The Honda Prelude suits drivers who want a more efficient, comfortable coupe with useful hatchback cargo space and modern connectivity. This comparison covers U.S. 2026 models; equipment and availability can differ elsewhere.
How the Prelude and GR86 differ
These coupes take different approaches to everyday sportiness. Honda pairs a front-wheel-drive hybrid system with comfort and utility. Toyota builds the GR86 around a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer engine, rear-wheel drive and the option of a manual transmission.

Which car is more engaging to drive?
Toyota GR86: a stronger match for hands-on driving
The GR86 offers the classic sports-coupe combination of rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual. In Edmunds’ comparison, reviewers praised its steering feel and balance and judged it more engaging than the Prelude. In that particular test, the manual GR86 reached 60 mph in 6.0 seconds, compared with 7.2 seconds for the Prelude. Those are test results, not manufacturer ratings or a guarantee for every car and condition.

Honda Prelude: hybrid power with selectable character
The Prelude makes 200 hp in total system output and uses a direct-drive unit rather than a conventional manual. Honda provides Comfort, GT, Sport and Individual drive modes, plus S+ Shift paddle controls. Its equipment also includes adaptive dampers and Brembo four-piston front calipers. These features broaden its driving modes, but they do not give it the GR86’s rear-wheel-drive layout or manual-transmission option.
Which is better for daily driving?
The Prelude has the clearer everyday-comfort and convenience case. Honda lists heated front seats, leather-trimmed front sport seats, Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless Qi charger and Honda Sensing driver-assistance features. Edmunds also found the Prelude more comfortable in its comparison. These are U.S.-model features; check the specific vehicle’s equipment before buying.

Fuel economy: the Prelude has the advantage
Honda’s U.S. comparison lists EPA ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 highway and 44 combined for the 2026 Prelude. It lists 21/30/25 mpg for the 2026 GR86 automatic; that figure should not be applied to the manual. EPA estimates are not promises of real-world results, which vary with traffic, weather, route and driving style.
