There is no single, generation-independent winner between the BMW 6 Series Coupé and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe. The right comparison is between specific cars that match in model year, body style, engine, drivetrain, trim and market. Those details matter: the BMW 6 Series was sold as a Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé, while the E-Class Coupe’s engines, transmissions and specifications also changed over time.
First, make sure you are comparing the right cars
Start with the vehicle’s exact identity, not just the badge. On the BMW side, distinguish the two-door Coupé from the Convertible and the four-door Gran Coupé; BMW’s 2014 range materials treat them as separate body styles. Do not use a Gran Coupé specification to evaluate a Coupé. On either make, confirm the generation, model year, trim and sales market, since equipment and powertrains can differ by year and country. BMW’s 2014 range overview
- Body style: Coupé against Coupé, not a BMW Convertible or Gran Coupé.
- Model year and generation: Record both for each candidate.
- Market: Confirm where the car was originally specified and sold; similarly named trims do not guarantee identical specifications across markets.
- Trim and drivetrain: Note the exact engine version and whether the car is rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Power and performance depend on the version
Manufacturer figures show why a broad badge-to-badge verdict can mislead. BMW’s 2011 UK-market launch release lists two 6 Series Coupé examples: the 640i and 650i. Mercedes-Benz USA’s guide for 2018 models lists rear-wheel-drive and 4MATIC versions of the E 400 Coupe. These are useful illustrations of each range, not a matched-year, matched-market test.
| Example configuration | Output | Published acceleration | Fuel economy |
| 2011 UK BMW 640i Coupé | 320 hp; 450 Nm | 0–62 mph in 5.4 seconds | 36.7 mpg combined |
| 2011 UK BMW 650i Coupé | 407 hp; 600 Nm | 0–62 mph in 4.9 seconds | 27.2 mpg combined |
| 2018 US Mercedes-Benz E 400 Coupe, rear-wheel drive | 329 hp; 354 lb-ft | 0–60 mph in 5.5 seconds | Not stated in the cited guide |
| 2018 US Mercedes-Benz E 400 4MATIC Coupe | 329 hp; 354 lb-ft | 0–60 mph in 5.2 seconds | Not stated in the cited guide |
The BMW figures are from BMW Group’s 2011 UK-market release; the Mercedes figures are from Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2017 guide for 2018 models. Do not rank the acceleration numbers as if they came from a controlled head-to-head: the BMW figures use 0–62 mph, the Mercedes figures use 0–60 mph, and the cars differ in year and market. The Mercedes guide identifies a 3.0L V6 biturbo and a nine-speed automatic for the listed E 400s. BMW’s 2011 release specifies an eight-speed Sport automatic for its listed 640i and 650i. Why model year changes the comparison
Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2016 overview describes E 400 and E 550 Coupe powertrains and a seven-speed automatic in that earlier context; its guide for 2018 models lists a nine-speed automatic for the E 400 Coupe. The BMW’s engines and available technologies likewise depend on the range and year. Compare the specifications for the actual candidate vehicles rather than assuming that every E-Class Coupe or 6 Series shares one transmission or engine. Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2016 overview
Dimensions and equipment: use the exact market specification
For the listed 2018 US E 400 Coupe and E 400 4MATIC Coupe, Mercedes-Benz USA gives a length of 190.0 inches, width of 73.2 inches, height of 56.3 inches and wheelbase of 113.1 inches. Those figures apply to the named US-market models, not every E-Class Coupe. BMW’s 2014 range material discusses available features across the 6 Series range, including Dynamic Damper Control, Adaptive Drive, Integral Active Steering, xDrive and driver-assistance systems; availability depends on model and specification. Equipment lists from a launch release or press guide are not proof that a particular used car has that feature. BMW’s 2011 UK release lists electric seat adjustment with memory, navigation and front and rear Park Distance Control for the 640i and 650i, with 18-inch wheels on the 640i and 19-inch wheels on the 650i. Treat these as specifications for those launch-context cars, not a guarantee for another year, market or used example. Check the vehicle’s original specification and inspect the equipment in person. How to choose between two specific used cars
Once the identity and published specification line up, compare the actual vehicles. Official model guides explain what a version could be equipped with; they cannot establish the condition, service record or asking price of the individual car you are considering.

- Write down each car’s identity: make, model, body style, generation, model year, trim, engine, drivetrain and original market.
- Compare like with like: check engine output, transmission and drivetrain first. Compare acceleration only when the year, drivetrain and measurement convention are sufficiently aligned, and label 0–60 mph and 0–62 mph figures accurately.
- Verify the equipment on the car: confirm advertised options and features against the individual vehicle and its market-specific specification.
- Review condition and service history: assess the particular car, its records and any inspection findings rather than inferring its likely state from its model name.
- Compare local asking prices: use current listings for comparable year, body style, trim, mileage and condition in your market. The manufacturer sources cited here do not establish current used-car values.
Which one should you buy?
Choose between the two cars in front of you, not between the badges in the abstract. A BMW 640i, BMW 650i and Mercedes E 400 can differ substantially in output, drivetrain, year and specification; a different generation or market may change the comparison again. The available manufacturer figures do not establish a universal reliability, depreciation or ownership-cost winner, so base the decision on the exact vehicle’s condition, history, equipment and local price.
