That prototype-versus-production distinction is the fastest way to understand the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s four classes, but the differences in engineering, eligibility and race operations matter just as much.
IMSA’s four classes in one view
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship groups its cars into two broad families. Prototypes are designed specifically for competition, without a road-car model providing their basic architecture. Grand Touring cars begin with road-going production models and are converted into race cars under a common technical formula. IMSA’s official class overview describes that split and the four classes currently used in the championship: GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO and GTD.

That table is a class map, not a promise that one category will win every race. IMSA can adjust eligibility and specifications under its regulations, and the rules do not turn these labels into a universal horsepower, weight or lap-time ranking.
What makes GTP different from LMP2?
GTP is the premier prototype class
GTP sits at the top of IMSA’s prototype structure. IMSA describes it as the newest and most technologically advanced prototype class in the WeatherTech Championship. A GTP car is therefore built around the demands of the series’ leading prototype category rather than adapted from a production sports car.

“Top class” describes the category’s position in IMSA’s sporting and technical structure; it does not provide a single published number for every performance attribute. Car eligibility, technical specifications and balancing decisions are governed by the current rules rather than by the class name alone.
Most GTP cars use hybrid power, but not every one
Hybrid assistance is a defining feature of much of the GTP field. The accurate wording is most GTP cars, not all of them. IMSA’s class information identifies a non-hybrid Aston Martin entry, and the 2026 sporting regulations describe hybrid-system provisions applying to most GTP cars. A GTP badge by itself is not proof that every car in a race has an identical hybrid layout.
That distinction also prevents a common mistake: neither “prototype” nor “GTP” should be treated as a guarantee of a particular engine, battery capacity or electric-power figure. The 2026 sporting regulations contain the applicable hybrid and high-voltage provisions.

LMP2 cars are also purpose-built prototypes, but their identity comes from a more tightly defined constructor framework. They use closed cockpits and are developed by approved chassis constructors. That creates a different competitive environment from GTP: teams select from an approved LMP2 platform rather than creating an unrestricted top-class prototype concept.
LMP2 is not an IMSA-only design exercise. The cars are eligible in other global championships, including the FIA World Endurance Championship, so the class connects North American racing with an international prototype ecosystem. IMSA’s 2026 full-season field identified four LMP2 chassis makes—ORECA, Ligier, Dallara and Multimatic—although the exact manufacturers represented can change with each season.

GTP and LMP2 share a prototype identity, not one specification
Both classes have racing-only bodywork, enclosed cockpits and aerodynamic designs intended for endurance racing. They are nevertheless separate classes with separate eligibility frameworks. LMP2’s approved-constructor model and international eligibility do not make it a lower-powered version of one standard GTP car, and a GTP’s hybrid technology does not become an LMP2 requirement.

How GTD and GTD PRO relate
Both classes use FIA GT3-based cars
GTD and GTD PRO are grand touring categories, not prototypes. Their cars originate from road-going production models and race under the FIA GT3 specification. That shared basis is why a GTD PRO car can look fundamentally similar to a GTD car: both follow the same GT3-derived concept rather than the prototype architecture used by GTP and LMP2.
IMSA does not describe GTD PRO as a wholly different vehicle specification from GTD. The meaningful distinction is the class context—who the category is intended to accommodate and how teams and driver lineups are organized—not a claim that one class uses GT cars while the other uses something else.
GTD PRO is the factory-oriented GT class
IMSA describes GTD PRO as an opportunity for factory teams and driver lineups to compete. That makes it the class viewers usually associate with manufacturer-backed GT programs and professional driver combinations, while still retaining the FIA GT3 technical foundation.
“Factory” describes the team and driver-lineup context IMSA highlights; it should not be stretched into an assertion that every GTD PRO car has a unique engine, body shape or drivetrain unavailable to GTD. The technical starting point remains GT3.

