Current 2026 midsize pickups advertise maximum towing capacities of roughly 6,500 to 7,700 pounds. Chevrolet lists up to 7,700 pounds for Colorado, Ford up to 7,500 pounds for qualifying Ranger configurations, Nissan up to 6,680 pounds for the shown Crew Cab PRO-4X, and Toyota up to 6,500 pounds for Tacoma. Those are configuration-specific ceilings, not a universal allowance for every truck. Your usable limit is whichever constraint is reached first among trailer rating, payload, tongue weight, GVWR, GCWR, axle ratings, hitch limits, and equipment requirements.
Published 2026 towing capacities
The figures below are the highest values stated in the manufacturers’ 2026 materials. They describe particular engines, drivetrains, trims, packages, or cab-and-bed combinations where noted. A base truck from the same model line may have a lower rating.

Do not rank trucks solely by the largest number in this table. A rating can change with engine, axle ratio, four-wheel drive, cab and bed length, trim, tires, cooling hardware, hitch, and factory tow package. The vehicle-identification label, owner’s manual, and vehicle-specific towing chart are the authority for the truck you actually own.

Configuration and factory equipment
Manufacturers calculate a maximum for a defined combination of hardware and test conditions. Ford’s 2026 Ranger guide separates ratings by engine and configuration. For non-Raptor Rangers, the guide requires the Trailer Tow Package for trailers above 3,500 pounds and says bumper-only towing must not exceed 3,500 pounds. A truck without the required package cannot use the higher figure simply because another Ranger version can.

Read the model-year guide for your region and production configuration rather than relying on a dealer listing or a number from a different year. Two trucks with the same badge can have different axle, cooling, hitch, or brake-controller equipment and therefore different limits.
Payload is consumed before the trailer moves
Payload is the allowable combined weight of people and cargo carried by the truck. Passengers, luggage, bed cargo, a tonneau or camper, toolboxes, steps, winches, aftermarket bumpers, and other accessories all use that allowance. The trailer’s tongue load is also carried by the truck, so it reduces the payload left for occupants and cargo.
Toyota specifically warns that optional equipment, passengers, and cargo reduce trailer capacity so the combination stays within GCWR, GVWR, and GAWR. This is why a truck can be below its headline trailer rating yet still be overloaded at the rear axle or at the truck’s GVWR.

Tongue weight and the hitch
For conventional ball-hitch towing, Ford says loaded tongue weight is generally about 10–15% of the loaded trailer weight, subject to the vehicle and hitch limits. A 6,000-pound loaded trailer therefore places approximately 600–900 pounds on the truck before passengers or bed cargo are counted. That is an illustration of the percentage, not a promise that every truck can carry that load.
Use the loaded trailer, not an empty-trailer brochure weight, when determining tongue weight. Water, fuel, propane, batteries, food, tools, and personal gear can materially change it. The receiver, ball mount, ball, and any weight-distributing hardware each have ratings; the lowest applicable rating controls. A tongue-weight scale can measure the actual load, but measuring equipment does not increase the truck’s capacity.
How the weight limits fit together
| Limit | What it controls | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum loaded trailer weight | The trailer’s total loaded weight allowed for that specific vehicle and configuration. | Use the exact engine, drivetrain, axle, cab, bed, trim, and tow-package entry in the manufacturer’s guide. |
| Payload | The combined weight of occupants and everything carried by the truck, including trailer tongue load. | Compare actual loaded truck weight with the door-label payload or GVWR after accessories and passengers are aboard. |
| GVWR | Gross Vehicle Weight Rating: the maximum loaded weight of the tow vehicle itself. | Check the driver-door certification label and a scale reading of the loaded truck. |
| GAWR | Gross Axle Weight Rating: the maximum load on each axle, front and rear. | Make sure neither axle exceeds its separate rating; a total under GVWR can still overload one axle. |
| GCWR | Gross Combined Weight Rating: the maximum loaded truck-plus-trailer combination. | Add the actual loaded truck and actual loaded trailer. Ford states, “Combined weight of vehicle and trailer cannot exceed listed GCWR.” |
| Hitch and receiver rating | The load the installed receiver and hitch arrangement can safely carry. | Check both maximum trailer weight and maximum tongue weight, including any weight-distribution condition. |
These limits apply simultaneously. A tow rating does not override GVWR, either GAWR, GCWR, or the receiver rating. Ford’s guide also states, “Do not exceed the Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight listed.”

