At a UK motorway service station, an ultra-rapid charger typically takes about 20–30 minutes to charge an EV from 20% to 80%. A rapid charger usually takes about 30–75 minutes for the same 20%–80% window. Those are planning estimates, not full-charge times or guarantees for every car.
The Department for Transport’s comparison assumes a representative 70–80 kWh battery, efficiency of 3.5 miles per kWh and charging losses. Your actual stop can be shorter or longer depending on the vehicle’s maximum charging rate, battery condition, starting percentage, target percentage, charger operation and any shared site-power limitation.

The practical answer: 20–30 minutes or 30–75 minutes
Motorway charging times are normally discussed by charger class and by a defined battery window. The most useful comparison is not “empty to full”, but the common road-trip stop from 20% to 80%.

| Ultra-rapid | 150 kW or more | About 20–30 minutes | 250-plus miles |
The power bands are the Department for Transport’s current definitions and describe the charger’s maximum category. National Highways identifies rapid and ultra-rapid units as the charger types typically found at motorway services. The mileage figures are broad National Highways estimates, not a promise that every EV will gain the top number.

A 20%–80% stop is deliberately shorter than charging to 100%. Public fast-charging power usually varies during a session, and the car may reduce the rate as the battery fills. Consequently, adding the final 20% can take disproportionately longer than adding the first part of the charge. The figures above should be used to plan a break, not to schedule an exact departure minute.
What “rapid” and “ultra-rapid” mean in practice
Rapid charging: 50 kW to under 150 kW
A rapid unit has a maximum rated output from 50 kW up to, but not including, 150 kW. The Department for Transport’s typical 20%–80% estimate is 30–75 minutes. The wide range reflects differences between cars and batteries rather than a single guaranteed speed.
National Highways estimates roughly 90–250 miles of range added in 30 minutes on a rapid charger. A less efficient car, a larger battery or a vehicle that accepts only a modest charging rate will tend towards the lower end. A highly efficient vehicle capable of using most of the available output may add more.
Ultra-rapid charging: 150 kW or more
Ultra-rapid equipment is rated at 150 kW or above. Under the same 20%–80% comparison, the typical estimate is about 20–30 minutes. National Highways gives a broad estimate of more than 250 miles added in 30 minutes, but that figure depends heavily on the EV’s efficiency and charging capability.
A 350 kW label does not mean every connected car will receive 350 kW. It means the chargepoint can offer up to that level when the vehicle, battery and site supply all allow it. A car limited to a lower maximum will not become faster simply because the post has a higher number.
Why the same charger can take different amounts of time
The car’s maximum charging rate
The charger’s kW figure is its maximum potential output. The vehicle has its own maximum acceptance rate, and the lower limit generally determines what can flow at a given moment. If a car can accept 100 kW, connecting it to a 150 kW or 350 kW unit does not make it charge at the post’s headline rate.

Charging capability can also vary across versions of the same model. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s specification for the particular battery and trim, rather than assuming that a charger’s rating is the car’s charging speed.
Battery management and state of charge
The vehicle can deliberately limit power to protect battery health. Charging behaviour also changes as the battery approaches a high state of charge, which is why a 20%–80% road-trip stop is a more useful benchmark than empty-to-full.
Starting at 40% instead of 20% means less energy is needed, while stopping at 90% instead of 80% adds a slower portion of the session. Two drivers using the same post can therefore report very different times without either account being wrong.
Shared site power and charger conditions
Insufficient grid supply or a shared load at the site can reduce the output available to an individual vehicle. A post may display a high maximum rating while delivering less at that moment because another vehicle is charging, the site is balancing demand or the equipment is operating below its normal capability.
These limits are separate from the car’s own restrictions. The delivered rate is the result of the vehicle, the chargepoint and the live site conditions working together.

Battery size, efficiency and losses
The Department for Transport’s typical calculation assumes a 70–80 kWh battery, 3.5 miles per kWh and charging losses. A vehicle with a different usable battery size or efficiency will not map exactly to those timings or mileage additions. A larger battery may need more energy for the same percentage increase; an efficient vehicle may travel farther on each kilowatt-hour.

