Motorcycle automated clutches use sensors, an electronic control unit and an actuator to engage and release the clutch at the right moment. They can prevent stalls, smooth launches and reduce lever work, but they do not take over braking, throttle control or balance. Honda E-Clutch automates clutch operation while retaining a conventional gearbox, foot shifter and clutch lever. Yamaha Y-AMT automates both clutch and gear changes, using handlebar controls in manual mode or software-selected gears in automatic mode.
What an automated motorcycle clutch actually does
A clutch separates the engine from the transmission so the motorcycle can start from rest, stop without stalling and change gear. On a conventional motorcycle, the rider performs that job with a hand lever. An automated clutch replaces some or all of that hand movement with an electronically controlled actuator.

The system does not create propulsion by itself. The rider still opens the throttle, steers, balances the motorcycle and applies the brakes. Depending on the design, the rider may also select gears manually. “Automatic clutch” therefore does not always mean “fully automatic motorcycle.” It describes how clutch engagement is controlled.
The basic control loop
- Sensors report conditions such as engine speed, throttle opening, selected gear, wheel speed and the rider’s shift request.
- An engine-control computer evaluates those inputs against programmed clutch maps.
- A motor-control unit commands a compact actuator to move the clutch mechanism.
- The actuator meters clutch engagement rather than simply switching it on or off. That allows a controlled friction point during launch, shifts and low-speed manoeuvres.
Because the computer can make small, rapid corrections, it can hold the clutch at the engagement point more consistently than a tired or hurried rider in stop-and-go traffic. The exact timing, amount of slip and intervention limits are specific to the motorcycle’s calibration.

How Honda E-Clutch works
Honda E-Clutch is an electronic clutch-control system fitted to a motorcycle that still has a conventional manual transmission. The foot-operated gear selector remains, and the clutch lever remains available to the rider. The electronics normally handle clutch movement, while the rider continues to choose gears with the foot shifter.
Inputs used by the system
Honda describes E-Clutch control using engine rpm, throttle angle, gear position, shift-pedal load, clutch-disengagement status and front- and rear-wheel speed. These signals let the control unit distinguish a launch from a gear change, a normal stop from a low-speed crawl and a deliberate rider shift from an accidental pedal movement.
The engine ECU and a motor-control unit then command a compact actuator. During a start, the actuator allows enough slip to transfer drive smoothly as the rider opens the throttle. During a shift, it unloads the transmission, coordinates clutch movement with the rider’s gear change and then reapplies drive. Near a stop, it can disengage the clutch to prevent the engine from being dragged below its stable idle speed.

The E-Clutch lever is mechanically available. You can use it when you want a conventional clutch input, and Honda describes the system as switchable so the rider can turn automatic clutch control off. That makes the system a transition between a standard manual motorcycle and a clutch-assisted one rather than a one-way commitment to automation.
Honda markets E-Clutch for easier pull-aways, hill starts and traffic riding, with reduced risk of stalling. The benefit comes from the actuator managing the friction point; it is not evidence that every E-Clutch model has a separate automatic hill-hold brake.

How Yamaha Y-AMT works
Yamaha Y-AMT goes further by automating both clutch operation and gear selection. The system uses actuators for the clutch and shift mechanism, so the Y-AMT configuration described by Yamaha has no clutch lever and no conventional foot shift pedal.
Two ways to select gears
- Manual mode: the rider requests upshifts and downshifts with handlebar controls while the system operates the clutch and completes the shift.
- Automatic mode: software chooses shift timing and operates both the clutch and gearbox according to the selected riding strategy and current conditions.
Yamaha’s design goal is to retain the direct drive feel associated with a manual transmission while reducing shift shock and removing routine clutch and foot-shift effort. Since software decides more of the drivetrain timing in automatic mode, the resulting shift points and clutch feel depend heavily on the model’s calibration.

An automated clutch does not apply the motorcycle’s brakes or shorten stopping distance by itself. You still use the front and rear brakes with the technique specified in the owner’s manual, maintain a safe following distance and manage weight transfer through the chassis.
Honda describes E-Clutch as allowing the rider to concentrate on throttle, brake and gear-shifting operations. Yamaha describes Y-AMT as freeing attention for braking, cornering and accelerating. Those statements describe reduced hand and foot workload, not an autonomous braking function.
Approaching a stop
On a manual motorcycle, you normally close the throttle, apply the brakes, downshift as appropriate and pull the clutch before the engine reaches an unstable speed. With E-Clutch, the system can manage clutch disengagement while you brake, although you can still use the lever. With Y-AMT, the software handles clutch operation and either performs the downshifts in automatic mode or carries out your handlebar requests in manual mode.

