 1989 Dodge Ram with the 5.9L Cummins 12-valve

The first Cummins-powered Ram arrived in 1989 with a 5.9-liter engine rated by Cummins at 160 horsepower. Cummins says the B-series had been designed for commercial use before it entered the pickup market, a background that helped make this pairing significant. The 12-valve version is often valued by enthusiasts for its comparatively straightforward mechanical design and serviceability; that reputation is not a measured failure-rate result. Cummins’ Ram history documents the introduction and original rating.

  2. 1994–2003 Ford pickups with the 7.3L Power Stroke

Ford identifies the 7.3L Power Stroke as a 1994–2003 model-year engine, and describes its turbocharging and direct injection as features of the generation. Ford also characterizes it as known among truck enthusiasts for reliability, durability, and towing capacity. Those are manufacturer descriptions of reputation, not independent reliability-study findings. Its long production run and strong enthusiast following make it one of the most influential modern diesel-pickup engines. Ford’s Power Stroke history and parts resource covers the engine family.

  3. Dodge Ram with the 5.9L Cummins 24-valve

The later 24-valve 5.9L carried the Cummins-Ram partnership into a more electronically managed era. It belongs on a shortlist of notable diesel pickups, but it should not be conflated with the earlier 12-valve: fuel-system design and service considerations differ by version. Factory output varied with model year and configuration, so a single rating for the whole 24-valve family would be misleading.

  4. Dodge Ram with the 5.9L Cummins common-rail

Common-rail injection marks another distinct step in the 5.9L Cummins’ evolution. It broadened the engine’s role beyond the earliest, more mechanically simple versions, but the family name does not make its systems or reputation interchangeable across generations. Buyers comparing used trucks should identify the model year and exact injection setup rather than assume every 5.9L has the same strengths.

  5. Selected Dodge/Ram pickups with the 6.7L Cummins

The 6.7L Cummins extends the B-series story into the modern heavy-duty pickup era. It is a candidate for buyers who value the Cummins-Ram lineage and a larger-displacement engine, but the 6.7L spans versions with different equipment and ratings. The available sources do not establish one figure or reliability outcome that applies to every year, so assess the exact truck and powertrain rather than treating the displacement as a guarantee.

  6. Ford pickups with the 6.9L IDI

Ford’s indirect-injection 6.9L is part of the earlier diesel-pickup generation that preceded the Power Stroke. Its place in the history reflects the transition toward diesel-powered pickups as serious work vehicles. It is a different design era from later turbocharged, direct-injection engines; claims about later engines’ output or technology should not be projected backward onto it.

  7. Ford pickups with the 7.3L IDI

The 7.3L IDI followed the 6.9L in Ford’s indirect-injection diesel lineage. It is worth distinguishing from the later 7.3L Power Stroke, despite the shared displacement: the names refer to materially different engine designs. That distinction matters both when comparing performance and when sourcing service information or replacement parts.

  8. GM pickups with the 6.2L diesel

GM’s 6.2L diesel belongs to the early diesel-pickup market alongside the Ford IDI engines. Its historical importance is clear, but the supplied sources do not provide a consistent exact-year specification or comparable reliability evidence for this entry. Treat it as a period-specific option rather than compare it numerically with today’s engines.

  9. GM pickups with the 6.5L diesel

The 6.5L developed the GM diesel-pickup story beyond the 6.2L. As with other long-lived engine families, year and configuration matter; the family label alone is not enough to infer a precise rating or shared reliability characteristics. It earns a place for its role in the market’s evolution, not on the basis of a directly comparable failure-rate record.

  10. GM pickups with the 6.6L Duramax, including LBZ and L5P generations

The 6.6L Duramax name spans multiple generations, so a strong example should be identified by its code rather than treated as representative of the entire family. The LBZ is a frequently cited candidate among enthusiasts; the later L5P illustrates how far factory output advanced. GM Powered Solutions lists the L5P at 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft, but that engine specification is not a direct, model-year-matched comparison with older pickup ratings. GM’s L5P specifications identify the engine rating.

Which diesel pickup engine lasts the longest?

No single engine can be identified as the longest-lasting from the available evidence. There is no standardized, independent long-term dataset comparing failure rates across the different engines, model years, maintenance histories, duty cycles, and transmissions. Longevity claims for the 5.9L Cummins or 7.3L Power Stroke are best understood as reputation, not a statistical result proving either one lasts longest.

For a used-truck decision, the exact engine version is only one part of the assessment. Service records, condition, previous workload, maintenance quality, and the condition of the transmission and surrounding truck can outweigh a model’s reputation.

Is a Cummins better than a Power Stroke or Duramax?

Not universally. Cummins, Power Stroke, and Duramax describe different engine lineages used in different trucks and eras; none is a single unchanging design. A mechanical 5.9L Cummins, a 7.3L Power Stroke, and an L5P Duramax differ in injection approach, age, output, and service context. Their factory ratings also come from different model years and configurations, so a raw horsepower or torque comparison can obscure more than it reveals.

  • THE PERFECT PRESENT: Don't know what to get dad for his birthday? Or maybe you have an avid hobbyist or collector in your life. This model kit makes an ideal gift for any occasion!
  • Prioritize straightforward older mechanical design: compare the specific 5.9L Cummins 12-valve and period alternatives, then verify the truck’s actual condition and service history.
  • Prioritize a strong enthusiast reputation: the 7.3L Power Stroke and 5.9L Cummins have notable followings, but reputation is not a substitute for an inspection or a failure-rate study.
  • Prioritize newer factory output: compare exact model-year versions and the complete truck powertrain, not engine-family names alone.

How much more powerful are newer diesel pickups?

The rise in output is substantial, but the figures below come from different contexts and should not be read as a controlled, like-for-like test.

Engine and context Factory rating Source and qualification
First Cummins-powered Ram, 1989-era 5.9L 160 hp Cummins’ history of its first Ram application; page accessed 2026.
Ford 6.4L Power Stroke 350 hp at 3,000 rpm; 650 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm Ford’s engine-history specifications; page accessed 2026.
GM L5P 6.6L Duramax 470 hp; 975 lb-ft GM Powered Solutions engine specification; page accessed 2026.
2026 Ford Super Duty standard-output 6.7L Power Stroke 475 hp; 1,050 lb-ft Ford’s 2026 Super Duty technical specifications, for the stated 2026 configuration.
2026 Ford Super Duty high-output 6.7L Power Stroke 500 hp; 1,200 lb-ft Ford’s 2026 Super Duty technical specifications, for the stated 2026 configuration.

These examples demonstrate changing factory output, not a ranking of engine quality. For historical comparisons, DieselHub’s power and torque reference aggregates historical ratings; check the exact model year, transmission, and output version before relying on a number.

What should you check before choosing one?

  • Confirm the engine version: displacement alone does not distinguish, for example, a 7.3L IDI from a 7.3L Power Stroke, or one Duramax generation from another.
  • Match the rating to the truck: model year, configuration, and sometimes transmission affect factory output figures.
  • Separate engine from vehicle: a notable engine can be paired with a less capable truck or transmission. Evaluate the complete powertrain and the truck’s intended use.
  • Inspect condition and records: an individual vehicle’s maintenance and workload history matter more to a purchase than a broad reputation claim.
  • Use exact-fit service information: repair manuals and parts need to match the truck’s year and engine. Ford says remanufactured 7.3L engines and parts are available through its parts dealers or distributors; availability for other combinations should be checked with the manufacturer or supplier.
