There is no verified public count of Tesla robotaxis operating across every market. The latest dated figure is 546 vehicles registered in Texas on September 26, 2026—420 Model Ys and 126 Cybercabs. That is a statewide registration tally, not proof that 546 cars were deployed, available for rides, or carrying passengers. In Austin, a community tracker cited by Electrek recorded eight vehicles carrying riders during the seven days ending around September 22, 2026.
The best answer depends on what “running” means
People use “on the road,” “in service” and “actually running” as if they describe one number. They do not. A vehicle can be registered to a robotaxi program without being deployed, visible on a public street, available in an app or carrying a passenger at that moment.

What the Texas number actually tells you
TickerBrief says it counted the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles vehicle list three times daily. Its September 26 tally identified 546 Tesla Robotaxi vehicles: 420 Model Ys and 126 Cybercabs.

What was seen carrying passengers in Austin
Electrek, citing community tracker Robotaxi Tracker, reported that eight Tesla robotaxis were seen carrying riders in Austin during the preceding seven days as of September 22, 2026.
That tracker also reported more than 100 unique vehicles carrying riders in early September, while typical observations for much of the year were in the 20-to-40 range. Those figures describe vehicles observed over particular windows, not how many were operating simultaneously. A car seen once during a week and a car available in the app at 2 p.m. are different measurements.
Where Tesla says the service is operating
Tesla’s Q2 2026 update described unsupervised operations ramping in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa. It listed Phoenix and Las Vegas as markets in preparation. Tesla’s Robotaxi page likewise names Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa without giving a fleet total.

The company also said it had started Cybercab production and reported employee rides on its Texas campus. Those statements do not show how many produced or registered vehicles are providing paid public rides.

They cover different geographies
The 546 figure is statewide Texas. The eight-vehicle observation is Austin only. Neither number represents all cities combined.
They count different things
One is a registration-list tally; the other is observed passenger-carrying activity. Registration is a legal status, while a passenger observation is an event during a defined period.
They use different dates and windows
The Texas count is a point-in-time tally from September 26. The Austin count covers seven days ending around September 22. Comparing them as if they were simultaneous snapshots produces a false precision.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Supported: At least 546 Tesla Robotaxi vehicles appeared on the Texas registration list on September 26, 2026.
- Supported: Eight vehicles were observed carrying passengers in Austin over the seven-day period reported on September 22, 2026.
- Supported: Tesla publicly identified six ramping unsupervised markets and two preparation markets in its Q2 update.
- Not established: The number of Tesla robotaxis simultaneously available across all markets.
- Not established: The number operating without a safety monitor at any given moment.
- Not established: The number of Cybercabs in commercial passenger service nationwide.
The earlier Texas figure is no longer current
Axios reported about 420 Texas registrations, including 45 Cybercabs, around September 4, 2026. The later September 26 registry tally is higher, so the Axios figure should not be presented as the current Texas count.
Bottom line for anyone asking “How many are there right now?”
The most defensible answer is: 546 registered in Texas as of September 26, 2026, but only eight Austin vehicles were reported carrying passengers during the seven days ending around September 22. Those numbers are not a fleet-versus-fleet comparison. Tesla has not published a comparable all-market total, and the available public evidence cannot establish how many robotaxis are simultaneously on trips, waiting for requests or operating without monitors.
