How Long Do Car Seats Last—and When Should You Replace One?

Car seats have model-specific useful-life dates. Learn where to find yours, when a crash requires replacement, and what to check before using a second-hand seat.

Car seats do not have one universal lifespan. Check the expiration or useful-life date for your exact seat on its label or in its instruction manual, and replace it when the manufacturer says to. Replace a seat after a moderate or severe crash. After a minor crash, replacement is not automatic under NHTSA guidance—but every condition in its five-part test must be met, and the manufacturer’s instructions still apply.

How long do car seats last?

The useful life depends on the seat’s make and model. Find the expiration or useful-life date on the seat or in its manual; do not assume every seat lasts six years. Transport Canada’s reference table illustrates the variation: among products listed for Canada, it gives six years for Baby Trend infant seats, six to 10 years for several Britax seat types, and nine years for Clek infant/convertible and booster seats. Those examples are not universal rules: the table is based on information manufacturers provided voluntarily, may change, and is not a substitute for the date and instructions for your specific seat.

Where is the expiration date on a car seat?

Check the labels on the seat and the instruction manual for its manufacture date and expiration or useful-life date. If you cannot find or interpret the information, contact the seat manufacturer with the model details. In Canada, Transport Canada says not to use a seat beyond its stated expiry or useful-life date. Follow the exact seat’s instructions for your market.

When should I replace a car seat after a crash?

After a moderate or severe crash

NHTSA says never to use a car seat involved in a moderate or severe crash; replace it.

After a minor crash

NHTSA says car seats do not automatically need replacement following a minor crash. For its minor-crash exception to apply, all five conditions must be true:

  • The vehicle could be driven away from the crash site.
  • The door nearest the car seat was not damaged.
  • No one was injured.
  • No airbags deployed.
  • The car seat has no visible damage.

If even one condition is not met, the crash does not satisfy NHTSA’s definition of minor. Always check the seat manufacturer’s crash instructions as well; those instructions still matter.

Can I use a second-hand car seat?

Be cautious, especially if you do not know the seat’s history. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises avoiding a used seat when its history is unknown. Before considering one, verify each of the following:

  • It was not involved in a moderate or severe crash.
  • The manufacture-date and model labels are intact and readable, and the seat has not passed its useful-life date.
  • It has not been recalled.
  • All parts are present and in good condition.
  • The instruction book is available.

If the crash history, date, recall status, or completeness is uncertain, contact the manufacturer rather than guessing.

How do I choose a replacement seat?

Choose based on the child’s age and size, the seat’s stated height and weight limits, and whether it fits your vehicle. Check current recall status and follow the installation and use instructions for the specific seat. The AAP says, “No one seat is the ‘best’ or ‘safest.’” A higher price does not by itself mean a seat is safer or easier to use.
