Maximum capacity with both rear rows folded answers an occasional hauling question, not an everyday family-storage question.
Published examples show why the choice matters: manufacturer figures behind the third row run from 17.2 cubic feet in the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L to 25.5 cubic feet in surfaced GMC Yukon material. Those numbers are examples from different vehicles, model years and configurations, not a universal class standard. The usable answer comes from matching your real items to the exact vehicle’s floor length, width, height and liftgate opening.

Start with the cargo configuration you will actually use
Three-row SUVs usually publish several cargo figures. Each describes a different seating situation, so comparing the largest number from one vehicle with the behind-third-row number from another can produce a misleading result.

This is the decisive measurement when children or adults ride in all three rows on normal trips. It tells you what remains for groceries, backpacks, a compact stroller, personal bags or other items while every seat is available. A vehicle with a large maximum volume can still be frustrating if its all-seats-up area is shallow or narrow.

Behind the second row: third row folded
Use this figure when the third row is folded for most errands and opened only occasionally. It is often the best measure for a household with five regular occupants that needs a flexible two-row cargo bay during the week.
Maximum volume: rear rows folded
Maximum capacity is useful for furniture, building supplies, camping equipment or a major move. It does not tell you whether a week’s luggage fits with seven passengers aboard. Chevrolet’s 2026 Traverse, for example, lists 22.9 cubic feet behind the third row, 56.6 behind the second row and 98 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded flat. Those are three separate use cases.
Published cargo figures from current and recent examples
The table below gathers manufacturer figures cited for specific vehicles. Treat every value as configuration-specific. Verify the model year, trim, seat layout and measurement label before buying.

Across these examples, the behind-third-row numbers span 17.2 to 25.5 cubic feet. That spread is large enough to change what fits, but it is not a complete ranking of every three-row SUV and should not be treated as a class-wide minimum or maximum.
Turn your household load into a capacity requirement
Instead of starting with a favorite model, record what you carry on the trips that matter. Separate routine loads from rare hauling so a large maximum-volume claim does not hide a cramped daily cargo area.

Make a repeat-load inventory
- Measure the folded length, width and height of the stroller, wheelchair, walker or other mobility equipment you actually use.
- Count the number and approximate size of school, work, diaper or sports bags that travel with the usual passengers.
- Note grocery patterns: a few reusable bags, a weekly bulk shop, a cooler or a delivery-sized box create different shape requirements.
- Measure the luggage used on a normal overnight or week-long trip, including hard-sided cases that cannot be compressed.
- Identify occasional items that must fit without using a roof box, such as musical instruments, hockey bags, a pet crate or a folded wagon.
Write down the largest item in each category and the combination that occurs most often. A cargo bay that handles every item separately may fail when a stroller, groceries and two suitcases arrive together.
Choose the occupied-seat scenario
- All three rows occupied: compare only the behind-third-row volume and opening dimensions.
- Third row usually folded: compare behind-second-row volume, then confirm that the third row can be opened without unloading everything.
- Occasional maximum hauling: compare maximum volume separately and check whether the folded seats create a flat, usable floor.
This approach prevents a common mistake: selecting a vehicle because its maximum number is impressive even though the family needs storage with every seat upright.
Why cubic feet alone cannot predict fit
Cubic feet is a volume calculation, not a guarantee that a particular object will enter or rest securely. Two cargo bays with similar ratings can have very different practical capacity.
Length and floor shape
A long, low floor may accept a stroller or suitcase that cannot stand upright in a taller but shorter bay. Check the distance from the liftgate to the second-row seatbacks and note wheel-well intrusions. A sloped seatback or raised load floor can consume usable length even when the published volume looks generous.
Width between the wheel wells
Manufacturers may measure around irregular corners, while your cooler or pet crate needs a continuous rectangle. Measure the narrowest point between the wheel wells and the width at the liftgate opening, not just the widest interior point.

Height and liftgate opening
A tall box can be blocked by the roofline or the opening’s upper edge before it reaches the floor. Measure both the opening height and the interior height, and account for a power liftgate’s closing path. A cargo cover, third-row headrests and seat-belt hardware can also reduce the clear opening.

Folded seats may leave a step, gap or slope. That can matter more than several additional cubic feet when loading a wheeled item or sliding heavy luggage. Check whether the second-row seat slides, tilts or splits, and whether one section can be folded while preserving a passenger seat.
Seat count and layout can change the answer
Three-row SUVs do not all provide the same number of seats. Chevrolet describes the 2026 Traverse as seating up to eight with an available second-row bench on LT, while other named trims are described as seven-seat configurations. A second-row bench, captain’s chairs, removable center sections and power-folding mechanisms each change both passenger flexibility and the shape of the cargo pass-through.
Ask the dealer to demonstrate the exact configuration you would register, not a nearby trim. Confirm whether the third row is split-folding, whether the second row must be moved to access it, and whether a child seat installed in the second row prevents the seat from sliding or folding. If you carry six or seven people, count every seat that must remain usable during the test fit.
How to test-fit a candidate SUV
A test drive should include a cargo test. Bring a tape measure and, if possible, the largest real items you carry. Do not rely on an empty showroom bay.

