Its “Multi-Solution” strategy keeps combustion engines in the mix, adds new hybrids and plug-in hybrids, and expands battery-electric vehicles according to regional conditions. The next-generation CX-5 is scheduled to pair a new gasoline engine with Mazda’s hybrid system by the end of 2027; Mazda also plans to launch its first in-house-developed battery-electric vehicle on a dedicated platform in 2027.
What Mazda’s Multi-Solution strategy means
Mazda describes the period through 2030 as the “dawn of electrification.” Instead of choosing one powertrain for every market, it plans to offer internal-combustion vehicles (ICE), hybrids (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). The company says the right mix depends on factors such as local energy sources, regulation, infrastructure, customer preferences and how people use their vehicles.
That is Mazda’s stated rationale, not proof that this approach will produce a particular environmental or commercial result. The company presents the strategy as a phased transition that leaves it room to adjust technologies and timing as markets change.
What Mazda plans to launch, and when
| Route or program | Plan and timing | Commitment and important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Next-generation CX-5 hybrid | Mazda plans to combine its SKYACTIV-Z 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine with its proprietary hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5, scheduled for introduction by the end of 2027. | This is a company schedule, not a confirmed on-sale date or final specification. Mazda has not established market-by-market availability. |
| In-house-developed BEV | Mazda plans to launch its first in-house-developed BEV in 2027 on a dedicated EV platform. It says the vehicle will be produced in Japan for global deployment. | The launch is planned, but the model name, price, range, charging speed and release timing in individual markets have not been stated in the cited company material. |
| Potential BEV plug-in hybrid derivative | Mazda says a PHEV derivative of the planned in-house BEV is being considered. | It is an option under consideration, not a confirmed model. |
| Changan Mazda EVs | Mazda’s 2025 briefing separately discussed the MAZDA EZ-6, produced by the Changan Mazda joint venture, and said development of a second crossover SUV was progressing. | The briefing also said third and fourth models were under consideration. These joint-venture plans are distinct from Mazda’s planned in-house global BEV. |
| Large-architecture products and rotary-engine work | Mazda says combustion improvements from SKYACTIV-Z development will inform its inline-six engines and provide a roadmap for rotary-engine emissions development. | The company is considering applying elements of its hybrid system to large-architecture products; no specific model launch is confirmed. |
Why Mazda is still developing combustion engines
Mazda says SKYACTIV-Z is a 2.5-liter gasoline engine under development, intended to serve as a core engine for its lineup in the electrification era. The company says its combustion improvements are meant to support fuel economy and driving performance while meeting strict emissions requirements. Its planned pairing with a hybrid system makes the CX-5 program part of its electrification plan, even though it is not a BEV.

Mazda’s 2025 Integrated Report offers one example of the engineering challenge behind its combustion work: the company estimated that achieving SPCCI combustion conformity would require 16,000 times as many hours as Skyactiv-G development using conventional methods. Mazda says it kept Skyactiv-X development time to less than one-third of Skyactiv-G’s by using combustion models and AI methods. These are company-reported historical development figures, not forecasts for the new engine or proof of future performance.
How many of Mazda’s 2030 sales could be electric?
Mazda estimates that BEVs will account for 25%–40% of its global sales in 2030, conditional on trends in electrification policies and tighter regulation. This is a company forecast, not a current sales share or a guarantee. The wide range reflects the uncertainty Mazda associates with the pace of market and policy change.

How Mazda plans to fund and build the transition
In its March 18, 2025 “Lean Asset Strategy” announcement, Mazda said it planned around ¥1.5 trillion in electrification investment through 2030. The company said its comparable expectation had risen to around ¥2 trillion as inflation increased costs, and that collaboration was expected to halve the battery-investment assumption from ¥750 billion, taking inflation into account. These are Mazda’s investment estimates and plans.
Mazda also set out expected development and factory savings for the planned 2027 BEV. The figures below are Mazda’s projections from its March 2025 announcement, not independently measured results.

| Expected saving | Mazda’s stated comparison |
|---|---|
| 40% lower development investment | Expected for the planned BEV through collaboration, compared with conventional development. |
| 50% fewer development man-hours | Expected for the planned BEV through collaboration, compared with conventional development. |
| 85% lower initial capital investment | Estimated for producing BEVs and engine vehicles on the same line, compared with building a new factory dedicated to BEVs. |
| 80% shorter mass-production preparation time | Estimated for the same mixed-production-line approach, compared with preparing a new BEV-dedicated factory. |
The approach is intended to make greater use of existing assets and partner expertise rather than rely only on new, dedicated facilities. Mazda’s climate-change page also describes a separate collaboration with Toyota: the companies began a verification test in August 2025 connecting a Sweep Energy Storage System using Toyota automotive batteries to internal power systems at Mazda’s Hiroshima Plant. Mazda says the test is intended to support critical-resource procurement resilience and sustainable battery reuse in Japan; it is not described as a finalized vehicle-battery supply agreement.

- It establishes a multi-powertrain direction: Mazda intends to continue ICE development while adding HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs, with the mix varying by market.
- It gives two major planned milestones: the next-generation CX-5 hybrid is scheduled by the end of 2027, and the dedicated-platform in-house BEV is planned for 2027.
- It gives a sales forecast, not a target already achieved: the 25%–40% BEV share for 2030 is Mazda’s estimate and depends on policy and regulatory trends.
- It leaves key product details unresolved: Mazda has not stated final specifications, pricing or country-by-country launch dates for the in-house BEV in the cited material, and the PHEV derivative remains under consideration.
The strategy is therefore a roadmap, not a promise that every market will get the same powertrains at the same time. Mazda’s Multi-Solution Briefing 2025, March 2025 Lean Asset Strategy announcement, 2030 Management Policy, 2025 Integrated Report and sustainability pages are the company sources for the plans and estimates described here.
