GM Hands-Free Trailering is a towing-specific capability of Super Cruise, not autonomous driving. On a properly equipped GM vehicle and an approved, compatible road, Super Cruise can provide hands-free steering and adaptive cruise control while you tow. The vehicle recognizes that a trailer is connected—or, in some cases, detects one without an electrical connection—and changes its control behavior, including increasing the following distance to allow for the trailer’s added stopping distance.
You still have to watch the road continuously, keep your eyes up, and be ready to steer or take over. Before using it, verify your exact model year, trim, trailering equipment, trailer dimensions and weight, road eligibility, service status, and the instructions in the matching Owner’s Manual.

What GM Hands-Free Trailering actually does
Hands-Free Trailering extends Super Cruise’s normal driver-assistance functions to certain towing situations. Super Cruise combines steering assistance on GM-mapped compatible roads with Adaptive Cruise Control. When the vehicle knows a trailer is being towed, the system uses different control behavior rather than treating the combination like a short, unladen vehicle.

GM engineer Matt Kempeinen describes one part of the vehicle’s mass-estimation logic this way: “When the vehicle starts pulling away, we have an algorithm that starts running F=MA equations.” That explanation indicates how drive force and acceleration can help estimate the load being moved. It should not be read as a complete description of every sensor, calibration, or control input used by a particular vehicle.
Hands-Free Trailering does not make the trailer self-steering, guarantee that every curve can be negotiated without assistance, or take responsibility for an emergency. The driver remains responsible for the vehicle, trailer, route, speed, braking, lane position, and safe takeover.
Which GM vehicles may support it?
GM’s June 29, 2026 feature list names the following vehicles as having Hands-Free Trailering capability, subject to model-year, trim, package, and equipment requirements:

A nameplate on this list does not prove that every year, trim, or vehicle in inventory qualifies. Super Cruise, the required trailering hardware, software version, and available packages can differ. Confirm the vehicle’s build sheet or window sticker and read its Owner’s Manual before planning a tow. A dealer or GM support representative can verify equipment when the documentation is unclear.
How the system recognizes a trailer
Electrical connection
Plugging the trailer’s electrical connector into the vehicle’s trailer socket can allow the vehicle to recognize that trailering is active. The exact connector, message sequence, and setup prompts vary by vehicle, so follow the procedure in the vehicle-specific manual rather than relying on a generic sequence.

Trailer detected without a plug
GM also says vehicle sensors may detect a trailer that has no electrical connection. Detection without a plug does not remove the need to configure the vehicle correctly or check the combination’s limits. If the instrument cluster or Super Cruise display reports that a trailer is outside supported limits, do not attempt to override the message.
What recognition changes
Once trailering is recognized, the system can apply towing-specific control behavior, including a longer following gap. Recognition is not an approval of the trailer’s weight or dimensions; those limits still come from the exact vehicle’s manual.

1. Confirm the exact vehicle equipment
Verify that the vehicle has Super Cruise and the trailering capability required for your configuration. Check the model year, trim, option packages, and any hardware listed in the equipment documentation. Do not infer eligibility from the vehicle’s nameplate alone.
2. Check the vehicle-specific trailer limits
Open the Trailer Towing section of the exact Owner’s Manual. GM’s Super Cruise towing supplement permits use only within that vehicle’s stated trailer size and weight limits. There is no single fleet-wide Super Cruise towing number that can safely be applied to every GM vehicle.
Check all relevant limits, not just the headline tow rating. Depending on the vehicle, the manual may distinguish trailer weight, tongue weight, length, width, height, axle loading, hitch requirements, and other operating conditions. A trailer can fall within an ordinary maximum tow rating yet still require a separate check against Super Cruise trailering limits.