- Set the seats first. Place the second- and third-row seats in the positions used by your passengers. Recline them as you would on a trip.
- Measure the opening. Record liftgate height and width, the narrowest width between wheel wells, and floor length to the seatback.
- Load the awkward item. Try the stroller, crate, folded wagon, mobility device or instrument case that is hardest to fit. Test both upright and folded orientations.
- Add the routine items. Place the usual bags, cooler or groceries around the bulky item. Check whether soft bags can be secured without covering the rear view.
- Open every seat you need. Fold and restore the third row, then repeat with a child seat or passenger seated in the second row if that is your real arrangement.
- Check the closure and visibility. Make sure the liftgate closes without contact, the cargo cover fits, and the driver retains adequate rearward visibility or has a clear camera view.
Photograph the loaded arrangement and record the measurements. That gives you a repeatable comparison when visiting another dealer.

Look for four details beside every number: model year, trim, seat configuration and measurement position. Honda’s 2026 Pilot information lists 18.6 cubic feet as standard behind the third row and maxima up to 22.4 cubic feet depending on trim or configuration; quoting only the larger value can overstate what a base vehicle offers.
Kia’s 2026 manual labels its luggage volume as SAE and defines minimum as the area behind the third row and maximum as the area behind the front seat to the roof. Its table gives 20.23 cubic feet (573 liters) minimum and 81.72 cubic feet (2,314 liters) maximum. Because manufacturers may use different procedures, a Kia SAE figure should not automatically be treated as directly measured on the same basis as every other brand’s marketing number.
The Lexus TX figures come from a June 8, 2023 announcement, and the GMC Acadia figures come from a page concerning 2025 model information. They remain useful reference points, but neither establishes what every later model year or trim includes. The surfaced GMC Yukon figure of 25.5 cubic feet lacks a clear model year and precise trim, so verify it on the vehicle’s current specification sheet.

Match capacity to common household scenarios
Daily school and work use
If all three rows are occupied, prioritize the behind-third-row opening and the ability to stack soft bags safely. A modest published volume can work when loads are compressible; it may fail when each passenger carries a rigid case or instrument.

Airport and holiday trips
Count the number of hard-sided suitcases and measure their height. Compare that stack with the actual floor length and liftgate opening. If luggage only fits with the third row folded, the SUV does not meet an all-seats-up travel requirement.
Sports and outdoor equipment
Length and diagonal clearance usually matter more than total volume. Measure the longest bat bag, hockey bag, stroller wagon, skis or camping item, then check whether it can be loaded without blocking a passenger seat.
Mobility equipment or a pet crate
These loads often require a continuous rectangle and a low loading lip. Test the exact folded wheelchair, walker or crate, and verify that the liftgate opening is wide enough to avoid twisting or lifting at an unsafe angle.
Occasional home-improvement hauling
If this is infrequent, compare maximum capacity after confirming that the second- and third-row seats fold as advertised and leave a floor suitable for your materials. Do not sacrifice everyday third-row usability solely for a maximum figure you use a few times per year.
A practical decision rule
- Keep a model on the list only if its behind-third-row layout accepts your largest routine load with the required passengers seated.
- If the third row is normally folded, make behind-second-row capacity and seat-access mechanics the primary comparison.
- Use maximum volume as a tie-breaker for occasional hauling, not as a substitute for all-seats-up fit.
- When two vehicles publish similar cubic-foot figures, choose based on measured opening dimensions, floor shape, seat flexibility and how securely your items can be restrained.
- Recheck the specification for the exact model year and trim immediately before signing, because manufacturer pages and available configurations can change.
Loading and safety checks
Keep the driver’s view, rear lighting and emergency-access paths clear. Heavy items belong low and as far forward as practical, with cargo nets, tie-downs or other built-in restraints used where provided. Do not stack bags above the seatback unless the vehicle’s restraint system and cargo cover are designed for that arrangement. Secure pet crates and mobility equipment so they cannot become projectiles during hard braking.
Finally, leave room for passengers to enter and exit without moving a loaded object. A technically sufficient volume is not sufficient if accessing the third row requires unloading the entire bay.
Bottom line
Choose cargo space by configuration and fit, not by the biggest number in a brochure. For three-row travel, compare the exact behind-third-row area first; for two-row use, compare behind-second-row space; for rare hauling, evaluate maximum volume separately. The published examples range from 17.2 to 25.5 cubic feet behind the third row, but your measured stroller, luggage, bags or equipment—and the seats that must remain occupied—determine how much you actually need.
