There is no universal litre target for a family SUV. The right boot is large enough for your household’s passengers and largest regular loads in the seat configuration you actually use. Measure your pushchair, sports equipment, shopping and holiday luggage, then check the exact vehicle’s usable dimensions and seat-up capacity—not only its maximum folded-seat figure.
Start with the space your family really uses
A boot figure only answers the question you ask it. A five-seat SUV’s capacity with the rear bench upright describes everyday family use; its maximum volume with the seats folded describes a different job. Likewise, a seven-seater may look spacious on paper but leave very little luggage room when all three rows carry passengers.

List passengers before litres
Write down the people who must travel on a normal school run, a weekend trip and a holiday. Include child seats, booster seats and any adult who regularly uses the second row. If all seven seats are occupied, the relevant number is the boot volume with all seven seats in place. A figure achieved by folding the third row cannot substitute for that.

Measure the awkward items
Measure the pushchair when folded, the longest sports bag, musical instrument, wheelchair, travel cot, dog crate or other item that goes on most trips. Record length, width and height, including wheels, handles and hard cases. A boot can have an impressive litre rating yet fail because its opening is too narrow or its roofline slopes before the item reaches the back.

Separate daily and occasional loads
Decide whether occasional bulky loads justify compromises every day. If a roof box, trailer or a second vehicle can cover an annual holiday, you may prefer a more manageable boot for school and shopping. If bulky equipment travels every week, treat it as a permanent requirement and test it before choosing a model.
What “litres” means—and what it does not
Seat-up and seat-folded figures are separate measurements
Manufacturers commonly publish a normal, seats-up volume and a maximum, seats-folded volume. Compare like with like: five-seat seats-up against five-seat seats-up, or all-rows-in-use against all-rows-in-use. Do not use a maximum figure to decide whether your pushchair fits while children occupy the rear seats.
VDA blocks are a measurement convention
Dacia explains that its VDA method fills the luggage area with standard blocks measuring 200 × 100 × 50 millimetres. Each block equals 1 dm³. Its Duster table reports both dm³ VDA and litres, with values dependent on powertrain and equipment. Read the heading and footnotes for the exact version before comparing it with another manufacturer’s unqualified litre figure.
Suitcase equivalents are illustrations
Škoda UK illustrates selected capacities using large suitcases: six for the Enyaq’s seats-up volume and five for the Karoq’s. That helps visualize the manufacturer’s own figures, but suitcase sizes are not standardized. Your cases, soft bags and child equipment may occupy space differently.

Official figures show why one family-SUV threshold does not exist
The following numbers come from manufacturer pages or specifications. They are not a controlled cross-brand test: markets, trims, powertrains, seat positions, included equipment and measurement methods differ. The cited pages did not state a publication year unless noted.

The spread is the important point. A Duster’s stated capacity changes with its powertrain and equipment; the Ariya’s range changes by grade; and the Kodiaq example has only 270 litres when all rows are available for passengers, despite 765 litres after the third row is folded. None establishes a minimum suitable for every family.
Seven-seat SUVs need a separate luggage question
Ask for the all-rows-in-use number
Sales listings often emphasize the larger volume available with the third row down. Ask the salesperson or manufacturer for the figure with the third row occupied, and confirm whether it is measured to the roof or to the parcel cover. The Kodiaq example above demonstrates why this distinction matters: 270 litres and 765 litres describe two different seating plans.

Check access to the remaining space
With the third row raised, inspect the opening, floor length and height under the cover. Some vehicles leave a tall but shallow compartment; others provide a narrow slot behind the seatbacks. Put your actual bags there rather than relying on the headline number.

Decide how often the third row is needed
If the extra seats are occasional, a smaller all-rows-in-use boot may be acceptable when you can fold the row for most journeys. If grandparents, friends or several children use those seats every week, treat the reduced luggage area as your everyday specification.
Physical dimensions can matter more than the volume
Measure the opening and floor
Check tailgate opening width, height and shape; the narrowest point between trim panels; floor length from the seatbacks to the hatch; and usable height below the parcel cover. Nissan publishes selected luggage dimensions for the Ariya, while Dacia publishes model-specific capacity information. Use those dimensions to test the item that is hardest to fit.
Inspect the loading sill
A high sill forces you to lift heavy shopping or a folded pushchair farther. A step between the bumper and floor can prevent a long item sliding in. Look for a level or adjustable floor, tie-down points and whether the rear seats fold flat enough for your equipment.