Trailer loading, balance, and frontal area
Load for a stable tongue weight
Place heavy items low and close to the trailer’s axle group, secure them against movement, and distribute cargo so the loaded tongue weight remains within the manufacturer’s stated range. Moving equipment toward the rear can reduce tongue load but may make the trailer sway; moving everything forward can overload the hitch or rear axle. Recheck the trailer after adding water, fuel, or supplies.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAccount for the trailer’s shape
A tall, wide trailer creates more aerodynamic resistance than a low utility trailer of the same weight. Ford’s Ranger guide limits trailer frontal area to 30 square feet without the Trailer Tow Package and 55 square feet with the package. The guide warns that exceeding the applicable area may significantly reduce performance. Treat this as a separate requirement from weight: a trailer can be under the pound limit yet exceed the allowed frontal area.
How to verify a specific truck and trailer
- Identify the truck precisely. Record model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, axle ratio, cab, bed, and factory tow package. Use the owner’s manual and vehicle-specific towing chart or a VIN-based lookup. Do not apply a marketing maximum from a different configuration.
- Read the certification label. The driver-door label lists GVWR and front and rear GAWR. Note the truck’s actual empty weight and available payload, then account for every occupant, accessory, tool, and item in the bed.
- Load the trailer as it will travel. Include water, fuel, propane, batteries, food, sporting equipment, and supplies. Determine the actual gross trailer weight and loaded tongue weight. For conventional towing, Ford’s 10–15% guideline is a starting point; the vehicle and hitch limits govern.
- Measure when the numbers are uncertain. Use a public scale or qualified weighing service for the truck and trailer, and a suitable tongue-weight scale for the coupler load. Weighing is especially important for enclosed trailers, campers, and trailers whose contents change between trips.
- Check the combination. Confirm that loaded truck weight is below GVWR, each axle is below its GAWR, and loaded truck plus loaded trailer is below GCWR. Also compare the trailer with the vehicle’s maximum loaded trailer weight.
- Check the hardware and conditions. Verify receiver and ball-mount ratings, required tow equipment, brake-controller compatibility, weight-distribution requirements, and any frontal-area limit. Correct a failing condition before towing; do not compensate by relying on an empty-trailer weight.
Worked capacity example
Suppose a trailer weighs 6,000 pounds when loaded for a trip. A 10–15% conventional-towing tongue load is 600–900 pounds. If the truck has 1,220 pounds of payload, the tongue would leave 320–620 pounds for occupants, bed cargo, and accessories, before considering the truck’s actual axle distribution. That 1,220-pound figure is the payload Nissan publishes for the shown Crew Cab PRO-4X; it is not a payload value for every Frontier.

If the occupants and gear weigh 500 pounds, the example truck would have 700 pounds of payload consumed before any tongue load. A 900-pound tongue load would then exceed that illustrative payload allowance even though the trailer weighs less than 6,680 pounds. The arithmetic demonstrates why trailer rating alone cannot approve a setup; substitute the actual door-label rating and scale readings for a real decision.

Trailer Tow Package
On the 2026 non-Raptor Ranger, Ford requires the Trailer Tow Package for trailers over 3,500 pounds and limits bumper-only towing to 3,500 pounds. The package may also determine available receiver hardware, cooling, wiring, and brake-controller provisions. Confirm what is installed rather than assuming a factory-looking receiver means the full package is present.

Weight-distributing hitch
Toyota’s 2026 Tacoma owner manual says a sufficiently rated weight-distributing hitch is required above 5,000 pounds of gross trailer weight. “Sufficiently rated” means the hitch must match the actual trailer and truck limits; it is not permission to exceed them. Follow the manual’s setup instructions for spring-bar rating, ball height, and adjustment.

Brake controller and trailer brakes
Ford lists brake controllers as equipment included in some towing packages. Whether a controller is required depends on the truck, trailer, and applicable rules, so verify the exact combination and install compatible equipment before travel. A controller improves controllability only when correctly matched and adjusted; it does not raise GCWR, GVWR, GAWR, or payload.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using the biggest number in a brochure: Find the exact configuration in the model-year guide and manual.
- Counting only the trailer’s empty weight: Weigh it with water, fuel, batteries, cargo, and supplies aboard.
- Ignoring tongue load: Subtract the measured coupler load from available payload before adding passengers or bed cargo.
- Checking only total weight: Verify GCWR, GVWR, front GAWR, rear GAWR, and hitch ratings separately.
- Relying on bumper capacity: For the Ranger, bumper-only towing is limited to 3,500 pounds; use the specified tow package for higher-rated configurations.
- Overlooking trailer shape: Compare frontal area with the applicable 30- or 55-square-foot Ranger limit.
- Assuming a hitch makes an overloaded setup legal: A weight-distributing hitch can manage load transfer when required, but it cannot increase the truck’s certified ratings.
- Skipping a scale: If the loaded weights are uncertain, weigh the complete combination before a long trip.
What number should you use?
Start with the exact truck’s manufacturer chart, then reduce the theoretical trailer maximum as payload, tongue load, axle loading, hitch limits, frontal area, and equipment conditions require. The practical capacity is the largest loaded trailer that keeps every applicable value within its rating at the same time. For a purchase, compare the complete configuration and the trailer you intend to carry—not just the model name or the highest advertised tow figure.
