The driver-facing process is short—pay, connect the nozzle, and fill—but station compatibility and live availability matter more than a static map pin.
For stations in the United States and Canada, use the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) hydrogen locator. California drivers should also check the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership (H2FCP) map and its Station Operational Status System (SOSS) before leaving.

What happens inside a hydrogen refueling station?
A station’s job is to move hydrogen from its supply system into a vehicle’s fuel tanks at the pressure and connection type that vehicle is designed to accept. Hydrogen may be delivered to the site or held in on-site storage. Station equipment then conditions the gas and sends it through a dispenser and nozzle to a compatible fuel-cell vehicle.
The equipment is automated, but the process is not universal across every hydrogen vehicle. A nozzle can be physically present while the dispenser is intended for a different vehicle class or pressure category. Check the vehicle’s fuel label and the station’s instructions before attempting to start a fill.

Compressed gas, not a liquid fuel
Public hydrogen stations dispense compressed gaseous hydrogen. That makes the dispenser more comparable to a conventional fuel pump in the driver’s experience than to a battery charger: the vehicle is connected to a nozzle, and gas flows into its storage tanks until the fill sequence ends or the vehicle reaches its programmed limit.
What H70 and H35 mean
H2FCP identifies H70 as the class generally used by passenger vehicles and H35 as a class used by larger vehicles. Treat those labels as pressure-class designations, not as a guarantee that every vehicle can use either dispenser. The H2FCP page renders the pressure unit as “mPa”; because that notation should be verified against the vehicle maker or an applicable standards source, use the exact designation shown on your vehicle and at the station rather than converting it yourself.
A passenger fuel-cell car may therefore need an H70-capable dispenser, while a larger vehicle may be designed for H35. If a station has several dispensers, read each label and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.

H2FCP describes the public process in three basic actions: pay by card, attach the nozzle, and fill. The exact screen prompts and payment arrangements can differ by site, so follow the dispenser display and confirm current details in the station’s live listing.
- Confirm the station and dispenser. Make sure the site is open to the public, the dispenser is operational, and its pressure class matches the vehicle. A station shown on a map is not proof that it is currently dispensing fuel.
- Park within the marked fueling position. Turn off the vehicle as directed by the station and review any posted safety instructions before opening the fuel door.
- Start payment or authorization. H2FCP’s public description says to pay by card. Use the payment method accepted at that station, as shown on the dispenser or in the current listing.
- Remove and attach the nozzle. Take the compatible nozzle from its holder and connect it firmly to the vehicle’s receptacle. Do not force a connection or use a nozzle whose label does not match the vehicle.
- Begin the fill sequence. Press the dispenser’s start control and remain near the vehicle while the automated system checks the connection and transfers compressed hydrogen. Keep hands clear of the connection while gas is flowing.
- End the fill and stow the nozzle. Wait for the dispenser to indicate completion, release the nozzle according to its instructions, return it to the holder, and close the vehicle’s fuel door. Retain the payment receipt if one is offered.
If the dispenser stops before completion, displays an incompatibility message, or cannot authorize payment, follow the on-screen stop procedure and contact the operator listed for that station. Do not repeatedly reconnect a nozzle that reports a fault.

How long does hydrogen refueling take?
H2FCP says a passenger vehicle generally fills in about five minutes. That is a broad source estimate, not a guaranteed time for every vehicle or station. The actual wait can be longer when another vehicle is fueling, when a station has a queue, or when equipment is temporarily operating at reduced capacity.
Vehicle tank size, the dispenser’s pressure class, station design, ambient conditions, and the amount of hydrogen already in the tank can all affect the cycle. Because the available information does not establish a universal fill-time test across models and stations, plan around the possibility of a longer stop rather than treating five minutes as a schedule promise.
How stations are designed for safety
Hydrogen stations are designed and installed to applicable safety codes and standards. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center notes that many hydrogen safety codes draw on practices from the chemical and aerospace industries and identifies NFPA 2 as a harmonized national standard for hydrogen vehicle infrastructure.
Automatic protective systems
H2FCP describes flame detectors and gas sensors that can activate protective systems when they detect a fire or significant leak. Depending on the event, those systems can isolate storage tanks, stop hydrogen flow, or safely vent hydrogen during an extreme fire. These are layers of protection built into the station; they are not a promise that an incident is impossible.
Manual emergency stops
Stations also place manual emergency-stop controls in strategic locations. If you see a serious leak, fire, damaged equipment, or another immediate hazard, move away from the dispenser and use the emergency procedure posted at the site when it is safe to do so. Follow instructions from station personnel and emergency responders.

Where can I find a hydrogen refueling station?
United States and Canada: AFDC locator
The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center provides a Hydrogen Fueling Station Locations locator for the United States and Canada. AFDC describes its broader station tool as searchable for public and private hydrogen sites. Use the access filters carefully: a fleet or private station may appear in a database but not be available to an ordinary retail driver.

