MotoGP Sprint points are added to the same riders’ championship total as Sunday Grand Prix points. A Sprint win is worth 12 points, a Sunday win 25, and a rider can collect 37 points in one weekend by winning both. Because only the top nine score in the Sprint, a result just inside or outside ninth can change the standings even when the Sunday finishing order is unchanged.
What Sprint points count toward
There is no separate season table for Sprint races. Every point earned on Saturday is added to the rider’s running total for the MotoGP riders’ championship, alongside points from Sunday’s Grand Prix. At the end of the season, the rider with the most accumulated points is champion.

The Sprint was introduced at the start of the 2023 season. It is run over approximately half the distance of the full Grand Prix. Qualifying establishes the starting grid for both the Saturday Sprint and Sunday race, so the same qualifying performance can affect two opportunities to score.

Sprint and Sunday scoring compared
The two races use different scales. The Sprint pays the top nine finishers; the Sunday Grand Prix pays the top 15. A rider finishing tenth or lower in the Sprint receives no Sprint points, while a tenth-place Sunday finish is worth six.

The biggest single-race reward remains Sunday’s 25 points. Winning Sunday is worth 13 more points than winning the Sprint, so a Sunday result has the greater individual effect. The Sprint still adds a second scoring opportunity to the weekend and can provide a meaningful advantage over a rival who scores nothing on Saturday.
How a complete Grand Prix weekend is calculated
Step 1: Apply the Sprint result
After the Saturday race, assign points according to the Sprint table. First place receives 12, second nine, third seven, and so on through ninth, which receives one. Positions tenth and lower receive zero Sprint points.

Step 2: Apply the Sunday result
Sunday points are then assigned independently. The winner receives 25, with points descending through fifteenth place, which receives one. Finishing sixteenth or lower yields no Sunday points.
Step 3: Add both results to the season total
Add the rider’s Sprint and Sunday points to the total already earned at earlier rounds. There is no requirement to choose one result, and a poor Sprint does not reduce Sunday points. Conversely, a rider who does not finish the Sprint can still score fully on Sunday if the Sunday result places them in the points-paying positions.

Step 4: Reorder the championship
Sort riders by their new cumulative totals. A rider can move up, move down, or remain in the same position depending on how many points every nearby rival scored during the weekend.
The maximum points available at one weekend
A rider who wins both races scores 12 Sprint points plus 25 Sunday points, for a weekend maximum of 37. That is the practical reason Sprint results matter: a rival who wins Sunday but finishes outside the Sprint’s top nine can score 25, while a rider winning both races gains 12 additional points over that rival.

It is a per-weekend ceiling, not a guarantee that every event contributes that many points to the championship; crashes, non-finishes, penalties and lower results produce fewer or zero points.
MotoGP’s January 2025 points guide gives a theoretical maximum of 814 points for a 22-Grand-Prix season. The 22-event condition is essential: 814 is not a universal maximum for every season, because the number of Grands Prix and the weekend schedule can change.
Why a few Sprint places can change the table
The ninth-place cutoff is unusually important
The difference between ninth and tenth in the Sprint is one championship point versus zero. A rider who crosses the line tenth therefore loses the entire Sprint score, while a rider one position ahead earns a point. That single point can decide a tie in the table or alter the order of riders separated by only a few points.

Front-running gaps are compressed compared with Sunday
The Sprint pays 12 points for first and nine for second, a three-point gap. On Sunday, the winner receives 25 and second receives 20, a five-point gap. Third versus fourth is separated by two Sprint points (seven versus six) but three Sunday points (16 versus 13). The Sunday race therefore creates larger gaps at the front, while the Sprint supplies more frequent chances to collect smaller increments.

