Hyundai Motor and Kia have developed a concept wheel-and-tire system with snow-chain-like modules that extend at the push of a button. The companies announced it in December 2023 as a development technology—not a retail product—and said a production decision would depend on further testing and regulatory reviews.
What is Hyundai and Kia’s built-in snow-chain concept?
It is a proposed wheel-and-tire assembly with shape-memory-alloy modules tucked into radial channels. Hyundai and Kia describe the modules as elements that can extend outward to contact the road and act like snow chains. The concept was announced on December 11, 2023, in the companies’ official announcement.
The system is intended to let a driver deploy chain-like traction without fitting conventional chains around a tire. That is the concept’s stated purpose, not a demonstrated performance comparison.
How do the modules deploy?
- Normal driving: The alloy modules sit in radial grooves in the wheel-and-tire assembly. They are compressed into an L shape and remain hidden from the road.
- Button activation: An electrical signal applies current to the shape-memory alloy.
- Extension: The alloy returns toward its original profile, forming a J shape and pushing each module outward until it contacts the road.
Hyundai and Kia say the deployed modules are designed to act like snow chains. The announcement describes the alloy’s return to its original shape as enabling repeated use, but also says durability and performance testing is needed before the companies decide whether to pursue mass production.

#1 Best Overall
- Worry-Free Self-Tightening Ratchets Provide Automatic Tightening And Centering
- Easy Installation And Removal In Minutes
- Do Not Exceed 30 Mph With These Chains On
- Diamond Pattern Cross Chain Provides A Smoother Ride And Superior Traction
- Meets Class "S" clearance requirements, even in light truck sizes
What benefits have Hyundai and Kia demonstrated?
The companies say the extended modules are intended to improve grip, stability and safety on snowy roads. The December 2023 announcement does not report quantified test results or independent validation, so those benefits should be understood as the system’s intended effects, not verified performance claims.
The announcement also says that if a tire wears down to the height of the modules, normally hidden modules may become visible and alert the driver to wear. This is a feature described for the concept, not an established tire-wear monitoring standard.

Can you buy these tires, and when might they be available?
The announcement does not establish retail availability or give a launch date. Hyundai and Kia said they would consider mass production after additional technical development, durability and performance testing, and regulatory reviews. Joon Mo Park, Head of Advanced Chassis Development Team, said: “This innovation, which will hopefully be introduced on Hyundai and Kia vehicles someday, reflects our commitment to turning advanced technologies into real-world solutions that benefit customers.”
The companies said the technology was patent-pending in South Korea and the United States when announced. The announcement provides no application numbers and does not establish the patents’ current status.

- Note-Chains should be fitted to tire before actual use. Fitment can be affected by age of tire, tire manufacturer and/or tread type
How does the concept compare with conventional snow chains?
| Consideration | Integrated concept | Conventional snow chains |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | The announcement does not establish a retail product or launch date. | An existing product category; availability and suitability depend on the vehicle and chain. |
| Deployment | Described as extending modules with a button. | Must be fitted to the vehicle’s tires. |
| Compatibility | Vehicle compatibility is not stated in the announcement. | Clearance and fit are vehicle-specific. Kia warns that chain hooks may contact vehicle components and come loose. |
| Performance evidence | No quantified performance results or independent validation are reported in the announcement. | No head-to-head comparison with the concept is provided in the reviewed sources. |
If you need traction equipment now, look for snow chains compatible with your vehicle and check your exact owner’s manual and local requirements before use. Kia’s owner’s manual guidance on snow tires and chains warns that hooks can contact vehicle components and come loose; the correct advice depends on the specific vehicle.
