The headline changes were revised engine management and emissions compliance, more torque at a lower engine speed, standard electronic suspension with automatic load compensation, adaptive LED lighting and a 10.25-inch TFT display. BMW announced the update on October 28, 2021, with a U.S. launch planned for February 2022; the announcement does not mean every component was redesigned.
What changed on the BMW K 1600 models?
BMW Motorrad USA’s October 28, 2021 announcement described a substantial update for model year 2022. The six-cylinder engine retained its displacement and peak horsepower, while BMW revised its controls to meet EU-5 requirements and changed the output curve. The package also brought specified chassis, lighting, display and equipment updates. The specifications and performance claims below are BMW’s announcement figures, not independent test results. BMW Motorrad USA’s announcement and BMW’s global announcement provide the underlying details.
Engine and output
BMW kept the inline six at 1,649 cc and 160 hp. For the refreshed models, BMW listed peak power at 6,750 rpm, compared with 7,750 rpm previously. Listed peak torque rose from 129 lb-ft to 133 lb-ft, now reached at 5,250 rpm. BMW attributed the changes to EU-5 compliance and updated engine controls, including BMS-O engine management, two knock sensors and four lambda probes instead of two. BMW said the greater torque improved acceleration across the speed range; that is the manufacturer’s claim, not a conclusion from a comparative road test. Engine drag torque control (MSR) was specified as standard.
Suspension, lighting and instruments
BMW listed Dynamic ESA Next Generation electronic suspension with fully automatic load compensation as standard across all four models. Its global announcement says damping adapts to riding conditions and maneuvers, while load compensation covers all load states. The U.S. announcement also specified a full LED adaptive headlight, a full-color 10.25-inch TFT multifunction instrument cluster, smartphone connectivity features and four programmable favorite buttons.

Audio equipment varies by market
Audio System 2.0 should not be treated as a universal standard feature. BMW Motorrad USA described it as optional. BMW’s global announcement, by contrast, specified it as standard on the GTL and Grand America. Buyers should check the equipment for the particular market, model and motorcycle rather than assume identical fitment.
How the four K 1600 models differ
BMW positioned the models around different touring styles and body configurations. These descriptions are BMW’s own lineup positioning; the announcement does not provide a comparative assessment of comfort, handling or real-world performance.

For a practical choice, start with the body style and equipment arrangement BMW describes: GT for its dynamic positioning, GTL for the standard top case and comfort emphasis, and B or Grand America for the low-slung bagger family. Confirm the precise package and audio fitment in the market where the motorcycle is being sold.
