GM President Mark Reuss drove a 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 to a reported two-way average of 233 mph at a closed-course testing oval in Papenburg, Germany. Chevrolet announced the result on October 15, 2024, describing it as a top-speed record among current production cars priced under $1 million—not an unrestricted record for every car.
What happened at Papenburg?
Reuss made the run at the High-Speed Oval Track at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany. Chevrolet’s account describes a two-way average speed of 233 mph. That average is different from citing a single peak-speed reading: it summarizes runs in both directions rather than treating the fastest pass alone as the result.
Chevrolet said the ZR1 reached 233 mph at redline in sixth gear. An engineer rode in the passenger seat and analyzed vehicle data in real time. The result and those details are manufacturer-reported; independent third-party certification of this specific run was not established. Chevrolet’s October 15, 2024 announcement provides the event account.
How was the record claim qualified?
Chevrolet called the result a top-speed record unrivaled by any current production car priced under $1 million. That wording matters: it is the manufacturer’s comparison within a stated price bracket, not proof of an all-time, all-vehicle world record. The run took place on a closed high-speed oval, not on a public road.

What ZR1 configuration made the run?
Chevrolet reported that the car was a coupe with a standard chassis and aero package, a standard spoiler with a short wicker, carbon-fiber ground effects, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and aluminum wheels. Chevrolet also said the car used Top Speed Mode, a setting developed exclusively for closed-course use that adjusts chassis control systems for maximum speed. The described setup is useful context for the result; it should not be confused with a claim that every ZR1 configuration or road setting will achieve the same speed.
What powers the 2025 Corvette ZR1?
Chevrolet lists the ZR1’s 5.5-liter twin-turbo LT7 V8 at 1,064 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, per SAE guidelines, and 828 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm. These are manufacturer-published output figures announced with the car. Chevrolet’s July 25, 2024 ZR1 announcement covers the model and its specifications.

What did the 2025 ZR1 cost when Chevrolet announced pricing?
On January 9, 2025, Chevrolet announced a U.S. starting MSRP of $175,195, including destination freight charge, and said orders would open. This is a dated manufacturer MSRP, not a current dealer quote, transaction price, or confirmation of present inventory or ordering availability. Chevrolet’s January 9, 2025 pricing announcement gives the original figure.

No. Chevrolet described Top Speed Mode as exclusively for closed-course use, and the Papenburg result came from a high-speed testing oval. The 233-mph figure is not guidance for public-road driving; road conditions, laws, traffic and vehicle setup are entirely different.
