The car behind the “forgotten V-10 sedan” description is most likely the Audi S8 5.2 FSI quattro: a discreet, performance-focused version of Audi’s A8 flagship. Its 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10, six-speed automatic and permanent all-wheel drive made it unusual among luxury sedans of its era. “Germany’s best kept secret” is a fitting hook for its understated character, not a measurable claim about its sales or rarity.
What was the Audi S8 V10?
The S8 was the sporting derivative of the A8, Audi’s luxury flagship. In the 2007 Osaka Motor Show material, Audi described the S8 as its first model with a ten-cylinder engine. The point was not an exotic-looking body: it was flagship-sedan comfort and restraint paired with a large, high-revving gasoline engine.
Audi said the engine’s development drew on technical know-how from the Lamborghini Gallardo. That establishes an engineering connection, not that the S8 simply received an unchanged Gallardo engine. The torque figures describe different things: 540 Nm is the stated maximum, while Audi Japan’s 90%-available statement concerns how much torque is on tap from a specified engine speed. The archived February 2006 technical sheet gives a peak-torque rpm of 3,500. They should not be merged into a single rpm claim.

How fast was the 5.2-liter Audi S8?
Audi-attributed launch material gives a 0–100 km/h time of 5.1 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. These are manufacturer claims, not independently instrumented test results. The launch figures appear in the 2005 Audi S8 launch release hosted by Bilpriser.dk; Audi’s February 2006 technical data sheet also lists the figures.
Was the S8’s V10 a Lamborghini engine?
Audi’s wording is narrower: the S8 V10 drew on technical know-how from the Gallardo. That supports a relationship in engineering expertise, but it does not establish that the S8 used the Gallardo’s engine unchanged. Calling it simply “the Gallardo engine” overstates what the cited Audi material says.

Why did the S8 feel like a sleeper?
The contrast is the car’s defining appeal: an aluminum-bodied A8-based luxury sedan with a naturally aspirated V10, rather than a conspicuously styled sports car. The period specification combines 450 PS with a six-speed Tiptronic and permanent quattro traction. Audi’s Danish-market launch headline called it “the luxury-class’s discreet sports car,” a promotional phrase that neatly captures the intended blend without proving anything about sales or public recognition.

Specifications and equipment should be read in their original market context. Audi Japan’s 2008 A8/S8 launch release covers the Japanese lineup and pricing; its prices are not a basis for quoting a figure in another country. Audi’s archived 2008 U.S. brochure separately corroborates the V10, 450-hp output, Tiptronic and quattro for that market. The figures above use Audi Japan’s period metric specifications unless another source context is stated.

Period manufacturer documents establish what Audi claimed about the S8 when it was new. They do not establish present-day used-car values, reliability rates, parts availability, production totals or how many remain on the road. No numerical basis for calling the car rare is established here.
