How the Proposed F1 Points System Would Have Changed the 2024 Standings

The FIA rejected a proposal to award Grand Prix points through 12th place, so it did not affect the official 2024 F1 standings. Published comparisons cover only the season’s first five rounds, not a complete hypothetical final table.

It did not change the official 2024 standings: the FIA rejected the proposed expansion of Grand Prix points to 12th place in July 2024. The FIA’s final classification therefore stands under the existing rules, with Max Verstappen champion on 429 points and Lando Norris second on 349. A complete recalculation of the finished season under the proposal is not available in the cited comparisons, so there is no reliable final hypothetical table to report.

What was the proposed F1 points system?

In April 2024, the Formula 1 Commission discussed extending Grand Prix points from the top 10 finishers to the top 12. The reported proposed scale was:

25-18-15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1

That would keep the points for first through sixth unchanged, increase the awards for eighth through tenth, and give one point to 12th and two to 11th. The scale was reported by PlanetF1; contemporary coverage from Motorsport.com also examined the suggested change.

The FIA said on April 25 that further analysis was needed before a proposal would return to the Commission in July. On July 23, it announced that members had unanimously agreed to make no changes to championship-point distribution. The proposal was not adopted, and the 2024 championship was not scored under it. Why isn’t there a final hypothetical 2024 table?

The FIA’s published final classification records the championship under the rules actually used; it does not include a counterfactual recalculation. The available media comparisons applied the proposed scale to results after the first five rounds, not to the completed 24-round season. Those snapshots cannot establish how the final drivers’ or constructors’ standings would have looked.

A defensible season-long calculation would need to apply clearly stated assumptions to every relevant result, including sprint points, fastest-lap bonuses, shortened-race scoring and tie-break rules. The proposal was reported as extending fastest-lap bonus eligibility to the extra two finishing positions as well, so a calculation would also have to specify whether that change was included. The relevant provisions appear in the FIA’s 2024 Sporting Regulations, Issue 5.

What did the early-season comparisons show?

More points for midfield finishers

After the first five rounds, PlanetF1’s application of the proposed scale found Haas to be an early beneficiary: Nico Hulkenberg would have gained eight points and Kevin Magnussen four at that point. These are gains in that dated snapshot, not their hypothetical full-season totals.

Some lower-order positions could shift

Motorsport.com’s comparison after five race weekends found no change to the leading driver or constructor positions in that snapshot, but Haas would have moved ahead of RB in the constructors’ standings. That early result illustrates how extra points for lower-finishing places could affect midfield order; it does not predict the final 2024 table.

What were the official 2024 standings?

Under the rules that remained in force, the FIA’s final classification shows Verstappen first with 429 points and Norris second with 349. These are official totals, not estimates under the rejected proposal. The complete baseline is in the FIA’s 2024 classifications.