California: H2FCP map and SOSS
California has the largest concentration of U.S. hydrogen stations. H2FCP provides a station map and its Station Operational Status System (SOSS). H2FCP says SOSS supplies real-time station-availability data, making it the appropriate check immediately before a trip.
California Energy Commission dashboard
The California Energy Commission’s station dashboard is useful for network counts and definitions. It is not the same thing as a live pump-status service: the commission directs users to the operational-status system for real-time information. Use the dashboard to understand the network, then use SOSS or the current station listing to decide whether a particular stop is usable now.
How to check whether a station is actually open
Before setting out, verify four separate facts. They answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.
- Location: Is the station on your route and at the address shown in the locator?
- Access: Is it public retail, or restricted to a fleet, agency, or other authorized users?
- Compatibility: Does it offer the pressure class and connector required by your vehicle?
- Current status: Does the live listing show the station as available now?
Construction plans, funded projects, and a station’s appearance on a map do not establish that it is dispensing hydrogen today. The official sources do not establish current hours, prices, queue times, or payment options for each individual station. Confirm those details in the live listing or directly with the operator.

What the published network numbers mean
Hydrogen-station counts vary because agencies use different dates and definitions. The following snapshots should not be added together or read as a single live total.
| Source and date | What it reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| DOE AFDC, 2024 | 54 open retail hydrogen stations in the United States; most were in California and one was in Hawaii; more than 20 additional stations were in planning or construction. | A dated national snapshot, not a 2026 operating count. |
| H2FCP, September 8, 2026 | 42 California stations available and 13 unavailable; 4 retail stations in construction, 18 in permitting, 9 proposed, and 76 funded but not in development. | A California status snapshot with separate development categories. |
| California Energy Commission and California Air Resources Board report, 2026 | 50 California stations open to the public and 11 temporarily non-operational as of September 2, 2025. Average availability over the preceding year was approximately 60 percent. | A retrospective operating and availability analysis, not a promise that every listed station is open now. |
| CEC dashboard update, June 10, 2026 | California data as of March 31, 2026, updated quarterly. An open retail station is defined as open to the public for hydrogen retail sale; planned and temporarily non-operational stations are counted separately. | Use the definitions and “as of” date when comparing this dashboard with another source. |
The 2026 California report estimated that average availability could serve approximately 34,300 fuel-cell electric vehicles, compared with 14,128 light-duty fuel-cell vehicles registered in California as of April 2025. Those figures are statewide estimates. Registrations and fueling access are geographically concentrated, so statewide capacity does not mean that every driver has a convenient station.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why hydrogen availability can change quickly
H2FCP reported on April 13, 2026, that several California stations were unavailable after a gaseous-hydrogen supply disruption that began in February 2026. The update also noted unusually high demand at stations that remained in operation. H2FCP said SOSS was the most current status source.
This episode illustrates why a route plan should include a status check shortly before departure and, where practical, an alternative fueling point. A station count can remain unchanged while one unavailable site makes a particular corridor impractical.
Planning a trip around hydrogen stations
- Map the full route. Identify every realistic station along the drive rather than assuming the nearest map result is open.
- Check public access and compatibility. Filter out private or fleet-only locations and confirm the vehicle’s required pressure class.
- Check live status on the day of travel. In California, use SOSS; elsewhere in the United States and Canada, use the current AFDC listing and any operator status information it provides.
- Allow for variability. A five-minute fill estimate does not include a queue or an outage. Leave time for a longer cycle and verify the next available option before committing to a low-fuel route.
- Save operator contact details. If the dispenser is marked unavailable or fails during authorization, the station operator can confirm whether the issue is temporary and whether another dispenser is functioning.
Common problems and what to do
The station appears on the map but is closed
Check the live operational-status service, not only the map pin or an older directory entry. If the status is unavailable or stale, treat the station as unconfirmed and choose another verified stop.

The nozzle or dispenser is incompatible
Compare the vehicle’s fuel-door label and owner information with the dispenser’s H70 or H35 designation. Do not force the connector or attempt to bypass an interlock. A different vehicle class may require a different dispenser.
Payment does not authorize
Follow the dispenser’s displayed instructions and use only the payment methods currently accepted at that site. Because payment options are not established uniformly across the network, verify them in the live listing or with the operator before relying on a station.
A station is available but has a long queue
Availability does not reveal queue length. If another station on the route is confirmed open and compatible, compare the additional driving distance with the expected wait and the vehicle’s remaining range.
The practical answer for drivers
Hydrogen refueling is a compressed-gas transfer into a compatible fuel-cell vehicle. The driver normally pays, connects the correct nozzle, starts the fill, and waits for the automated cycle to finish; H2FCP’s general estimate for a passenger car is about five minutes.
Finding a usable station requires more than searching for a location. Use AFDC for the United States and Canada, H2FCP’s map and SOSS in California, and the California Energy Commission dashboard for dated network definitions and counts. Confirm public access, vehicle compatibility, and live operational status immediately before traveling, because historical counts and construction plans cannot tell you whether a dispenser is open at the moment you need it.
