Model names can make the figures look comparable in a search result, but the body style and seating count determine what “seats up” means. A valid comparison must place a three-row Atlas beside another three-row vehicle and use each vehicle’s behind-third-row measurement.
What 583 or 600 liters means for luggage
A volume figure tells you the amount of three-dimensional space, not the exact number of suitcases that will fit. Luggage varies in width, height, wheel design and handle shape, while the Atlas cargo area has a specific floor plan and wheel-well intrusions that a single headline number does not describe.
Use the published value as a capacity range for planning, not as a promise that a certain number of bags will fit. - Keep the second- and third-row seats in their passenger positions.
- Place the largest or heaviest items low and toward the seatbacks.
- Check that the liftgate closes without compressing cargo dangerously or touching the glass.
- Confirm that the driver’s rear visibility, seat travel and access to seat-belt hardware are not obstructed.
- Secure loose items so they cannot move forward during braking; Volkswagen’s cargo guidance says to properly secure cargo and consult the owner’s manual for details.
This process gives you a vehicle-specific answer for your own bags without pretending that liters predict every packing arrangement.

How seating configuration affects the published number

How to compare the Atlas with another three-row SUV
If you are shopping between vehicles, compare like with like. A maximum-volume number with the second and third rows folded can be many times larger than the space available on a family trip with every seat occupied. Mixing those measurements creates an unusable ranking.

What to verify at a dealership
If your decision depends on a specific stroller, mobility aid, instrument case or travel set, bring the item or its measurements to the vehicle.
