The Testa Rossa J is an officially licensed, 75%-scale electric tribute to Ferrari’s 1957 250 Testa Rossa—not an unauthorised replica. Ferrari’s permission is explicit on the manufacturer’s page; the fuller story of archive access, design work and prototype review comes from published reporting and an attributed account by the car’s original builder.
What “Ferrari’s blessing” means
The current maker, Hedley Studios, states that the Testa Rossa J is “hand built in the UK under license” and that use of the Ferrari brand is with Ferrari’s permission. The company was previously known as The Little Car Company, the name used in much of the early reporting. Hedley Studios’ product page is the clearest public confirmation that this is a licensed Ferrari-branded product rather than an unauthorised copy.
That establishes permission to build and brand the car, but it does not disclose the licence’s contractual terms or Ferrari’s internal approval records. The more detailed account of how the collaboration worked comes from Top Gear’s December 2021 report.
How Ferrari contributed to development
Top Gear reported that Ferrari Classiche provided original design drawings, Ferrari Centro Stile helped develop the two-person seat, and the car’s paint and leather were matched to materials used on contemporary Ferraris. Ferrari badges were supplied from Italy, and Ferrari test drivers signed off the suspension and final setup. Top Gear also reported that Ferrari reviewed a prototype and that its main request was to remove The Little Car Company badges.

That account describes involvement beyond lending a name, but it is Top Gear’s reporting—not a published Ferrari approval document. In a February 2022 Auto Italia interview, founder Ben Hedley recalled: “Ferrari was on board with the idea straightaway.” He also said Ferrari allowed the company to scan technical drawings and that “the chassis is identical.” Those are Hedley’s statements as quoted by the magazine, not direct quotations from Ferrari.
What the Testa Rossa J is—and what it is not
The Testa Rossa J is a hand-built, electric car at 75% scale, based on drawings from Ferrari’s historic archive. Its inspiration is the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, a sports-racing family whose evolutions achieved four overall Le Mans victories between 1958 and 1962, according to RM Sotheby’s 2026 listing. That record belongs to the family across its development, not one unchanged car.

It is not a full-size 250 Testa Rossa, nor is it a conventional child’s battery toy. Hedley Studios says production is limited to 299 cars. Its current product page, retrieved October 8, 2026, lists these specifications:
| Specification | Current Hedley Studios listing |
|---|---|
| Scale | 75% |
| Power | 12 kW |
| Battery | 5.4 kWh |
| Weight | 300 kg |
| Dimensions | 3.1 × 1.15 × 0.75 metres; listed dimensions exclude additional fixtures |
| Driving modes | Novice, Comfort, Sport and Race |
| Top speed | 50 mph / 80 km/h; may vary by territory due to local laws |
| Estimated charging time | 4–6 hours |
| Production | Limited to 299 cars |
The current page does not state a driving range. Earlier launch coverage should be read as dated reporting, not silently substituted for today’s listed specification: Top Gear’s August 2021 article described Race mode at over 60 km/h (37 mph) and range of up to 90 km (56 miles), while Automobile Club d’Italia reported a 90 km range and 60 km/h maximum in December 2021. Top Gear’s 2021 launch coverage and ACI’s December 2021 article therefore give figures that differ from the current manufacturer-listed top speed.

What the approval story does—and does not—prove
The public evidence supports a clear distinction: Hedley Studios states that Ferrari licenses the car and permits the brand; Top Gear reports specific Ferrari contributions and prototype feedback; and Ben Hedley described the company’s access to technical drawings. None of those sources publishes the licence agreement or a direct Ferrari account of the arrangement, so the contract’s exact scope should not be inferred.
For buyers or collectors, the official product page is the place to check current specifications and enquire with the maker. A single auction result is not a list price: RM Sotheby’s recorded one Paris 2026 sale at €204,000, which establishes that transaction only—not a standard new-car price, general valuation or investment outlook.
