That puts the Armada’s published maximum 2,500 pounds higher. These are manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee that every vehicle can tow that much once passengers, cargo, trailer tongue weight, and equipment are accounted for.

What the 2,500-pound difference means
The 2,500 lb figure is the arithmetic difference between the manufacturers’ published maximums: 8,500 lb for the Armada and 6,000 lb for the Land Cruiser. It does not establish that a particular loaded Armada can tow 2,500 lb more than a particular Land Cruiser. The usable limit is the lowest applicable rating for the vehicle, trailer, hitch, and combination, after accounting for how the vehicle is loaded.
For the Land Cruiser, Toyota expressly says passengers, cargo, optional equipment, and tongue weight count against vehicle and combination limits. The same practical check applies when preparing either SUV: confirm the specific vehicle’s certification labels and owner’s manual rather than relying on a model-line headline maximum.

How to check the limit for your actual setup
- Identify the exact vehicle. Use the owner’s manual and certification labels for the model year and configuration being towed with. The figures above refer to U.S. 2025–2026 materials.
- Check all weight ratings. Compare the loaded vehicle and trailer against the vehicle’s GVWR, front and rear GAWR, GCWR, maximum trailer rating, and the hitch and receiver ratings. Do not exceed the lowest applicable limit.
- Include the load and tongue weight. Occupants, cargo, options, and trailer tongue load add weight to the vehicle. Nissan lists an 850 lb maximum tongue capacity in the cited 2025 and 2026 lineup information; that figure does not replace the specific vehicle’s other limits.
- Use the required towing equipment. Toyota requires a sufficiently rated sway-control device when gross trailer weight exceeds 2,000 lb, and a sufficiently rated weight-distributing hitch above 5,000 lb. Its manual recommends tongue weight of 9%–11% of gross trailer weight. Verify the requirements for the exact vehicle and hitch.
- Confirm braking and operating limits. Toyota requires trailer service brakes when trailer weight exceeds the vehicle’s unbraked rating and recommends compliant trailer brakes. Its manual recommends a maximum vehicle-trailer speed of 65 mph on a flat, straight, dry road, subject to lower posted limits or the trailer manual. Follow the Nissan manual and applicable laws for an Armada.
Which SUV is the better fit for towing?
On published maximum trailer capacity alone, the Armada PRO-4X has the higher rating: 8,500 lb versus the Land Cruiser’s 6,000 lb. That difference may matter if a trailer’s loaded weight is above the Toyota’s maximum and within the Armada’s applicable limits. For a trailer within both vehicles’ limits, compare the specific vehicle’s payload remaining after passengers and cargo, tongue-weight capacity, hitch setup, and other ratings before choosing.
Neither headline figure is permission to tow to that weight regardless of loading. The vehicle’s actual labels, manual, hitch rating, and trailer weight determine whether a particular combination is within limits.
