To find out whether a seat is still within its useful life, check the seat itself or its manual for the manufacturer’s “do not use after” date or useful-life instructions. Expiration periods vary by model; there is no single period that applies to every car seat.
What information is on a car seat label?
Federal labeling requirements described by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) call for permanent labels with identifying information, including the manufacturer, model, and month and year of manufacture. These details help you identify the exact seat, check its instructions, and look for recall information. NHTSA explains the labeling requirements.

Manufacturer and model
Use the manufacturer name and model information to find the correct manual and any recall notices. Do not rely on a generic label or safety badge to identify the seat or explain every warning; consult the instructions for that specific model.

Date of manufacture
The date of manufacture (DOM) is the month and year the seat was made. NHTSA says this date is required on the label and can help establish the seat’s age and identify it for a recall. It is not, by itself, an expiration date. NHTSA’s interpretation of the manufacture-date requirement and its used-seat safety checklist explain how the date is used.

How do you find out whether a car seat has expired?
- Find the DOM. Look for the month and year on the seat’s label.
- Find the useful-life instructions. Check the seat for a stamped or printed “do not use after” date or useful-life marking. If it is not clear, consult the manual for the exact model.
- Apply the manufacturer’s calculation. Follow the instructions for that seat; do not assume another brand or model uses the same lifespan or calculation.
Federal labeling requirements establish the need for a manufacture date, not one universal expiration period. For example, Graco’s undated manufacturer guidance gives useful-life periods of 10 years for belt-positioning boosters and harnessed seats with steel-reinforced belt paths, and 7 years for harnessed seats with plastic-reinforced belt paths. Those examples apply to the Graco categories described—not to car seats generally. Graco advises owners to check the particular seat’s manual or stamped marking and explains how to calculate the end date from the manufacture date. See Graco’s useful-life guidance.

Stop using a seat once it reaches the end of its manufacturer-stated useful life, or if it otherwise fails the checks above. Choose a replacement based on your child’s age and size, the replacement seat’s height and weight limits, and compatibility with your vehicle. Follow the replacement seat’s installation instructions and your vehicle manual. NHTSA’s car seat guidance explains how to choose and use a seat appropriate for a child.