3. Confirm the trailer and hitch setup
Inspect the hitch, safety chains, breakaway system, lighting, tires, load distribution, and electrical connection before enabling any driver assistance. Follow the manual’s procedure for confirming that the trailer is recognized. A camera system may be available on some vehicles with trailer-camera provisions, but a trailer camera is not a prerequisite for Super Cruise trailering and its fitment is model-specific.
4. Verify road and environmental conditions
Super Cruise works only on GM-mapped compatible roads and only when its operating conditions are met. Visible lane markings and usable GPS availability are among the requirements described by GM. Keep the forward-facing cameras and other relevant sensors clean; mud, snow, ice, heavy rain, glare, or blocked views can prevent engagement or cause a handoff.
5. Check service or trial status
GM says an active Super Cruise plan or trial is required. Plan terms can vary by vehicle and market and can change over time, so check the current status shown for your vehicle before departing. A vehicle with the necessary hardware may still be unable to use the feature if the required service is inactive.
6. Prepare the driver
Hands-free means your hands may be off the wheel only while the system is available and you remain attentive. Keep your eyes on the road, stay prepared to steer or brake, and make sure every driver understands that the system is assistance rather than autonomy.
What happens while towing on Super Cruise
Following distance is increased
The system automatically creates a longer gap to the vehicle ahead when trailering is active. That adjustment is intended to provide additional stopping room for the heavier, longer combination. You must still monitor traffic, weather, road grade, payload, and braking performance; the software’s gap adjustment does not replace normal defensive driving.

Lane changes are disabled
Automatic lane changes and turn-signal-initiated Super Cruise lane changes are unavailable when a trailer is detected. Plan lane changes yourself, check mirrors and blind spots, signal, and take the steering control required by the vehicle’s instructions. Do not expect the system to move the combination into another lane.
Sharp curves can require a handoff
GM’s manual supplement says Super Cruise will often return steering control to the driver on sharp curves while towing. Keep both the road and the takeover alerts in view, reduce speed when appropriate, and be ready to steer immediately. A green hands-free indication is not a promise that the next curve will remain within the system’s capability.
Manual trailer braking has a caveat
With an aftermarket trailer brake controller, Super Cruise may not disengage when the manual trailer brake is applied. That is a system caveat, not a recommendation to install an aftermarket controller. Understand how your particular brake controller interacts with the vehicle and follow the manual’s instructions.
A practical setup and departure procedure
- Read the matching documentation. Use the vehicle’s current Owner’s Manual and any trailering or Super Cruise supplement for the exact model year and configuration.
- Verify the combination. Confirm trailer weight, dimensions, tongue load, hitch equipment, and all other limits listed for that vehicle.
- Inspect the trailer. Check tires and pressures, lights, safety chains, breakaway equipment, cargo restraint, and brake operation.
- Connect and recognize the trailer. Attach the electrical connector when required and follow the instrument-cluster prompts. If the vehicle detects a trailer without a plug, verify that the displayed status matches your setup.
- Clean and check sensors. Remove dirt, ice, snow, or film from cameras and sensors used by the driver-assistance system.
- Choose an eligible road and suitable conditions. Wait until lane markings, GPS, traffic, weather, and visibility satisfy the system’s requirements.
- Engage only when the display permits it. Confirm that Super Cruise is available and that no trailer-limit or system fault message is present.
- Stay ready throughout the drive. Watch for takeover alerts, curves, construction, changing lanes, merging traffic, and any situation in which you should disengage and drive manually.
Common situations in which it will not behave as expected
The feature will not engage
- Check that the Super Cruise plan or trial is active.
- Confirm that the road is mapped and that lane markings and GPS reception are usable.
- Inspect and clean cameras and sensors.
- Verify that the trailer is recognized and that its size and weight are within the vehicle’s stated limits.
- Look for a warning, service message, or configuration prompt in the instrument cluster.
The system hands control back during a turn
This can be normal on a sharp curve while towing. Take control immediately, steer through the curve, and continue manually until the display indicates that assistance is available again. Do not repeatedly re-engage in a situation the vehicle is rejecting.
The vehicle does not change lanes
That is expected when a trailer is detected. Lane-change assistance is disabled during trailering, so make the maneuver yourself when it is safe.

The trailer is within the normal tow rating but the feature still refuses
Check the separate Super Cruise trailering limits in the manual. Ordinary maximum towing capacity is not necessarily the same as the approved combination for Hands-Free Trailering. Dimensions, equipment, or a model-specific restriction may be decisive.
How to compare two GM towing setups
If you are choosing between vehicles or configuring a replacement tow vehicle, compare them only on a matched, model-year-specific basis:

Before relying on the capability, find the entries that answer these vehicle-specific questions: Which model years and trims have the required hardware? What trailer weight, dimensions, and tongue-load limits apply? How is trailer recognition confirmed? What messages disable or restrict Super Cruise? Where are the cameras and sensors, and how should they be cleaned? How does the vehicle’s trailer-brake system interact with Super Cruise? Which roads and conditions permit engagement? The manual is the controlling source when a general feature description and your vehicle’s display differ.