Ask what is under the floor and whether the quoted capacity includes that area. A spare wheel, tyre-inflation kit, charging equipment or removable luggage board can change the usable shape. Dacia’s figures distinguish equipment such as a tyre-inflation kit; that is a reminder to verify the exact car, not just the model name.

Use the cover as a safety boundary
For everyday driving, count the space below the parcel shelf or retractable cover, not the entire roof-to-floor cavity. Loading above the cover can obstruct rear visibility and allow objects to move forward in a collision. If you need roof-height loading, check the manufacturer’s guidance and secure the cargo properly.
How to test a shortlisted SUV
- Bring the real equipment. Take the folded pushchair, one or two typical suitcases, a sports bag and any child-seat accessories that normally travel with you.
- Set the seats correctly. Install the child seats, place passengers or equivalent weights in the rows you need, and leave the third row raised if that is normal for your family.
- Load the largest item first. Try the pushchair or longest case through the narrowest part of the opening. Do not remove the parcel cover unless you would routinely drive without it.
- Close the tailgate without force. Check that the item does not press against the glass, trim or seatbacks and that the cover retracts or sits in its normal position.
- Use the remaining space. Add shopping bags or smaller luggage around the bulky item. Look for wasted side pockets, wheel-arch intrusion and gaps that prevent a second case fitting.
- Test passenger access. In a seven-seater, climb into the third row with the boot loaded. Confirm that seat-folding mechanisms, access straps and head restraints still work.
- Check unloading. Lift the heaviest item over the sill, open the floor compartments and remove the cover. A boot that fits on paper may be impractical when fully loaded.
Compare family SUVs on these five axes

Practical capacity targets by family situation
These are decision scenarios, not universal litre recommendations. Match them to your measured loads.
One child and a compact pushchair
Prioritize the opening height, floor length and a flat area below the cover. A pushchair that fits only diagonally may prevent shopping bags or a second small case from sitting beside it. Test it with the child seat installed, because the passenger compartment—not the boot alone—determines whether the rear bench must slide or fold.
Two children with daily school equipment
Look for a squared-off floor, side cubbies and a cover that does not consume vertical space. Sports bags and scooters often use more awkward volume than their weight suggests. Confirm that both bags can be removed without unloading the pushchair or groceries.

Frequent holidays or outdoor equipment
Measure the combined length of cases, travel cot, cooler and sports gear. Compare the seats-up figure first, then evaluate whether a split-fold rear bench preserves one or more passenger places. A large maximum figure is useful only if the necessary seats can be folded for that trip.
Regular use of all seven seats
Base the decision on the all-rows-in-use boot. If that compartment cannot hold the family’s minimum luggage, the SUV is not large enough for that use without external carrying equipment or a different seating plan. Do not count the volume gained by folding the third row unless those seats are genuinely optional.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by the biggest number: Maximum folded-seat capacity says nothing about a full passenger load. Record both figures and label the seating configuration.
- Mixing markets and trims: A UK grade, a Middle East specification and a different powertrain may have different seats, equipment or dimensions. Compare exact versions.
- Treating dm³ and litres as automatically identical: Read whether the figure is VDA-measured, rounded, or presented with equipment included or excluded.
- Ignoring the parcel cover: Count protected, below-cover space for normal driving and check whether the cover can be stored when you need extra height.
- Forgetting the loading sill: A heavy pushchair may technically fit but still be difficult to lift over a high edge.
- Relying on suitcase illustrations: Manufacturer suitcase equivalents are visual aids, not a common luggage standard.
- Assuming an organizer creates capacity: A boot organizer can contain loose items, but it does not increase rated volume and may block underfloor access. Verify its fit and anchor points.
A purchase checklist
- Write the minimum passenger configuration for weekdays, weekends and holidays.
- Measure the largest item that travels regularly, including its folded shape.
- Obtain the exact seats-up figure for the chosen trim and powertrain.
- For a seven-seater, obtain the figure with all rows occupied.
- Read the manufacturer’s measurement notes, including VDA, dm³, litres and equipment assumptions.
- Check opening width, floor length, height below the cover, sill height and underfloor storage.
- Load-test the vehicle with your own pushchair, cases and child seats before ordering.
- Recheck the specification for the market and model year you will actually buy; manufacturer figures can change.
The decision rule
Choose the smallest SUV that passes your real-world test with every required passenger seated, the largest regular item loaded below the cover and enough room for the remaining bags. Use published litres to create a shortlist, not to make the final decision. When a seven-seater’s all-rows-in-use space is insufficient, folding the third row only solves the problem if you can give up those seats on that journey.
