The exact number of points he needs is not established by the currently available official standings and event-format information, so a reliable numerical target cannot be given yet.
What Verstappen needs to clinch in Las Vegas
The title is decided by season points. After the Las Vegas race, compare Verstappen’s total with every rival’s highest possible final total. If each rival is mathematically unable to catch him, Verstappen has clinched. Formula 1 describes a pre-finale clinch as the point when no other driver can mathematically catch the leader (Formula 1’s championship explainer).
A rival who can only draw level still requires a countback check: Formula 1 first compares race wins, then second places, and continues through lower finishing positions until the tie is broken. A points lead alone is not enough if a rival can still equal the leader’s total.
How to calculate the Las Vegas threshold
- Begin with the official post-Brazil standings. Use the complete Drivers’ Championship table after the Brazilian Grand Prix, scheduled for November 6–8, 2026.
- Add the Las Vegas results. Account for each driver’s Grand Prix points and include sprint points only if the event’s official format includes a sprint.
- Calculate what remains after Las Vegas. For every contender, total the maximum points available in the remaining rounds, including any sprint points where applicable.
- Compare each rival’s reachable total with Verstappen’s. If no rival can catch his post-Las Vegas score, he is champion. If a rival can tie it, apply the official countback rules.
A Grand Prix awards points to the top ten finishers in this order: 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 (Formula 1). The final threshold also depends on points already scored, Las Vegas results, the number and format of events afterward, and possible countback ties.

Why an exact points target is not available
The 2026 calendar places Las Vegas on November 19–21 as round 21, after Brazil and before Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The official calendar lists Qatar for November 27–29 and Abu Dhabi for December 4–6 (Formula 1’s 2026 calendar). However, the available official material does not establish a complete current championship table or all remaining sprint formats. Without those inputs, any specific number of points Verstappen must score—or any claimed clinching scenario—would be speculation.

Verstappen won the Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023 and 2025; George Russell won in 2024 (Formula 1’s Las Vegas event page). The Strip Circuit is 6.201 km (3.853 miles) long. The same event page reports 181 overtakes in the 2023 race and 77 in 2024. Those results and statistics provide context, but they do not show whether Verstappen will be in a position to clinch in 2026.
