The electric motor drives the wheels; the rotary engine does not. In the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, the rotary engine turns a generator to supply electricity to the electric drive system. The car is also a plug-in hybrid, so it can draw energy from its rechargeable battery or an external charger as well as from gasoline.
How does the Mazda rotary hybrid send power to the wheels?
The MX-30 R-EV is a series plug-in hybrid. Its power path is different from a conventional hybrid in which an engine can mechanically drive the wheels: Mazda says there is no mechanical connection between the rotary engine and the wheels. Instead, the electric motor provides the wheel-driving force, while the rotary engine turns a generator when the system needs additional electrical energy. Mazda’s 2023 European launch release describes the entire driving range as motor-powered, and Mazda UK’s 2025 press pack likewise states that the rotary unit acts as a generator.
- Energy is stored or replenished. The launch specification lists a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery can be charged from an external power source, and the car also carries gasoline for the onboard generator.
- The electric motor drives the wheels. Whether the car is using stored battery energy or electricity supplied by the generator, the motor is the component that propels it.
- The rotary engine turns the generator when needed. The generator produces electrical power for the vehicle’s electric drive system; the engine itself does not send torque mechanically to the wheels.
A simple analogy is an electric car carrying a gasoline-powered electricity generator. It is not a complete description: the R-EV also has a traction battery, can be plugged in, and uses a control system to decide when generator output is needed.
What does the rotary engine do?
Its job is to provide mechanical power to the generator, rather than to cover changing wheel speeds or drive the car through a mechanical transmission. Mazda says the rotary engine was chosen for its compact size and ability to provide the required output in a small power unit.

Mazda UK’s 2025 press pack identifies the engine as an 830 cc, single-rotor 8C unit, packaged with the generator and high-output motor. Those details describe the UK-market 2025 press materials; they should not be treated as specifications for every market or model year.
Does the MX-30 R-EV need to be plugged in?
Yes, it can be externally charged, but plugging in is not the only way it gets energy. Mazda’s launch release describes normal and fast charging, and its 2025 UK press pack specifies AC and rapid DC charging compatibility. Charging details can vary by market; the cited materials do not establish one connector or cable specification for every version, so check the documentation for the specific vehicle before choosing charging equipment.

What happens when the battery charge is low?
The generator can run to supply electrical energy to the drive system. It can also start when the system needs more power than the battery can provide, including in response to strong acceleration demand. Mazda UK describes these behaviors as part of the car’s Normal, EV, and Charge modes; they are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements.
Normal mode
Mazda says Normal mode uses electric drive while battery charge is sufficient. The generator can start when demand exceeds what the battery can supply.

EV mode
EV mode prioritizes electric driving, but Mazda says the generator may still provide output when acceleration demand is sufficiently forceful.
Charge mode
Charge mode lets the driver preserve a selected battery reserve, with the generator maintaining that level.

What range figures has Mazda published?

How is this different from a conventional hybrid?
The key distinction is the engine-to-wheel connection. In a conventional parallel hybrid, an engine can mechanically contribute to moving the wheels. In the MX-30 R-EV’s series layout, the rotary engine drives a generator and the electric motor drives the wheels. The R-EV is also externally rechargeable, unlike a hybrid that relies only on onboard fuel and regenerative energy for battery charging.
That architecture explains the phrase “rotary hybrid”: the rotary engine is part of a hybrid power system, but it is not the car’s direct wheel-drive engine. The available manufacturer materials establish how the system is arranged; they do not establish comparative fuel efficiency, long-term reliability, or ownership costs against other hybrid designs.