Consider two riders who begin a weekend level on points. Rider A wins the Sprint for 12 points and finishes fifth Sunday for 11, scoring 23. Rider B finishes tenth in the Sprint for zero and wins Sunday for 25, scoring 25. Rider B gains two points across the weekend despite losing Saturday. This illustrates why the Sprint improves a rider’s total but does not automatically outweigh a Sunday victory.
A Sprint result can protect a lead even without a Sunday win
Suppose the championship leader finishes second in the Sprint (nine points) and fourth Sunday (13), scoring 22. A rival wins Sunday (25) but finishes outside the top nine in the Sprint, scoring 25. The rival gains only three points over the leader for the weekend. Without the Sprint, the Sunday win would have produced a larger swing relative to the leader’s Sunday result.
Worked examples of standings changes
Example: a one-point move
Rider A has 180 season points before the event and finishes ninth in the Sprint and 12th Sunday. Rider A adds one plus four, for five points, and reaches 185. Rider B has 183 before the event and finishes tenth in the Sprint and 11th Sunday. Rider B adds zero plus five, also for five, and reaches 188. The Sprint does not change their relative weekend totals in this example, but a ninth-place Sprint for Rider B instead would add one more and increase the gap.
Example: both riders score in both races
Rider C finishes third in the Sprint (seven) and second Sunday (20), adding 27. Rider D finishes second in the Sprint (nine) and third Sunday (16), adding 25. Rider C gains two points for the weekend even though Rider D beat C in the Sprint. The Sunday result’s larger scale reverses the Saturday order.

Example: a non-scoring Sprint
Rider E finishes 13th in the Sprint, so the Saturday addition is zero, then finishes seventh Sunday for nine. Rider E’s weekend total is nine. A rider finishing ninth in the Sprint (one) and eighth Sunday (eight) also scores nine. Different combinations can produce the same weekend total, which is why both race results must be added rather than judged in isolation.
Example: a double victory
Rider F wins both races and adds 37. A rival who finishes second in both adds nine plus 20, or 29. Rider F gains eight points over that rival during the weekend. The Sprint contribution is part of the eight-point advantage, not a separate award outside the championship.
What happens when riders finish level on points
MotoGP’s published championship explanation says a tie in total points is resolved by comparing riders’ best race results. The comparison starts with wins, then second-place finishes, then third places and continues down the finishing order. If riders remain tied, the explanation considers the date in the championship on which the highest place was achieved, giving precedence to the later result.
This description is MotoGP’s published explanation of the tie process. It should not be treated as a quotation of the current FIM regulation text without checking the latest regulations. In a close title fight, consult the official championship classification and the governing rules in force for that season.
How to read the live championship standings
Use MotoGP’s official 2026 riders’ championship results page for current positions and totals. Live standings are volatile: a table can change after the Sprint, again after Sunday, and later if a result is amended by a penalty or other official decision.

- Check whether the table is labelled Sprint, Grand Prix, or Championship before interpreting a number.
- Compare cumulative season points, not just the latest finishing position.
- Remember that a rider outside the top nine in the Sprint has added zero, even if the rider finished close to ninth.
- After Sunday, add both races when checking a weekend’s effect.
- For historical comparisons, note the season and number of Grands Prix; a 22-race maximum cannot be applied to a schedule with a different number of events.
Common misconceptions
“Sprint points are bonus points.”
They are not an optional bonus or a separate championship. They are ordinary riders’ championship points earned in a second race.
“The Sprint winner gets half of 25 points.”
The Sprint winner receives 12 points, not 12.5. The Sprint scale is its own fixed table, and the values are integers.
“Every Sprint finisher scores something.”
Only the top nine score. Tenth and lower receive no Sprint points, whereas Sunday points continue through 15th.
“Qualifying only matters for Sunday.”
Qualifying establishes the grids for both the Sprint and Sunday Grand Prix, so its starting-position consequence applies to both races.
“A Sprint result can replace a Sunday result.”
No. The two scores are added separately. A rider who scores in the Sprint keeps those points even if Sunday produces a non-finish, and a rider can still score Sunday points after failing to score on Saturday.
A practical way to calculate any rider’s total
- Write down the rider’s championship total before the Grand Prix weekend.
- Look up the Sprint finishing position and assign 12, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 for positions one through nine; assign zero for tenth or lower.
- Look up the Sunday finishing position and assign the corresponding value from 25 through 1 for positions one through 15; assign zero for 16th or lower.
- Add the two race scores to the pre-weekend total.
- Repeat the calculation for the riders being compared, then sort by the new cumulative totals.
- If totals are equal, apply MotoGP’s published best-result explanation and verify the current regulations for a definitive ruling.
This method shows exactly how Saturday affects the standings: it contributes a second, smaller points table to the same season total. Sunday remains the larger single opportunity, but Sprint points can accumulate over many rounds and decide positions that appear close on the championship table.
