Instead of using lobes on a rotating shaft to impose the same basic timing relationship on every cycle, the system uses electro-hydraulic-pneumatic hardware, valve-position sensors and a control computer to decide when each intake and exhaust valve opens, how long it stays open and, to a lesser extent, how far it lifts. Freevalve describes this architecture on its official technology overview.
That is what “camless” means here: not that the engine has no valve train, but that valve motion is no longer mechanically fixed to crankshaft rotation by a cam profile. The result is cylinder-by-cylinder and valve-by-valve freedom, along with extra compressors, pumps, electronics and cooling that a conventional camshaft does not need.

What replaces the camshaft in a Freevalve engine?
How a conventional camshaft controls valves
In a conventional four-stroke engine, the crankshaft turns the camshaft through a fixed mechanical relationship. Each cam lobe pushes an intake or exhaust valve open at a predetermined crank angle, and the lobe’s shape determines opening speed, lift and closing behavior. Variable cam phasers can move the whole event earlier or later, and some systems switch between different profiles, but the valve events remain constrained by the hardware installed on the shaft.

That mechanical connection is durable and comparatively simple, but it forces compromises. Valve timing selected for high-rpm power may not be ideal for idle, low-load efficiency, emissions or turbocharger response. A camshaft also makes the valves in a given bank follow the same profile unless additional mechanisms are added.

Freevalve’s actuator architecture
Freevalve removes the cam lobes and gives each valve its own actuator. The company calls the system fully variable valve actuation and describes the actuator as electro-hydraulic-pneumatic. In a 2016 Qoros announcement, the same basic device is called a pneumatic-hydraulic-electronic actuator; the wording differs, but both descriptions refer to a valve moved and controlled through pneumatic and hydraulic elements under electronic command.
Freevalve’s component description identifies several parts working as one system:
- An algorithm and engine-control software determine valve events from the requested operating condition.
- A supply rail carries compressed air, oil and electrical signals to the top end.
- High-time-resolution valve-position sensors report where the valves are moving.
- Independently controlled actuators operate the individual valves.
- Variable-stiffness pneumatic valve springs provide the restoring force and allow the spring behavior to be adjusted.
The 2020 technical account adds a Top End Control System (TECS), an air compressor, an oil pump and cooling provisions. The compressor creates pressure differences across the actuators and supplies pressure used to adjust pneumatic spring stiffness. Oil provides passive hydraulic valve latching and damping as a valve approaches its seat; it can also be used for compressor thermal management or returned-air cooling, depending on the installation. These details are documented in Freevalve’s 2020 cam-less valve-train article.
How a valve event is commanded
Freevalve’s public material does not disclose a complete control algorithm or a precise feedback-loop frequency. It does establish the hardware-level sequence in broad terms:

- The engine controller requests an operating result. Depending on speed, load and other conditions, the request can include a particular intake or exhaust timing, duration and lift.
- The TECS translates that request into actuator commands. It controls the pneumatic and hydraulic resources needed to move and latch the valve.
- The actuator opens the selected valve. Because each actuator is independently controlled, the intake valve and exhaust valve can receive different commands, and valves on different cylinders do not have to follow one shared cam profile.
- Sensors report valve position. High-time-resolution position sensing lets the system monitor the actual motion rather than relying only on a fixed mechanical shape.
- Pneumatic and hydraulic functions complete the event. Air pressure and adjustable spring stiffness influence motion; hydraulic latching and seating damping help hold the valve and control its landing.
This is a high-level description rather than a claim about undisclosed software internals. The sources name the sensors, actuators, TECS, compressor and oil system, but do not publish every real-time calculation or command path.
How can each cylinder control its valves independently?
Timing and duration are the main controls
Freevalve says intake and exhaust timing can be programmed independently. The controller can therefore choose when an intake event starts, when it ends and how long it lasts without waiting for a cam lobe to reach a fixed position. Freevalve presents timing-controlled duration as the primary way to regulate engine output. Lift is available as a second variable, used mainly to optimize parasitic losses rather than as the sole method of controlling load.
In practical terms, one cylinder can receive a different intake or exhaust event from another when the operating strategy calls for it. The system can also change events from one cycle to the next. That freedom is fundamentally different from a camshaft, whose profile repeats the same geometric motion whenever the shaft reaches the same angular position.

Throttle-less part-load operation
At light load, a conventional gasoline engine commonly uses a throttle plate to restrict incoming air. The pistons then work against intake-manifold vacuum, creating pumping losses. Freevalve’s Qoros demonstrator used late intake-valve closing and lift modulation to meter air through the valves themselves, allowing throttle-less part-load operation. Freevalve links that strategy to improved part-load fuel consumption.

The demonstrator still retained a throttle as a prototype safety device. Freevalve identified idle-speed stability and the need to provide vacuum for auxiliary systems as issues that would have to be solved before deleting the throttle in a serial-production application. “Camless” therefore does not automatically mean that every installation can remove every conventional intake component.
Internal EGR and combustion-cycle choices
Precisely timed valve events can retain or recirculate exhaust gas inside the cylinder, creating internal exhaust-gas recirculation without relying solely on a separate external EGR circuit. Freevalve also lists variable Miller- or Atkinson-style operation among the strategies enabled by independent valve control. Those cycles alter the effective compression and expansion process through valve timing; they are not separate engine types, but operating modes made easier to vary continuously.
Turbocharger and exhaust-flow management
Exhaust-valve events can be used to influence turbine flow and bypass flow. Freevalve identifies turbine and bypass-flow management as applications of its independently controlled exhaust valves. The capability can be considered alongside, rather than confused with, a conventional wastegate: the valve train itself becomes another way to shape the exhaust pulses and gas flow reaching the turbocharger system.

