Hyundai launched the Elantra LPi Hybrid in South Korea in July 2009, presenting it as the world’s first hybrid vehicle powered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The claim is specific: Hyundai described its system as the world’s first LPi hybrid, not the world’s first hybrid car. In Korea, the model was called the Avante Hybrid.
What was Hyundai’s LPG-electric hybrid?
The Elantra LPi Hybrid was a non-plug-in hybrid that combined a 1.6-liter LPG-injection engine with an electric motor and a hybrid battery. Hyundai unveiled it at the Seoul Motor Show in April 2009, then launched it in South Korea in July. Hyundai’s corporate history records the Korean-market Avante Hybrid from 2009 to 2013.
Hyundai called the system the world’s first LPi hybrid system. LPi refers to liquid petroleum injection; the distinction matters because this was an LPG-fueled hybrid, not the first hybrid vehicle of any kind. Hyundai’s vehicle history describes the Avante Hybrid as combining an LPG-powered hybrid engine and motor.
How did the hybrid system work?
The car did not plug in to recharge. Hyundai described the electric motor as auxiliary power for starting, acceleration and uphill driving. Its idle stop-and-go system switched off the engine when the car was stationary. The vehicle paired a 1.6-liter Gamma LPi engine with a lithium-ion polymer battery and hybrid continuously variable transmission (CVT).

| Measure | Hyundai’s 2009 figure |
|---|---|
| LPG fuel economy | 17.8 km/L |
| Gasoline-equivalent fuel economy | 22.3 km/L |
| Electric-motor output | 15 kW |
| CO₂ emissions | 99 g/km |
| CO₂ comparison with gasoline Elantra | 36% lower, according to Hyundai |
The gasoline-equivalent figure is Hyundai’s comparison, not a separate gasoline-fuel economy result. Likewise, the 36% emissions reduction is the company’s comparison with the gasoline Elantra, not a third-party lifecycle assessment. Hyundai’s earlier 2008 preview gave a CO₂ figure of 103 g/km; its later 2009 report lists 99 g/km, the figure shown here. The preview is available in Hyundai Motor Sweden’s 2008 announcement.

Hyundai announced the vehicle as a Korea-first launch. In July 2009, the company said it would be sold in Korea and that there were no immediate plans to export it. A contemporaneous launch announcement was republished by The Auto Channel. Hyundai’s historical record dates the Avante Hybrid to 2009–2013; the available sources establish that past production, not present-day new-car availability.
