What is Honda S+ Shift?
S+ Shift is Honda’s power-unit control technology for e:HEV hybrids. Its Step Shift Control changes engine speed and drive force in steps during acceleration and deceleration, aiming to make power delivery feel more like a stepped transmission. Sports Adaptive Control adjusts power delivery and shift scheduling according to driver input and driving conditions. In some situations, Honda says the system can briefly reduce drive-motor output to imitate the feel of a downshift.

Honda announced the technology in December 2024 as a way to add a more engaging shift experience to its motor-driven e:HEV system. Its announcement and subsequent Prelude launch release describe simulated shifts, not the addition of a conventional gearbox.
Does the Prelude have an eight-speed transmission?
No. Honda says the Prelude’s system provides eight virtual gears, tuned for its 2.0-liter hybrid system. These are simulated ratios and shift behavior controlled by the power unit; they are not eight physical gears in a mechanical transmission. Honda’s S+ Shift technology overview says the top virtual gear is close to the ratio used when the engine directly drives the wheels, which is intended to help the transition between Hybrid mode and Engine mode feel smooth.

Honda describes the sensation as similar to a stepped transmission and, on its technology page, DCT-like. That is the manufacturer’s characterization of the intended feel, not evidence that the Prelude behaves identically to a dual-clutch transmission, a traditional automatic or a manual.
What changes when S+ Shift is on?
Paddle shifters select virtual gears
With S+ Shift off, the Prelude’s steering-wheel paddles select regenerative-braking levels. With S+ Shift on, they become controls for selecting virtual gears, letting the driver request shifts from the wheel. Honda identifies paddle-operated virtual shifting as a first for an e:HEV model.

Cabin sound follows engine speed
Active Sound Control plays engine-speed-synchronized sound through the cabin speakers. Honda says the Prelude’s tuning makes engine sound more prominent over a broader rev range. The sound is therefore part of the designed cabin experience; it should not be taken as a guarantee that every audible shift cue is unmodified exhaust noise.
The meter shows a tachometer and selected gear
When S+ Shift is active, Honda says the digital meter changes its power meter to a tachometer and displays the selected virtual gear and shift guidance. This gives the driver visual cues that match the simulated shifts.

How does S+ Shift differ by drive mode?
Honda lists S+ Shift as selectable in Sport, GT, Comfort and Individual settings. Honda says the intended character is more exciting in Sport and more refined in Comfort. The available manufacturer descriptions do not provide an independent measured comparison of how strongly those modes differ in driving feel.

S+ Shift adds stepped engine-speed and drive-force changes to the e:HEV power delivery, then coordinates paddle inputs, engine-speed-linked cabin sound and meter graphics to make those changes easier to feel and follow. Whether that experience is more engaging is subjective: Honda’s published descriptions explain how the system is designed to work, but do not quantify a change in driver perception or establish an independent road-test verdict.

Honda’s English launch release concerns Japan and announced sales beginning September 5, 2025. Availability, specifications and trim details can differ by market. Honda’s Japanese technology page, updated June 4, 2026, lists both Prelude and Civic e:HEV RS; that does not establish that every vehicle using S+ Shift has the Prelude’s exact tuning.