Emergency braking
Use the same progressive, controlled front-brake and rear-brake inputs recommended for the motorcycle without an automated clutch. If the system is in a mode that leaves gear selection to software, concentrate on stabilising the motorcycle and stopping; do not add frantic shift commands unless the owner’s manual specifically calls for them.
Hill starts: easier launches, not automatic hill hold
The main hill-start advantage is that the system meters clutch engagement while you add throttle. You do not need to locate and hold a manual friction point with your left hand. That reduces the chance of releasing the clutch too quickly and stalling.
Starting uphill with Honda E-Clutch
- Stop with the motorcycle pointed in the intended direction and keep the front brake applied.
- Select first gear with the foot shifter if it is not already selected.
- Release the brake as you begin to add steady throttle, using the motorcycle’s normal launch technique.
- Allow E-Clutch to meter engagement; avoid abrupt throttle changes while the motorcycle takes up drive.
- If you want direct clutch control, use the clutch lever or switch the system to its available manual setting according to the owner’s manual.
Starting uphill with Yamaha Y-AMT
- Hold the motorcycle with the brake and select the appropriate starting mode or gear strategy.
- Apply smooth throttle while releasing the brake in a controlled manner.
- Let the actuators manage clutch engagement and, in automatic mode, gear selection.
- Keep your feet and eyes focused on balance and the path ahead rather than searching for a friction point or shift pedal.
Neither description proves that every model includes a separate hill-hold brake. On a steep slope, the motorcycle can still roll if the brake is released before enough drive is available. Slope control remains a rider task unless the specific model’s manual documents a dedicated hold function.
Engine braking is still available—but gear choice matters
Engine braking occurs when the driven wheel remains connected through an engaged gear while the throttle is closed. The engine’s resistance slows the motorcycle. If the clutch is disengaged, that connection is interrupted and engine braking is reduced or absent.

Honda E-Clutch
E-Clutch retains the conventional manual gearbox and foot shifter. You can select a lower gear for stronger engine braking, remain in a higher gear for a gentler response or use the clutch lever when you want to disconnect the engine. The system does not remove your ability to choose the relationship between road speed and engine speed.
Yamaha Y-AMT
In manual mode, you request the lower gear from the handlebar control and can plan engine-braking response much as you would on a manual motorcycle. In automatic mode, the control software chooses when to downshift. Engine-braking strength and timing therefore depend on the gear the software selects, the throttle position, the riding mode and the model’s calibration.
There is no single engine-braking curve that applies to every automated-clutch motorcycle. Tire grip, road gradient, engine speed, final-drive gearing and electronic strategy all affect the sensation. Treat engine braking as one part of speed control, never as a substitute for the service brakes.
Honda E-Clutch versus Yamaha Y-AMT
| Feature | Honda E-Clutch | Yamaha Y-AMT |
|---|---|---|
| What is automated | Clutch operation | Clutch and gearshift operation |
| Gear control | Foot shift pedal remains | Handlebar manual mode or automatic mode |
| Clutch lever | Retained for rider input or override | Removed in the Y-AMT configuration described by Yamaha |
| Hill-start benefit | Honda explicitly promotes easier hill starts and stall prevention | Automated starts are easier; hill-hold behaviour is model-specific |
| Engine-braking control | Rider can downshift with the normal foot shifter | Depends on manual or automatic mode and the software-selected gear |
How to adapt your riding technique
Launching in traffic
Use smooth throttle rather than treating the system like an on/off switch. Automated control reduces the need to feather a lever, but abrupt throttle still produces abrupt acceleration. Leave a gap ahead so you can roll forward without repeated hard starts and stops.

Low-speed manoeuvres
Keep your eyes up, use gentle steering inputs and control speed primarily with the brakes and throttle. Do not drag the clutch lever on an E-Clutch motorcycle unless you understand how that input changes the system’s automatic strategy. On Y-AMT, learn the response of the selected mode in an empty area before attempting tight U-turns on a slope.

Downshifting for a corner
Choose the gear before turn-in when possible. With E-Clutch, use the foot shifter and allow the system to coordinate the clutch, or use the lever for a deliberate manual shift. With Y-AMT manual mode, request the downshift early enough for the actuator to complete it before maximum lean. In automatic mode, anticipate that the software may hold a gear or downshift according to its programmed priorities rather than your preferred timing.
What happens if the electronics are switched off or unavailable?
E-Clutch’s retained lever and conventional controls provide a manual operating path when the system is turned off, subject to the motorcycle’s instructions. Y-AMT removes the conventional clutch lever and foot pedal, so its operating procedure during a fault is model-specific. Read the owner’s manual for warning indicators, safe-stop instructions and recovery requirements rather than assuming the motorcycle can be ridden normally after an electronic fault.
- If a warning light appears, reduce speed smoothly and move to a safe location.
- Do not repeatedly cycle the ignition or force the shift controls while the motorcycle is moving unless the manual directs you to do so.
- Record the displayed fault message and have the system inspected by a qualified technician.
- After service, verify clutch take-up, shift completion and neutral selection in a controlled area before normal riding.
Factory systems, aftermarket kits and compatibility
Factory-equipped motorcycles integrate the actuator, sensors, ECU software and gearbox calibration as one system. Honda E-Clutch applications include the CB650R, CBR650R and listed 500- and 750-series motorcycles, but availability varies by country, model year and trim. Confirm the exact specification with the manufacturer or a local dealer.

Common misconceptions
- “Automatic clutch” means no gears. Not necessarily. E-Clutch still uses a manual gearbox and foot shifter.
- The motorcycle brakes for me. It does not. Braking remains the rider’s responsibility.
- Hill starts need no brake control. The clutch controller reduces stall risk, but a separate hill-hold function cannot be assumed.
- Engine braking disappears. It remains available whenever an engaged gear connects the engine to the driven wheel; its amount varies with gear and mode.
- Every automated system feels the same. Actuator speed, shift maps, throttle response and engine characteristics differ by model.
Bottom line for a buyer or rider
Choose Honda E-Clutch if you want automated clutch engagement while keeping a familiar manual gearbox, foot shifter and clutch-lever fallback. Choose Yamaha Y-AMT if you want the motorcycle to operate both clutch and gear changes, with a choice between handlebar-controlled manual shifts and software-selected automatic shifts. In either case, the technology mainly removes coordination work: you still manage speed with the brakes, choose a safe line, control the throttle and understand how the selected gear affects engine braking.