GTD is the companion GT3 class
GTD is the other WeatherTech Championship class built around FIA GT3 cars. Because it is production-derived, its visual cues are familiar: recognizable silhouettes, front- or mid-engine layouts based on road cars, and bodywork that retains the identity of the underlying model even after extensive racing modifications.

Do not infer a hybrid system from “GTD,” “GTD PRO” or “GT3.” The class designation establishes the GT3-based rules framework, not a universal powertrain technology. Likewise, the GTD label does not mean a car is a lightly modified showroom vehicle; GT3 racing cars are purpose-prepared competition machines built from production-model foundations.
How the class split appears during a race
IMSA’s 2026 sporting regulations formally group GTP and LMP2 as prototypes and GTD PRO and GTD as Grand Touring classes. The regulations also use a separate GTP/GTD PRO split during safety-car procedures. That operational grouping helps officials manage the field when the race is neutralized; it is not a substitute for a detailed technical comparison.
In practical terms, a safety-car restart or caution procedure can treat the leading prototype and GT groups differently from the way a casual viewer might expect if all four classes were simply ranked by lap time. The class order seen on timing screens therefore reflects sporting procedures as well as the cars’ underlying performance.
What the 2026 entry numbers tell you—and what they do not
On October 9, 2025, IMSA announced 45 confirmed full-season entries for the 2026 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The announced breakdown was:

These are season-entry figures, not permanent class limits, guaranteed car counts at every event or measures of performance. A race-by-race grid can differ because of event eligibility, withdrawals, schedule choices and other changes.
IMSA separately described the 12-car LMP2 field as representing 11 teams, with ORECA, Ligier, Dallara and Multimatic chassis makes. The announcement’s context is useful for understanding the size and variety of the prototype field, but it does not establish a technical advantage for one constructor.
IMSA President John Doonan summarized the announcement this way: “Once again, the quality and quantity of cars and teams is on display for the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.” The statement is a description of the announced field, not a performance comparison between classes. IMSA’s 2026 rules and regulations index lists the WeatherTech Sporting Regulations dated June 17, 2026, and LMP2 and GTD technical regulations dated June 16, 2026. Those documents are the appropriate references when a question requires an exact technical specification, eligibility detail or sporting procedure.
The sporting regulations retain IMSA discretion over car eligibility and specifications. That matters because class descriptions are intentionally broader than a complete technical rulebook. Unless a current regulation supplies a directly comparable figure, it is not responsible to assign one universal horsepower, weight, cost, dimension or lap-time number to GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO or GTD.

How to identify the classes while watching
Start with the body shape
- Prototype appearance: A low, enclosed cockpit integrated into a purpose-built aerodynamic body points to GTP or LMP2.
- Production-car appearance: A recognizable road-car silhouette points to GTD PRO or GTD.
Use the timing graphic and class color
Broadcast graphics and timing screens are more reliable than trying to identify every technical detail from a camera angle. Once the class abbreviation appears, the architecture tells you what it means: GTP and LMP2 are prototypes; GTD PRO and GTD are GT3-based grand touring cars.
Do not identify a car by hybrid assumptions
A prototype does not automatically mean hybrid, and a GT3-based car does not automatically mean non-hybrid or hybrid. The hybrid caveat is specifically important in GTP, where most cars use hybrid powertrains but exceptions exist.
The practical bottom line
GTP is IMSA’s top prototype class and the category with the greatest concentration of current prototype technology, including hybrid systems in most entries. LMP2 is the other prototype class: a closed-cockpit, approved-constructor formula with eligibility beyond IMSA. GTD PRO and GTD are not prototype categories at all. They share FIA GT3-based, production-derived cars, with GTD PRO providing IMSA’s factory-team and factory-lineup context and GTD serving as the companion GT3 class.
Remembering those three distinctions—prototype versus production-based GT, GTP versus approved-constructor LMP2, and shared GT3 hardware across GTD PRO and GTD—will let you interpret the field accurately without treating a class name as a promise of one exact engine, hybrid system or performance figure.
