The 2026 Honda Prelude uses two motors with different jobs: a traction motor drives the wheels, while a generator motor is linked to the engine. Most of the time, the car is propelled electrically; the engine can generate electricity for the traction motor or battery, and at high-speed cruising it can connect mechanically to the wheels. Regenerative braking also recovers some energy. The Prelude is a self-charging hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid.
What the two motors do
“Two-motor” describes two distinct roles, not two motors that both continuously propel the car. The drive, or traction, motor is connected to the driveshaft and supplies wheel torque. The generator motor is connected to the engine: it can start the engine and generate electricity when the engine is running. Honda says the generator acts as a motor to start the engine and is otherwise used as a generator in this system. Honda’s Prelude feature guide explains the model’s system; Honda Global’s e:HEV overview describes the broader operating architecture.

How power reaches the wheels
EV Drive: the traction motor propels the car
In EV Drive, the traction motor drives the wheels using electricity from the battery. Honda describes motor drive as suitable for most daily driving situations and notes that the Prelude’s motor response is available from 0 rpm. This does not mean the engine can never run during a trip; the system changes modes according to driving conditions.

Hybrid Drive: the engine generates electricity
When the system uses Hybrid Drive, the engine turns the generator motor. Electricity from the generator can feed the traction motor, which continues to propel the car, and Honda says the engine can also charge the battery. In this mode, engine power is being used to make electricity rather than necessarily driving the wheels mechanically.

High-speed cruising: the engine can drive the wheels directly
At high-speed cruising, Honda says a lock-up clutch can connect engine output directly to the wheels. This provides a mechanical route for engine power, rather than requiring the traction motor to propel the car at every speed. It is an additional operating mode in the hybrid system, not evidence of a conventional multi-gear transmission.
How the battery gets energy
The Prelude’s battery can receive electricity from engine-driven generation and regenerative braking. When the car decelerates, the traction motor works as a generator, converting some of the car’s kinetic energy into electrical energy for the battery. Steering-wheel deceleration selectors let the driver adjust regenerative braking, according to Honda’s Prelude feature guide. This is not a plug-in charging arrangement: the cited operating description covers energy generated by the engine and recovered while driving.

2026 U.S. Prelude power and efficiency figures
Honda Automobiles lists the following figures for the 2026 Prelude in the United States. Engine output, motor output and total system output are separate ratings; do not add the engine and motor horsepower figures to calculate system output.
| Specification | 2026 U.S. figure |
|---|---|
| Total system output | 200 hp |
| Engine output | 141 hp at 6,000 rpm |
| Drive-motor output | 181 hp at 5,000–6,000 rpm |
| Motor torque | 232 lb-ft at 0–2,000 rpm |
| EPA fuel economy | 46 mpg city / 41 mpg highway / 44 mpg combined |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
These are U.S.-market specifications published on Honda Automobiles’ 2026 Prelude specifications page. They should not be assumed to describe every market’s version. Honda’s global e:HEV explanation describes how the system operates, not a universal power rating.

How the hybrid system fits the Prelude
Honda pairs the hybrid powertrain with high-performance chassis hardware from the Civic Type R, according to the 2026 Prelude press kit. The powertrain’s operating logic remains distinct from that chassis connection: the traction motor provides electric drive, the engine can generate electricity, and a clutch allows direct engine drive during high-speed cruising.