Cylinder deactivation and other strategies
Independent actuators also make cylinder deactivation possible by keeping selected valves closed when their cylinders are not required. The 2020 account distinguishes system generations: cylinder deactivation was not implemented in the earlier Qoros control system, but Freevalve describes it as available in the later system. It is therefore a documented capability of the later architecture, not proof that every earlier demonstrator used it.

What the Qoros demonstrator actually showed
Freevalve’s public figures come from company announcements about a Qoros engine. They are useful evidence of what the company reported, but they are not independent laboratory results, and the two fuel-consumption percentages below come from different publications and test contexts.
| Publication and context | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Freevalve, 2016 Qoros Qamfree announcement | 1.6-liter turbocharged engine; 230 hp and 320 Nm; 47% more power, 45% more torque and 15% lower fuel consumption than a conventional camshaft engine with similar specifications | Company-reported comparison for the driveable demonstrator, not an independently validated standardized test |
| Freevalve, 2020 Qoros 3 technical account | 14% fuel-consumption improvement at part load | A separate company-reported part-load result associated with throttle-less operation and a higher compression ratio |
| Qoros 3 technical account | Compression ratio increased from 9.0:1 to 10.5:1 | An engine-design change used with the flexible valve strategy; it does not mean every Freevalve engine uses these ratios |
| Qoros 3 technical account | More than 20 kg total engine-weight savings; approximately 50 mm lower and 70 mm shorter assembled engine | Packaging and mass figures claimed for that demonstrator configuration |
The 2016 announcement is Freevalve’s original Qoros release. It described the engine as intended for mass production and further fleet testing, but it did not identify a production vehicle. The 2020 account should not be read as independent confirmation of the earlier percentages, and neither publication establishes current production-vehicle availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The hardware trade-off: fewer camshaft parts, more support systems
Auxiliary hardware and packaging
Removing the camshaft does not remove the need for an actuator system. Pneumatic valve actuation requires an air compressor, control electronics and air plumbing. Hydraulic latching and damping require an oil supply, so the installation may need an oil pump, oil cooling or return-air cooling. Freevalve says the exact cooling requirements depend on the application.
Those components consume space and add interfaces that must be packaged around the cylinder head. A fair comparison must therefore count the complete system, not just compare a camshaft with an actuator on a drawing. The Qoros demonstrator’s claimed 20-plus-kilogram mass reduction and reduced engine dimensions show what Freevalve reported for one configuration, but they are not universal guarantees.

Idle, vacuum and fail-safe considerations
The Qoros prototype retained a throttle partly as a safety measure. Freevalve specifically names stable idle control and vacuum supply for auxiliary equipment as unresolved issues before a production vehicle could simply discard the throttle. These requirements illustrate why independent valve control is an engineering system, not a single replacement part.
What is not established publicly
Freevalve’s 2016 and 2020 publications do not provide independent durability testing, a complete actuator-control algorithm, a standardized apples-to-apples efficiency test, or a current list of production vehicles using the system. They also do not establish a consumer replacement-parts channel. Claims about universal reliability, emissions compliance or fuel savings would go beyond the evidence available here.
Freevalve versus a conventional camshaft
| Question | Conventional camshaft | Freevalve architecture |
|---|---|---|
| What fixes valve motion? | Cam-lobe geometry and mechanical timing to the crankshaft | Electronic commands executed by independent electro-hydraulic-pneumatic actuators |
| Can intake and exhaust events differ? | Only within the limits of the installed profiles, phasers and switching hardware | Yes; Freevalve says intake and exhaust timing can be programmed independently |
| Primary load-control method described by the system | Often a throttle, with cam timing and lift systems supplementing it | Valve timing and duration, with lift used as a secondary optimization variable |
| Additional support hardware | Mechanical drive, lubrication and conventional valve springs | TECS, air compressor, oil pump, sensors, supply rail, electronics and application-dependent cooling |
| Potential operating strategies | Constrained by mechanical profiles and phasing range | Throttle-less part-load control, internal EGR, turbine/bypass-flow management, Miller or Atkinson operation and cylinder deactivation, subject to implementation |
This comparison describes architecture, not a blanket efficiency or durability verdict. Results depend on the complete engine, calibration, friction, turbocharger, emissions system and test conditions.

Christian von Koenigsegg, identified in Freevalve’s 2016 announcement as Koenigsegg Automotive AB’s CEO and FreeValve AB’s board chairman, described the move toward mass production as a first step toward lower carbon-dioxide emissions. FreeValve AB CEO Urban Carlson said the technology had undergone years of testing and refinement. Those are company statements about development direction, not independent certification of a production engine.
Freevalve’s 2020 article says the company has pursued customer engine-development projects across several internal-combustion sectors and worked with customers on commercialization. That supports describing Freevalve as a technology developer working on partnerships. It does not establish that a current Koenigsegg road car, or any particular mass-market vehicle, is equipped with the system.
The practical answer
Koenigsegg’s Freevalve concept controls each cylinder without a camshaft by assigning valve motion to independently controlled actuators. Sensors and the Top End Control System coordinate pneumatic spring behavior, hydraulic latching and damping, while compressed air, oil and electrical signals supply the hardware. Because valve timing, duration and lift are commands rather than fixed cam geometry, the engine can pursue operating strategies that a conventional valve train can only approximate.
The benefit is flexibility: potentially lower pumping losses, cylinder-specific events, internal EGR, variable combustion cycles and more direct exhaust-flow management. The cost is a sophisticated package of compressors, pumps, electronics, cooling and calibration. The Qoros results demonstrate what Freevalve reported for historical prototypes; they should not be generalized into a guaranteed production-car outcome without comparable independent testing.
