The engine may suffer internal damage that can lead to loss of propulsion while driving.
Which vehicles are included in GM recall 25V-274?
GM’s filing identifies certain 2021–2024 vehicles equipped with the 6.2L V8 gasoline engine, RPO L87. The suspect engine production window was March 1, 2021, through May 31, 2024. GM used manufacturing records to identify the vehicles and VINs covered by the campaign; a matching model and year alone does not establish eligibility. Check the VIN, because vehicles or engines outside the identified production window are not automatically included. (GM’s NHTSA recall filing)

To confirm whether a specific vehicle has an open recall, enter its VIN in GM’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup. If you are in Canada, consult Transport Canada’s notice 2025225 and follow the corrective action for your vehicle; Canadian campaign details should not be assumed to match U.S. identifiers or coverage in every respect.
What is the engine problem?
GM’s recall filing describes two manufacturing and quality concerns: sediment on connecting rods and crankshaft oil galleries can damage rod bearings, and some crankshafts may have dimensions or a surface finish outside specification. The resulting internal damage can cause an engine failure while the vehicle is being driven. GM says that such a failure can cause loss of propulsion and increase crash risk. What symptoms should drivers watch for?
GM lists these possible warnings of an engine problem:
- Knocking, banging, or other unusual engine noises
- Check-engine light illumination
- Hesitation or high engine RPM
- Abnormal shifting
- Reduced propulsion
- A no-start condition
These symptoms are not a way to determine recall eligibility, and their absence does not confirm that a vehicle is unaffected. Use the VIN lookup and contact a dealer about an open campaign. If the vehicle develops a serious engine warning, unusual noise, or reduced propulsion, stop driving when it is safe to do so and seek assistance rather than continuing to operate it.

What repair will the dealer perform?
The remedy depends on the VIN and the dealer’s inspection. GM’s instructions require dealers to confirm campaign involvement and open status in the vehicle-history system before beginning applicable work. The owner does not choose between the remedy branches. (GM dealer bulletin)

Use an authorized dealer to confirm the applicable work for your VIN. The listed oil and filter service is part of the campaign remedy, not a substitute DIY fix or a basis for assuming that a vehicle has been cleared.

What did GM report, and what is NHTSA investigating now?
In its 2025 recall filing, GM reported 28,102 U.S. field complaints or incidents potentially related to L87 crankshaft, connecting-rod, or engine-bearing failure, including 14,332 allegations of loss of propulsion. GM also reported 12 potentially related alleged crashes and 12 potentially related alleged injuries; it characterized the specifically alleged injuries as minor or non-physical, with most not crash-related. The company listed 42 potentially related fire allegations and said causation was unclear in most cases. These are company investigation figures about reports or allegations, not confirmed defect-caused failures. (GM’s NHTSA recall filing)
Separately, NHTSA opened Recall Query RQ26001 on January 16, 2026, to assess the effectiveness of recall 25V-274 after reports of engine failure following completion of the remedy. The opening resume recorded 36 owner questionnaires. This is an investigation into the existing recall’s effectiveness, not an announcement that every recalled engine will fail. A later secondary mirror of NHTSA investigation files reports that Engineering Analysis EA26005 opened August 20, 2026. It reports 499 NHTSA complaints of post-remedy engine failure—473 after the oil-viscosity remedy and 26 after engine replacement—and 191 failures involving engines produced after the original recall production period. The mirror also describes an expanded 2021–2026 investigation scope for several model lines. These are investigation figures reported by a secondary source, not a new recall or proof that all such vehicles have the defect. Check NHTSA’s live investigation records for agency updates.
