How HDR Addresses Camera Challenges in Modern Driver-Assistance Systems

HDR helps automotive cameras retain detail across bright and dark scenes, but sensor specifications are not whole-vehicle safety results.

In automotive driver-assistance and automated-driving cameras, high dynamic range (HDR) helps preserve image detail when a scene contains both very bright and very dark areas—for example, at a tunnel exit, in direct sun, or at night under bright headlights. HDR is an imaging capability, not a guarantee of vehicle safety or autonomous performance; the camera is one part of a larger perception system.

What HDR solves in an automotive camera

A camera has to record useful information across a wide range of light levels. In one frame, the road ahead may be shadowed while the sky or a reflective surface is intensely bright. Without enough dynamic range, bright regions can wash out and dark regions can lose detail. onsemi identifies tunnel exits, direct sunlight, and nighttime scenes with strong headlights as examples of challenging conditions in its ADAS System Solution Guide.

HDR combines or otherwise captures image information across different exposure levels so that more of the scene remains usable. The specific method matters: resolution, frame rate, exposure strategy, and processing all affect how a sensor performs in a camera system. A sensor’s published dynamic-range figure is a component specification, not a measure of how well an entire vehicle detects hazards.

Why LED flicker is a separate camera challenge

LED road signs and vehicle lights can pulse. If a camera exposure does not capture the relevant part of that pulse cycle, the recorded image may show flicker or fail to capture signal information consistently. HDR alone does not automatically solve this timing problem.

onsemi describes its Super-Exposure technology as capturing a complete LED pulse cycle during one exposure, with the aim of reducing missed pulses while avoiding saturation. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of its design, not independent comparative evidence that it outperforms other approaches.

Forward road cameras: one manufacturer example

For the forward-facing use case, onsemi’s guide lists the AR0823AT image sensor. Its published specifications include 8.3 megapixels (3840 × 2160) and up to 60 frames per second at full resolution in single-exposure mode, compared with up to 40 frames per second in HDR mode. The guide lists up to 150 dB dynamic range for dual-exposure HDR with LED flicker mitigation, and greater than 120 dB flicker-free HDR in single-exposure mode.

Our cus-tomer care, details provided in the box, will assist your problems

These are specifications in the manufacturer’s guide, whose publication date is not shown there. They are not results from an independent road test or a matched comparison of complete driving systems. Frame rate and dynamic range should be considered alongside the camera’s exposure behavior, processing, and integration into the vehicle.

In-cabin cameras have a different HDR job

Driver and occupant monitoring cameras face a different scene from forward road cameras: they need to image people inside the cabin across changing daylight and low-light conditions. On October 7, 2025, OMNIVISION announced the OX05C, describing it as a 5-megapixel, back-side illuminated, global-shutter HDR sensor for driver and occupant monitoring. The announcement says its HDR is intended to handle bright cabin conditions, while 940 nm near-infrared sensitivity is intended to help in low light; it also describes on-chip RGB-IR separation.

  • EASY INSTALLATION & OPERATION: This dash camera is plug-and-play—simply mount it on the windshield, connect the power, and you're ready to go. The intuitive display and user-friendly button layout make daily operation effortless for anyone.

OMNIVISION’s announcement attributes the device’s performance claims to the company and its partners. It quotes Dr. Paul Wu, OMNIVISION’s director of automotive product marketing, saying the driver’s face is not washed out in bright light and that the camera can detect distraction or drowsiness. Smart Eye’s vice president of innovations and strategic partnerships, Detlef Wilke, said the sensor gives its algorithms consistency from bright sunlight to near darkness. Those statements describe vendor and partner claims, not independent verification.

How to compare HDR camera approaches

AR0823AT and OX05C are examples for different automotive camera roles, not interchangeable products in a like-for-like performance contest. onsemi’s guide and OMNIVISION’s announcement do not provide matched tests under equivalent conditions. For an engineering or system-design comparison, examine the intended camera location and task, HDR mode and stated dynamic range, LED-flicker behavior, resolution and HDR frame rate, low-light or near-infrared capability, and integration requirements such as output streams and processing.

  • 5GHz Wi-Fi & App Integration: Share videos easily via Wi-Fi using the mobile app for both iOS and Android devices. This feature allows for quick video downloads and sharing on your preferred platforms.

Use the numbers in their proper context: a manufacturer’s sensor specification does not establish real-world detection accuracy, and a sensor feature does not show that a vehicle function depends on that camera alone. onsemi’s system diagram includes cameras alongside radar, LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors, processing, and vehicle interfaces.

HDR does not change the driver’s responsibility

HDR can help a camera retain image information in difficult lighting, but the available product specifications and announcements do not establish that HDR alone produces a measurable safety improvement or makes a vehicle autonomous. Driver-assistance functions operate within a broader vehicle system. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes features such as lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking (AEB), and adaptive cruise control, while emphasizing driver responsibility. For Level 0–2 systems, drivers must remain responsible and attentive even when Level 2 support provides continuous steering and acceleration or braking assistance. NHTSA states: “You, as the driver, are responsible for driving the vehicle. All vehicle features are assistive and do not operate the vehicle. You must steer, brake, and accelerate.” See its Driver Assistance Technologies guidance.

NHTSA’s page reports 39,254 U.S. road deaths in 2024; that count is not evidence that HDR or any particular driver-assistance system would have prevented those deaths. Likewise, market forecasts are not proof of camera performance: AMD’s current ADAS overview attributes a forecast of 325 million global automotive-camera units by 2026 to IHS and a forecast of 130 million forward-camera units by 2026 to TechInsights. These are forecasts, not achieved totals.
