There is no reliable, sourced mileage figure that predicts how long a BMW E46 330i’s M54B30 engine will last. Its remaining life depends on the individual car’s maintenance and condition—especially whether it has suffered a severe overheat—so service records and a careful inspection matter more than an odometer threshold.
Which engine is in the E46 330i?
This article concerns the non-M E46 330i and its M54B30 inline-six. It does not concern the E46 M3, which uses the S54. BMW technical training material identifies the broader M54 family but does not give a lifespan estimate for the E46 330i’s engine.
How long does an E46 330i engine last?
The available evidence does not establish a typical or guaranteed service life in miles. Owner accounts of high-mileage M54s exist, but anecdotes do not show how long a typical engine will last or predict the remaining life of a particular car. Mileage alone is not a sound basis for estimating that car’s future.
For a purchase or ownership decision, prioritize dated maintenance records, evidence of overheating or coolant loss, current cooling-system condition, and a diagnostic inspection. These factors help assess the specific engine; they do not produce a mathematical remaining-life estimate.

Why overheating deserves particular attention
BMW service information for E46 M54 models includes a diagnostic procedure for engine overheating. It calls for inspecting the plastic heater-core feed pipe beneath the intake manifold. BMW states that deterioration on the inside of the pipe—such as worn-away or bubbling plastic—indicates the engine has been severely overheated and calls for further checks for internal engine damage. See BMW SI B17 01 02, August 2008, and the related BMW SI B11 07 08, August 2008.
A repaired cooling system does not by itself prove that an engine escaped damage from an earlier severe overheat. Ask whether the temperature warning came on, whether coolant was lost, and what inspections followed. If there is evidence of a serious overheat, arrange a BMW-experienced technician’s assessment rather than assuming that replacing a pipe or other cooling part settles the question.

How to assess a high-mileage E46 330i
Review the maintenance history
Look for dated invoices and a consistent record of work, rather than relying on a broad claim that the car was maintained. Missing records do not prove neglect, but they leave more uncertainty about the engine’s history.
Ask about overheating and coolant loss
Ask directly about temperature warnings, coolant loss, and previous overheating repairs. Check for visible leaks and evidence of recent cooling-system work. Confirm replacement-part fitment by the car’s VIN and configuration before ordering; BMW’s service information also notes that fan arrangements differ by transmission.

Investigate symptoms instead of guessing at parts
Warning lights, misfires, whistling, rough running, and fluid loss call for diagnosis, not an automatic parts list. BMW technical training material describes crankcase-ventilation faults as a possible source of mixture or misfire codes, whistling, and drivability complaints. Those symptoms can overlap with other faults, so they do not identify one failed component on their own. The surfaced training passage is not an E46 330i lifespan study or a direct durability finding for the M54B30.
Get an independent inspection
If records are incomplete, symptoms are present, or an overheat is suspected, have a BMW-experienced technician inspect the individual car. An inspection can identify current faults and signs that merit deeper engine checks; it cannot guarantee how many miles the engine will run in the future.

Is the M54B30 reliable?
The evidence here supports a condition-based answer, not a blanket reliability verdict: a well-documented, carefully inspected example is a more defensible prospect than one with an unclear history or signs of severe overheating. A secondary overview of the M54 discusses owner concerns and high-mileage anecdotes, but it is not a controlled reliability study or a source for a typical lifespan: BMWBLOG’s M54 overview, published December 7, 2024.
The engine is only one part of an E46 330i purchase. Body, chassis, transmission, and electrical condition also affect whether the complete car is worth owning, but they are separate from this engine-focused assessment.