How to estimate your own motorway charging stop
You cannot calculate an exact duration from the words “EV” and “motorway service station” alone. The title does not identify the vehicle, starting percentage, target percentage or charger available. Use the following process for a realistic estimate.
- Check the car’s maximum DC charging rate. Find the figure for your exact battery and model year. Treat it as the vehicle’s ceiling, not a guaranteed sustained rate.
- Identify the charger class. A rapid unit is 50 kW to under 150 kW; an ultra-rapid unit is 150 kW or more. The class sets an upper category, not the power your car must receive.
- Set the starting and target percentages. For a normal comparison, use 20% to 80%. If your trip requires 90% or more, allow extra time because the final part may be slower.
- Estimate the energy required. As a simple illustration, moving a 75 kWh battery from 20% to 80% represents about 45 kWh before charging losses. The actual usable capacity and the energy drawn from the grid can differ.
- Use the published range as a check. For a 30-minute break, National Highways’ broad guide is 90–250 miles on rapid and 250-plus miles on ultra-rapid. Compare that with your car’s real efficiency rather than selecting the highest number.
- Add contingency. Allow time to find the bay, authenticate or start the session, deal with a busy site and move the car when charging finishes. Those activities are not included in the charge-time estimates.
Do not divide the battery capacity by the charger’s headline kW and assume the result is exact. That calculation ignores the vehicle’s acceptance limit, charging losses, power taper, starting state of charge and any shared site constraint.
What a motorway charging stop usually involves
1. Choose a site and connector that fit the car
Before leaving, check that the service area has the required rapid or ultra-rapid equipment and the connector used by your vehicle. Availability can change during the journey, so a route-planning or charger-location service can help you check the site before committing to a low battery level. DfT identifies industry providers, including Zapmap, as examples of services that publish charging-location information; live availability is site-specific.
2. Arrive with a buffer
Do not plan to reach a remote motorway site with only the exact energy needed to continue. A busy station, an out-of-service bay or a lower-than-expected delivered rate can extend the stop. The estimates are based on charging performance, not on a guaranteed queue-free experience.
3. Start the session and watch the delivered power
The charger’s screen or vehicle display may show the instantaneous kW rate. It can be below the post’s rating because of the car’s limit, battery management or site sharing. A lower number is not automatically a fault.
4. Stop at the percentage that suits the next leg
For many motorway journeys, 20%–80% is the benchmark used by official guidance. Charging beyond the required level can add time that does not materially improve the next leg. If the next suitable charger is far away, a higher target may be sensible; include the extra time in your plan.

How much range can 30 minutes add?
National Highways gives these broad planning ranges:
| Session | National Highways estimate | Why your result may differ |
|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes on rapid | About 90–250 miles | Vehicle efficiency, battery size, car acceptance rate, starting charge and site output |
| 30 minutes on ultra-rapid | 250-plus miles | Not every EV can accept ultra-rapid power, and the delivered rate may taper or be shared |
These are not guaranteed distances for a particular model. “Miles added” combines the energy delivered with the car’s efficiency. Two cars receiving the same energy can show different added ranges, while two cars with similar range can charge at different speeds.
What to do if charging is slower than expected
The car never approaches the charger’s advertised kW
First compare the car’s maximum charging rate with the post rating. If the vehicle’s limit is lower, the difference is normal. Then check the starting percentage and whether the battery is already in a slower part of its charging curve.
The rate drops while another vehicle is connected
A shared power arrangement can reduce output. If another bay is using the site’s available supply, the individual rate may fall even though both chargepoints remain operational. Waiting for a different bay or another site may be faster when the reduction is substantial, but availability and travel time determine whether moving is worthwhile.

The session is far beyond the estimate
Check for a connector or authentication problem, an equipment fault message, an unusually high starting percentage or a target set close to full. If the charger reports an error, follow the operator’s support instructions and use another operational bay or site if safe. Do not treat the 20%–80% estimate as evidence that a particular charger must deliver a fixed time.

England’s motorway charging network in 2026
A Department for Transport parliamentary answer published on 7 September 2026 reported more than 1,740 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers at England’s 116 motorway service areas, using July 2026 industry data. The answer said this total had trebled over the three years from July 2023 to July 2026.
This is an England-specific count, not a UK-wide total for motorway service areas. It describes the number of rapid and ultra-rapid chargers in the stated dataset, not a guarantee that every unit is available, working or free when you arrive. Check current site information for a particular journey.
The official explanation in one sentence
“The time it takes to charge an EV will vary according to the speed of the chargepoint – ultra-rapid, rapid, fast or slow – which is based on its power output (in kilowatts – kW), and the type of battery in the EV.”

This wording comes from the Competition and Markets Authority’s 2021 report. It captures why a charger label alone cannot produce an exact answer: power output and battery type both matter.
Bottom line
Plan on about 20–30 minutes from 20% to 80% at an ultra-rapid motorway charger or about 30–75 minutes at a rapid charger. Use those figures with your car’s charging specification, the amount of energy you actually need and live site conditions. They describe a representative UK comparison, not a full charge and not a promise that every EV will finish within the same window.
