It was intended to help engineers explore architectures, compare options and move toward implementation before building physical prototypes.
What Mentor’s Volcano VSA was designed to do
Mentor positioned VSA for an AUTOSAR-based workflow spanning architectural exploration through implementation. Engineers could use it to evaluate vehicle electronic and software architectures and bring verification work earlier in development. The 2009 announcement identified FlexRay, CAN and LIN as supported in-vehicle networks.

That scope makes VSA an architecture-design tool, not simply a CAN interface or a general-purpose development board. The announcement described a way to reason about vehicle-system design across networks and software architecture; it did not establish a standalone market-adoption or performance figure.

How the Volcano AUTOSAR offering developed
| Date | Announcement | What it added or established |
|---|---|---|
| April 2009 | Mentor Graphics announced Volcano VSA. | An AUTOSAR-enabled vehicle-system architecture tool supporting FlexRay, CAN and LIN. |
| 2011 | Mentor and Mecel announced a combined AUTOSAR 4.x solution. | The offering paired Mentor Volcano VSTAR and VSB with Mecel Picea basic software, runtime environment (RTE) and configuration tools for AUTOSAR versions 4.0.2 and 4.0.3. |
| February 4, 2015 | Mentor announced Automotive Ethernet support in Volcano VSA. | VSA addressed timing analysis across mixed CAN, FlexRay and Ethernet networks, with applications including ADAS, vehicle backbones, Audio Video Bridging (AVB) and Diagnostics over Internet Protocol (DoIP). The announcement covered AUTOSAR and non-AUTOSAR ECUs. |
| April 21, 2015 | Mentor said Aisin Seiki and subsidiaries had standardized on Volcano VSx design tools. | The stated purpose was to support an AUTOSAR-based design process across Aisin’s automotive-manufacturer network. |
| 2017 | Mentor promoted Volcano VSTAR under its Mentor Safe ISO 26262 qualification program. | The program covered the VSTAR AUTOSAR operating system and basic-software stack. |
| July 23, 2021 | Siemens Digital Industries Software described the post-acquisition product lineage. | Siemens said the product line continued as Capital VSTAR, comprising the Capital VSTAR Integrator desktop integration tool, a basic-software stack and Capital VSTAR Virtualizer for virtual validation. |
Is Mentor Volcano still available, and what replaced it?
Mentor Graphics is a historical product name here: Siemens acquired Mentor Graphics and, in a July 2021 account, described continuing the AUTOSAR product line as Capital VSTAR. That account is evidence of a successor lineage, not confirmation of present-day availability, licensing, supported AUTOSAR revisions or current partner-program terms.
#1 Best Overall
For a legacy Volcano project, the practical next step is to ask Siemens or the relevant supplier to confirm the supported migration path for that specific project and release. The cited historical announcements do not specify a universal conversion process or establish that every Volcano configuration maps directly to a current Capital VSTAR offering.

- Volcano VSA: The vehicle-system architecture-design tool announced in 2009; its 2015 announcement added Automotive Ethernet support.
- Volcano VSTAR and VSB: Products in the broader Mentor offering, paired with Mecel Picea components in the 2011 AUTOSAR 4.x solution.
- Capital VSTAR: The successor product family Siemens described in 2021, including integration, basic-software and virtual-validation components.
These names refer to related parts of an evolving tool and software portfolio, not interchangeable labels for one identical product. The historical announcements establish development of an AUTOSAR toolchain, but they do not provide an independent adoption percentage or market-size estimate.
